Cape Town - Former Springbok hooker Tiaan Liebenberg will coach the CUT Ixias in this year’s Varsity Cup competition.

Liebenberg, who played five Tests for the Boks in 2012, replaces the experienced Skillie Bester - who coached CUT to the Varsity Shield title in 2014 and maintained the Ixias' Cup status for the next two years.

UCT’s Ikeys have also had a changing of the guard, with former Springbok hooker Hanyani Shimange replaced by Christiaan Esterhuizen.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Varsity Cup and to celebrate the achievement, organisers have expanded the Cup competition to nine teams.

Wits come up from the Varsity Shield courtesy of finishing on top in that division last year.

2017 Varsity Cup teams and coaches:

Pukke: Jonathan Mokuena

UJ: Werner Janse van Rensburg
Shimlas: Hendro Scholtz
CUT Ixias: Tiaan Liebenberg
