What if the Maties lose?

The Maties (top of the log) and UCT (second on the log) will both - for the third year in a row - be hosting home semifinals this coming Monday; with the table-topping defending champions, should they beat Pukke, set to host a third successive final.

Of course, in 2008 the Maties did not end on top of the log, yet they still hosted the inaugural Varsity Cup Final because UCT's floodlights - at their Groote Schuur fields - are not deemed good enough by broadcasters, SuperSport, to host a late televised match. (As per Varsity Cup regulations.)

So, if the Maties were to lose to the Pukke in Stellenbosch on Monday, and UCT were to beat Shimlas in Cape Town, then the final on March 29 will be held in Potchefstroom - despite UCT having ended higher than the Men from Potch on the log.

Varsity Cup CEO Duitser Bosman explained to varsitycup.co.za: "Such a scenario would be unfortunate for UCT, but that is how the rulings of the Varsity Cup work.

"We had a similar situation in 2008 and, since then, ruling 10.2 was added to the official Varsity Cup competition rules and all eight universities have been aware of the situation since the start of last year's tournament."

Having once again been treated to an exciting finale to the league phase of the third-ever Varsity Cup tournament, which saw Shimlas and UJ involved in a virtual quarterfinal match, Bosman is anticipating "two fantastic semifinals" between the four top teams in 2010.

And, the Varsity Cup boss will be present in Cape Town for the UCT-Shimlas match (kick-off 4.15pm), before making the dash to Stellenbosch for the 6.30pm clash between Stellenbosch and NWU-Pukke.

All that could slow Bosman down on Monday would be a tied match between the Ikey Tigers and Shimlas - as was the case in 2008 when the Maties-Tukkies semifinal went into extra-time. (Interestingly, UCT and the Shimlas drew their opening match in Port Elizabeth this year - 30-30 - an omen, perhaps?)

If the scores are level at full-time - in either the semifinal or final - then twenty (20) minutes extra-time will be played - ten (10) minutes each way, with a one-minute (1) break.

Then, if the scores are still level after extra-time, a kick-out will be held.

A kick-out will take place as follows:
- Each team chooses five (5) players to place-kick in random order from the middle of the field on the 10-metre line, nearest to the goal-posts as the designated point on the field.  The teams will toss for kicking first.
- If the score is still equal after the kick-out, the kick-out will continue on a sudden-death basis.
- The same five (5) players will kick again in the same sequence that was used in the first round of the kick-out.

Bosman concluded: "Whatever it takes, be it 80 minutes or 100 minutes, I have no doubt that we will be treated to two high-quality semifinals. There is a lot at stake for all four teams, but I am looking forward to Monday and, of course, the following week's final.

Previous semifinal results:

2008:

UCT 32 Pukke 31
Maties 44 Tukkies 41 (extra-time)

2009:
UCT 17 Pukke 19
Maties 38 Tukkies 14

How did anyone ever even consider the fact that Maties could lose ? Maties = the breeding ground of SA Rugby

Jeeeez, how dumb people can be blaming the rules etc. If UCT's premises are the main cause for the mess, do not seek explanations from elsewhere, and point fingers at no one other th UCT.

I agree with most of the sentiments on this forum. It is extremely disppointing that Ikey Tigers management didn't Liaise with WP rugby for the use of Newlands. The varsity cup games are played on Mondays so there is enough time to "repair" and prepare the field for the next game. Newlands have all the infrastructure for broadcasting. SWAK!!! The rules in this case of the competition SUCKS!!! I feel the organisers of this competition lacked vision when they agreed on this ammendment to the rules. Leaves a very sour taste in the mouth of this Ikey supporter

The chances of Maties losing is slim in any case. They kick butt every time they go onto a field and this has been the norm for many years. But in the unlikely event - why not just move the game to Newlands? It is just down the road from UCT and the Stormers are going to be on the road by then. Newlands can make a buck out of gate fees and the broadcasters are happy. Its a no brainer.

Danny Jordaan said Rugby must come to the party. If UCT reach the final, lets play the final in the new soccer stadium. And ask the students to be difficult. It will be good practice for the staff.

While the real possibility of a 'kick out' is extremely unlikely, I think the rules around this have been based too much on football's penalty shoot outs, and should be tweaked for next season. Instead of five placekickers taking turns from one spot, rather have the two teams' designated place kickers take kicks from the 22 - starting in front of the posts, then moving to the left, half way between the centre and the touchline, then right of the psots at the same spot, then from the left and right touchlines -- this gives the best kicker in each team a chance to prove how good he is from all over the park, while not subjecting any non-kickers to the humiliation of failing with a kick. At least this way, there is a fair clash between the two kickers, and the one that can kick the best (likely the one who can goal from the touchline) will triumph. Much fairer, in my book...

As an Ikey alumnus, I am dissappointed at the lack of interest shown by the UCT administration in providing decent facilities for their team that has shown itself to be one of the top contenders in the varsity cup since its inception in 2006 (is it?). Tank in his FRG blog spoke about this recently and it is just a poor show from the top rated university in the country. Come on UCT admin, the Tigers make us proud every week, come to the party !
