Johannesburg - The University of Pretoria’s (Tuks) rugby team are expected to make a statement when they travel to Bloemfontein on Monday to take on the University of the Free State (Shimlas) in what is expected to be a thrilling FNB Varsity Cup contest.
Tuks may have stumbled in the second round when they lost to neighbours Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), but have since started playing the brand of rugby their highly respected coaching staff expects of them, and - if they continue to improve - they may very well start fancying their chances of reaching the play-offs.
Although official documents indicate that Nollis Marais is in charge of the team, Super 14 and Currie Cup winning coach Heyneke Meyer has been at his side every step of the way.
And when taking a closer look at the brand of rugby Tuks are playing - or trying to play - Meyer’s influence becomes more evident.
Shimlas, however, have shown that they are capable of beating the best in the business and will be desperate to keep their semifinal hopes alive with another solid performance at home.
Tuks currently occupy fourth place in the log standings and a win will open the door to securing a home semifinal.
Meanwhile in Johannesburg UJ students will be hoping that their rugby players show the same strength and character that was on display in last week’s come-from-behind 24-23 victory over Shimlas.
UJ take on NWU-Pukke in what should be another intense physical battle between old enemies.
The UJ squad will be hoping that disruptions in Pukke’s coaching camp give them the upper hand, yet they could also be on the receiving end of a team looking to restore pride lost in recent times.
Pukke coach Rudy Joubert is taking a two week sabbatical as management and the Leopards Rugby Union investigate the team’s unexpected slump this season.
Pukke used to have a psychological advantage over their fellow Pirates Grand Challenge competitors, but seem to be lacking confidence and composure this year.
In other matches the current log leaders - the University of Cape Town - host TUT and are expected to strengthen the hold they currently have on the top spot.
The Ikey Tigers should make it four from four, but would have taken note that the TUT team they are up against, is nothing like the one they faced last year.
Still in the Western Cape, Maties (Stellenbosh University) take on the Madibas (Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) at the Danie Craven stadium with the goal of securing a bonus-point victory.
