Pukke pip Ikeys, but lose out

Potchefstroom - The Pukke might have beaten the Ikeys 17-13 on Monday night, but it wasn’t good enough to secure a home semi against the same opposition at the same, time place, next Monday night.

The victory should give the Pukke some self-belief that they could beat the Ikey Tigers on home soil next weekend. But could they?

Fact is that the Pukke are not firing on all cylinders and this performance might have been good enough to secure a victory in Potch, but might not be enough to beat the Tigers in Cape Town.

The Pukke pummelled the Ikeys scrum and young BG Uys demolished his opponent. In the end the scrums were a farce as Shane Meier was in reverse gear in every scrum.

The Pukke had an ideal opening. Winger Andrew van Wyk should have scored in the opening minutes, but spilled the ball, but captain courageous Willem van Der Wall scored a brilliant try to give his side a 10-0 Lead.

But a quick lineout that went astray in the Ikeys half when they tried to play the ball back to the hooker and Ikeys winger Marcello Sampson sprinted the length of the field to equal the scores.

The teams went into the break with the scored tied at 10-10.

After the break the Puk scored a forwards try when young BG Uys scored his second try for his Varsity to take the lead up to 17-10, but that was that. Mistake after mistake, particular by new flyhalf Devan Eckard, who made basic errors that nearly cost his side a victory, ended Pukke’s dream of scoring four tries.

Captain Van der Wall played his heart out (he does every game) and the flank-duo of Savvas Nel and Jaco Lotter worked well in tandem, but the backs were in disarray.

It didn’t help that both fullback Willem Barnard and centre Wouter Watermeyer left the field at half-time. And with that their home semi dream.

Scorers: Pukke: Tries: Willem van der Wal, BG Uys. Conversions: Cecil Dumont (2). Penalty: Dumont.

Ikeys: try: Marcello Sampson. Conversion: Matthew Rosslee. Penalties: Rosslee (2).
