Cape Town - Defending Varsity Cup champions, UCT, picked up their first points of the 2012 season - thanks to a whopping 66-2 demolition of wooden spoonists, the TUT Vikings, in Pretoria on Monday.
Having suffered successive defeats at the hands of Shimlas and UJ in Round One and Two, respectively, the Ikeys - who were without any losing bonus points - would have been a bit nervous heading into this encounter against a desperate TUT outfit.
The Vikings, the only winless side in the tournament now, would have fancied their chances of a first-ever win over UCT but they were quite simply blown away by the visitors who scored nine tries - four of them going to young No 8 Rayn Smid who was making his first Varsity Cup start.
Smid came off the bench in last week's 15-29 loss to UJ, but he found the going a bit easier this week as his team-mates cut down their errors and got on the front foot for the first time this season.
UCT's big win was the only away victory of the week, as other results saw UJ beat the giant-killing Madibaz by 48-18 in the day's first game, UP-Tuks beat the NWU-Pukke by 40-20 in a physical clash in Pretoria and Maties remained unbeaten with a deserved 20-7 win over Shimlas at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.
As things stand now, Maties and Tuks are the only unbeaten teams in the 2012 Varsity Cup and, as luck may have it, they will go head-to-head in Stellenbosch next Monday.
Tuks claimed a four-try bonus point in their win over the NWU-Pukke, having converted their 24-10 half-time lead into their third successive win of the season.
Flyhalf Wesley Dunlop kicked five from five conversions and fullback Clayton Blommetjies - the official Man of the Match - scored an acrobatic try in the second half to extend his team's lead at a crucial stage.
Maties scored just three tries in their win over the Shimlas, but it was a match won at the breakdown - as flankers Helmut Lehmann and Sam Mabombo gave their side the advantage on the ground.
* Meanwhile, UWC raced to the top of the Varsity Shield standings with an impressive 37-23 victory over reigning champions, CUT, in Bellville.
In other Shield action, UKZN continued their winless start to the season when they went down to a determined Wits outfit who scored eight unanswered points in the second half to clinch a tense 18-10 victory in wet conditions in Pietermaritzburg.
* In the Young Guns competition, the UJ Under-20 team sent out a warning to their rivals by bulldozing NMMU's Under-20s by 47-16 and UCT's U20s produced a massive second-half performance against their TUT opponents, winning 45-2.
* Finally, in Steinhoff Koshuisrugby Championships action, Vishuis (Shimlas) beat Dagbreek (Maties) by 15-14 in Stellenbosch and Bastion (UJ) smashed Oppidani (NMMU) by 37-18.
