USA give Todd Clever the boot

Cape Town - The United States of America have released veteran loose forward Todd Clever from their Pacific Nations Cup squad after the player broke team protocol.

A statement on USA Rugby’s official website reads: “Effective immediately, Todd Clever has been released from the Eagles’ Pacific Nations Cup squad due to multiple squad conduct violations.”

Head coach Mike Tolkin commented: “Such behaviour is contrary to the team culture that players and management have been fostering within the Eagles over time. Clearly, this is not a pleasant or desirable circumstance for either party.”

Thirty-two-year-old Clever, who previously also represented the Lions in South Africa, has played 63 Tests for USA since making his debut in 2003.

The USA are paired with the Springboks in Pool B at the Rugby World Cup later this year and will face the Boks  on October 7 at London’s Olympic Stadium.
