Yellow-carded Boks to pay up

2010-07-22 17:28

Adnaan Mohamed

Brisbane – Springbok vice captain, Victor Matfield, says any South African player who is yellow carded in Saturday’s Tri-Nations encounter against Australia will have to pay part of his match fees to the rest of the team.

In both defeats against the All Blacks, the Springboks gave away yellow cards early in the games, which swung the momentum in the favour of the Kiwis.

“You can play hard rugby, but it needs to be within the laws,” Matfield said at the team hotel on Thursday.

“We cannot afford to give away yellow cards. I think our discipline has been good. In our first game we only gave way about five or six penalties and nine in the second.

“But we have also done stupid things that are completely out of our character. It is extremely difficult to stop New Zealand when they get momentum early in a game,” he said.

“You can only beat the Kiwis by putting them under pressure from the first minute. In both games the two yellow cards gave the All Blacks a lot of impetus early in the game. That made it tough for us.”

Matfield said the Boks worked very hard on improving their technique at the breakdowns and sharpening up on their defence during the week.

“It’s all about getting the small things right, getting field position and putting pressure on the opposition. This is something that we are not doing at the moment,” he explained.

The Bulls lock also believes not having an out and out fetcher like Australia’s David Pocock will not negatively affect the Boks’ performance at the breakdowns.

“Schalk (Burger) has been our open side flanker for the past six years. He knows exactly what he needs to go out and do. He has always been good in that position in the past and we are happy having him fulfilling that role again,” he said.

Matfield says that mathematically there is still a chance to win the Tri-Nations even if the Boks lose against the Wallabies on Saturday. But they regard a win as non negotiable.

“We need to not look past this weekend. This is the weekend that we need to put in everything to get our confidence and the belief in ourselves back to show everyone that we can play this game,” he added.

  • Paul Keys - 2010-07-22 17:36

Why pay it to the rest of the team? I reckon it should be paid to a charity chosen by the player, it's not as if the players dont get paid enough

  • Anton - 2010-07-22 17:54

Why is Victor saying this and not john smit?

  • TerryG - 2010-07-22 17:59

Schalk will not get to the breakdown fast enough and once again we will be starved of good quality ball. How difficult is this to understand? First we shoot ourselves in the foot with a slow scrumhalf and now with no fetcher? doesnt make sense.

  • Guy - 2010-07-22 18:05

The loses have been good for us. It refocuses a team and forces everyone to take a good hard look at what is missing. We will win the World Cup next year.Lets go into the World Cup as the underdogs.

  • Jannas - 2010-07-22 18:14

A yellow carded player should forfeit all of his match fees. If there is a penalty, resulting in the opposition scoring, against a player, he should be fined with a quarter of his match fees. The same should be the rule for missed tackles. These players are paid extremely well and should compensate for poor performance and ill discipline. The money gained through this should be held in trust to reward players for good performance and scoring.

  • @anton - 2010-07-22 18:22

Is eintlik so eenvoudig

  • Michael - 2010-07-22 18:33

Sjoe Bakkies sal bankrot gewees het.

  • Greg - 2010-07-22 18:45

Hope this makes an impact. Victor for captain. Always liked the guy. True class. We have to win on Sat. this is getting desperate now

  • Gert@Anton - 2010-07-22 18:59

Anton, goeie vraag ou maat. Victor se bek is lekker los want hy sal nie sommer n geelkaart kry nie want hy speel nie saam nie, staan rond alhowel ek hom krediet moet gee in die eerste toets het hy 18 duikslae uitgevoer x 4 meer as gemiddelde per wedstryd. Nogtand 8 minder as Schalk.

  • Whistleblower - 2010-07-22 19:02

When did playing for your country become a game of Monopoly? If a yellow-carded player is paying anyone it should be the fans. How can someone “make money” from a bad error when playing for your country??? You are playing for country; shouldn’t a card bring enough shame on you anyway? These players are taking what they have for granted! “Hey Victor, how much for landing on your 5 jersey with one Hotel and 2 Houses?”

  • Marius - 2010-07-22 19:03

  • Sampie - 2010-07-22 19:05

The Boks and South Africa needs a new captain.Schalk Burger or Victor. I do not care. We have a vacuum as John has lost all credibility, not only with the press but with his own players.

  • Richard - 2010-07-22 19:30

Perhaps the proposed fine should, in this case, be paid to the Australian Rugby Union. That will put off the offenders.

  • Funny that - 2010-07-22 19:41

In other words, 'stop cheating' cameras are everywhere, "we cant headbutt....." we had 3 months of an era untill we were thrashed by English PROVINCIAL TEAMS (EOYT), Lets just face reality Boets, we only had 3 months" Faster, fitter, stronger and more physical. HAHAHA , look up stats (3 MONTHS) BANG,BANG BOSH, actually Saffas are p*****s especially regarding hard physical rugby, muscle for muscle your WEAK,

  • Andre - 2010-07-22 19:59

Fine Schalk, Bryan and Smit half their match fees for not playing at all! After that, sue Snorre for sellecting them!

  • todd - 2010-07-22 20:34

Fans want to see their team to beat the opponent by score. 1 beautiful try that fans can cheer would worth 100 punches or stumps or whatever the dirty little things you do in the ruck.

  • gareth - 2010-07-22 20:36

Anton agree 100% why is john smit not saying this.... not much protesting was done by john, with last weeks richie incidents????? Victor or Schulk for captain...

  • King WP - 2010-07-22 21:07

Andre were you watching world cup, Schalk was the one person who was there

  • marco - 2010-07-22 21:08

If anyone needs to be fined then it's that Allan Rolland for what he done last weekend that ****ing Irish ***********

  • erewhon - 2010-07-22 21:10

If we get another standard Welsh refereering display, we can take his fee too!!

  • Vic J - 2010-07-22 22:10

Boks have a major problem now that our coach has said cheating is the only way. They are sitting ducks. Sorry to say Victor, there aint going to many pay checks handed out. PdV has such a groot bek. Please think before you talk. Previous coach came under so much pressure/fire but never blamed anybody. PdV, have the balls and take the rap. Show us you are a good coach and not just put in the coaching position to keep the ANC happy.

  • Suurpoeps - 2010-07-22 22:40

  • @Andre - 2010-07-22 23:04

It must be a real "funny" feeling to be as stupid as you are. I suppose it runs in the family? Hou by die Blou ou you fits in perfectly!

  • Safire - 2010-07-23 03:13

The "Spear" tacle episode was blown out of proportion..seen much worse happen with only a warning or yellow card, It lost us the game for sure. Botha lost us thye first game for sure he is a liability, has no brain and should not play for the Boks again bekker can think and fill his boots anyday. Spies again appears brain dead, he goes down as easlily as the soccer players and is too scared to get dirty and only makes ground when he mannages to catch a ball... why cant he use that huge frame of his to better effect!!? A number of players have let the team down and PDIV should address that. Also do not let these guys loose in the media they are rugby players not oricles. Finally those of you whom now want PDIV ousted have you forgotten how you praised him when things went well. I think its time the players own up as they rock up for the game having left their braines on the Team-bus. Its way too easy to blame the ref or coach there are more staff in the coaching team why cant they stand up and be counted!?

  • Grant - 2010-07-23 05:03

Matfield got a yellow card in that memorable 0-49 defeat at Suncorp Stadium,Brisbane.

  • @ Andre - 2010-07-23 06:16

  • Burgiesburnin - 2010-07-23 07:06

There we have it. Words of wisdom, its all worked out. It took three weeks but now these people get it. Play within the rules and you dont get a yellow card.

  • Wonder - 2010-07-23 07:28

  • @Andre - 2010-07-23 07:30

    You are an idiot.

  • Duncan - 2010-07-23 07:41

TerryG, new rules dont allow for a fetcher, is that a word you heard in pub talk and it sticks? thats why Brusouw isnt in team.Schalk is in every loss maul/Ruck whta more can we epect from him....upose you anti Kallis person too?

  • POLLY - 2010-07-23 07:49

As is the case with 20/20 cricket the administrators and the "fat cats "sponsors are busy killing the game . The players are playing badly because they are over played and tired. They will never complain because they want the money. The spectators are the ones that are getting the rough end of the pineapple as we are paying good money to see our team badly managed and then watch poor performances on the field and see them play a third of the game with 14 players. When last has a ref been sanctioned for poor performance.Until the rugby supporters stand up and make their voice heard they will continue to feed us crap. We should have a supporters forum that is represented in the team and that represents all supporters on talk shows etc. After all we are the fools financing the game but we have the least say.

  • Davej - 2010-07-23 07:58

Forfeiture of match fees for repeated infringements resulting in yellow cards should have been introduced years ago, that would have stopped the brain-dead players from taking the law into their own hands. And as for Victor making the statement...Smit has lost the plot,in fact his plot went missing about two years ago.Time for a BEEEEG change and it needs to be made now!!

  • George - 2010-07-23 08:04

Victor was saying this because John Smit is still on his way to the press conference. SAB will sponsor him with a golf cart to be in time for line outs and scrums. John be a gentleman and leave the game while you still get an applause (lately not that loud anymore). Let the youngsters be ready for RWC2011 please John. I am begging.

  • joe 5 - 2010-07-23 08:05

The bomb regarding the captaincy will burst before the year is out. It is well known that Victor wants the captaincy and a lot of the members of the team will prefer him to be captain. During the first test I picked up on two occasions where Morne Steyn turned to Matfield to make the decision. Go watch the last penalty that he converted - John shows him to kick to the sideline, he looks at Victor who tells him to kick at goal and he decides to do it. The camp is divided - throw into that mix two very good candidates for captain, Juan Smith and Schalk Burger. Many people will not agree with especially Schalk as captain but he didn't get one yellow in the S14. Juan on the other hand will be an awesome Bok captain with players and supporters generally having huge respect for him. Just some thoughts....

  • Arnie - 2010-07-23 08:25

All the Victor for captain supporters please wake up and realise that Fourie du Preez is the real captain of the Bulls and the Boks if Smit is gone. Juan Smith also makes a huge difference when on the park in this area. Matfield can talk but Fourie leads and inspires! I agree for any missed tackles or penalty, deduct match fees, repeated yellow card offenders like Bakkies and Schalk (he's been better of late, but I think it's because he is off the pace) DROP THEM for the next game, we have enough backup in those positions...

  • Supporter always - 2010-07-23 08:33

All those negative comments and couch coaches. Maybe you should have trained harder and gone out there and done it for us. It is a tough game and on all occasions the best team has won on the day. Leave all the nonsense and banter to the ignorant. Watch the game, support our boys, whom ever is selected, and enjoy the wonderful game of rugby. It's beautiful.

  • Weepee - 2010-07-23 09:10

Schalk cannot get to breakdowns because he is making 90% of the cover tackles. He keeps on having to go back and tackle the player that has broken the 1st line defense. At that point the ball goes wide and it becomes impossible to get the next point of breakdown. In the Stormers set-up he was brilliant simply because he had an 8th man that made all his tackles as opposed to the highly overated Spies. Add to that Flo was in good shape as opposed to being close to knackered as he is now. This shyte would not be happening if Juan Smith was there because Juan would be doing the grunt work as opposed to Schalk doing the grunt work as well trying to play fetcher. Get off Schalks back and look to where the real problem lies and that is SPIES!

  • @ @ Andre - 2010-07-23 10:22
