Pretoria - Springbok lock Victor Matfield says the celebration of his 100th Test cap is secondary to a much needed victory against Australia in Pretoria on Saturday.
"It's great to play my 100th Test at Loftus Versfeld, but it’s more important that we get a win."
Matfield was addressing a press conference on the eve of the Tri-Nations encounter at Loftus Versfeld.
"The Tri-Nations is over for us but we still have the Mandela Cup to play for," Matfield said.
"When we got together on Monday we resolved to put the past disappointments behind us and focus on doing well in these two Tests against Australia.
"Knowing the Tri-Nations is over takes the pressure off us a bit and hopefully we will be able to go out there and play the rugby we know we can. There are guys in this team who have come a long way together and they will be determined to do well."
Matfield added that he felt in good physical shape and was looking forward to the game: "I love playing rugby, I feel great and would love to play 10 more games this season."
Speaking about the occasion of his 100th cap, Matfield said he expected it to be "very special".
"There will be a lot of my friends and family there and I know that the Loftus faithful will be right behind me."
Asked which players he would have liked to have celebrated with, he replied: "Bakkies Botha and Fourie du Preez are the two guys I would loved to have share this milestone out there with me. We have had some great moments together and they are very special people. Unfortunately in life things don't always work out the way you want."
Matfield added that he felt relaxed ahead of the match and was confident the Boks could get a win.
"What Australia will get is a desperate Springbok team that wants a win. We want to go out there and express ourselves, playing the type of rugby we enjoy," Matfield said.
Meanwhile, Matfield's mentor at the Bulls, Heyneke Meyer, presented the Springboks with their match jerseys ahead of Saturday's game.
Meyer said he was grateful for the opportunity. "You probably hear that often but I am genuinely grateful, especially at Loftus," he said.
Meyer spoke about the importance of getting up from being down, saying it was important for the Springboks to stand up in front of their home fans.
"You have to stand up. It is very important for you as a team and as players. It is important to your World Cup ambitions that you stand up tomorrow."
"Every guy that sits here remains a champion, you don't become bad overnight. You must know you can win – there must be no doubts in your minds.
"You have to handle the pressure, go out there and shine. Put your bodies on the line for your teammates," he said.
Meyer paid tribute to Matfield and wished him well for his 100th Test. "I have coached some great players but Victor is the greatest of the great. No matter which team he plays for, he gives 100 percent. I will probably shed a tear when you run out there tomorrow."
