Steyn place not guaranteed

2010-08-23 16:12

Pretoria - There is no guarantee of a place for fullback Francois Steyn in Saturday's Tri-Nations Test against Australia despite pressure to bring him back into the team after a disastrous run for the Springboks.

Coach Peter de Villiers said on Monday it was premature to say if Steyn would play, after he returned from his club in France to join a Springbok training session following South Africa's dismal loss of the Tri-Nations crown to New Zealand.

The once-mighty Springboks lost all three matches in New Zealand and Australia before going down again to the All Blacks in Soweto on Saturday to concede their title.

Steyn, who plays for Racing Metro in France, was one of the heroes of last year's successful campaign, but has played just once this year, in the season's opening test against Wales.

The 23-year-old was embroiled in a club-versus-country row last week when he was not released to join the South Africans ahead of their 29-22 loss to the All Blacks on Saturday. Despite his club claiming he was injured, Steyn played for Racing Metro on Friday night before flying out to join the Springboks for their training session in Pretoria on Monday.

"The guy in his position [Gio Aplon] did not do badly on Saturday and if we just change for change's sake, then it can be detrimental to the team. But if I am sentimental in anything I do, then I won't make the best decisions for the team," de Villiers said.

"I have to look at the make-up of the team and their mental capacity," he added at a news conference.

Last week the coach questioned Steyn's commitment to the Springboks.

He insisted that the basics were in place for the team to return to winning ways, despite their horror run, which was made worse by conceding two tries in the last two minutes to lose to the All Blacks on Saturday after being 22-17 up.

The BIG problem lies with the staff on the bench - the Bokke was holding their own until the replacement went onto the pitch and stuff everything up. So pleeeeezzzzz ban Ricky & Flou from the Bok camp.

  • LEON NELL - 2010-08-23 16:27

I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THAT ANY PLATER THAT PLAYS FOR A CLUB DESPITE IF IT IS ON FOREN SOIL ,SHOULD BE ALLOUWED TO PLAY FOR THE SPRINGBOKS ,IF THEY ARE IN FORM AND FIT ,THEY SHOULD BE THERE REPRESENTING US ,AT THE MOMENT WE DO NOT LOOK LIKE THE SPRINGBOKS WHOM BECAME THE WORLD CHAMPIONS .(FRANS STEYN ,BRADLEY BARRIT ,SCALK BRITS AND MORE .IF WE LOSE ,WE LOSE IF ITS BY ONE POINT OR HUNDRED .EXPERIMENT MORE ,DIF COMBINATIONS ,ALREADY WERE SITTING WITH 4 LOSSES BUT NOTHING TO BUILD ON .

  • Bee-Bull - 2010-08-23 16:33

Yeeeeessssss Divvy, we all agree that none of your decisions are sentimental. One of biggest mistakes has to be his assumption that Bok supporters are as obtuse as he is.

  • IZ IT - 2010-08-23 16:44

APLON IS A WINGER AND STEYN IS A FB...TEST RUGBY IS NOT FOR SEVENS PLAYERS THAT WEIGH 70KG...THERE SHOULD BE A MINIMUM WEIGHT TO TEST RUGBY....YOU DONT SEE 5 FOOT BASKETBALL PLAYERS.COME PDV APLON,KANKOWSKI ARE IMPACT PLAYERS...THIS IS TEST RUGBY NOT THE CURRIE CUP!

  • fuzzy - 2010-08-23 16:45

News Flash Peter; everything you do smacks on sentimental or some other such ill-begotten mindset. Get a life! Do you not know when you are not wanted? anyone else would have bowed to the pressure of not being wanted and resigned a long time ago. Must surely be the lure of easy money that keep you there.

  • Punter - 2010-08-23 16:53

@Hein - Ricky or Flou did nothing wrong Steyn didn't kick a penalty into touch and the captain missed a tackle lets not blame the subs we lost the ball in contact 1min to go because the mighty spies/matfiled was NA the whole game...

  • Springbok Supporter - 2010-08-23 16:57

Play the best whether the guy is playing overseas or not. De Villiers doesnt have a clue but hopefully somebody with sense will ensure that Steyn starts. Especially if they again choose to play Habana on left wing we would need Steyn to basically cover that HUGE GAP!!!!! Its frustrating that COACH cant seem to grasp that some of his players are not worthy of the Bok jersey anymore!!! Lets keep on hoping and supporting the Bokke no matter what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Waar's Earl?

  • Henry - 2010-08-23 17:09

Pieter Div...all I can say is I'm glad you dont run my business. You have the square root of zero idea about selection and even less about coaching.Enjoy this job!! It's the last one you'll have at the top level..anywhere in the world.Mind you maybe Romania??

  • Cornel - 2010-08-23 17:16

Magtig man los vir Gio Aplon in die span.

  • mike - 2010-08-23 17:44

I'm sorry but Zane did better in the games he played then Gio did on saturday. I mean Gio managed to miss 2 tackles in the space of 30 sec in the one move the AB's did. Also he did nothing on the couter attack or on our attacking ball. Please double standard maybe?

  • @IZ IT - 2010-08-23 18:00

I suggest you google Nate Robinson, an NBA player who is in fact 1cm shorter than Aplon. Nor is he the smallest NBA player in history, or even the current shortest playing - I suggest you learn your facts before making stupid comments

  • Kevin - 2010-08-23 18:01

Aplon, Habana and JP Peterson - probably the fastest and one of the most talented back 3 in history. Then consider Jean de Villiers, Jaque Fourie and the amazing Juan de Jong. Add Frans Steyn into the mix and we have a scary set of possibilities - but now here lies the REAL PROBLEM - they cannot score without the ball. So the real question is the other Steyn who cannot seem to get the most talented back line moving … I don't pretend to be a rugby genius but the key to the door is not working. We need to change the key - nothing changes if you change nothing. Look what positive things happened with Hougaard coming in for Januarie. I like Ricky and am really embarrassed by the crowd booing him - he does not deserve that he does not select himself but he is not up there at the moment for sure.

  • Kevin - 2010-08-23 18:05

Here's a weakest link game - name the weakest link - Aplon,de Jong, de Villiers, Fourie, Habana, Peterson, Morne Steyn, Frans Steyn (in alpha order to prevent bias) - Can you name a better back line? So who kicks all the ball away?

  • @henry - 2010-08-23 18:17

good point, not even zimbabwe would hire pdv after this fiasco.im in the process of immigrating to nz for all the obvious reasons to leave sa,but all this aa and constant talk of it just makes it so much easier.it is reverse apartheid and it will never end as long as 20 million blacks stay in townships which will never change.i love the boks but have lost faith in this country.reverse apartheid is a very ugly thing...good luck boks and all the boys staying in sa!

  • Gary Hirson - 2010-08-23 18:48

Ever since the loss of Fourie Du Preez, Morne Steyn has been left wanting. Throughout the Super 14 he had him feeding him and now with a key decision maker lost through injury, Morne Steyn has not been able to make the step up to the level where creative thinkers are needed. With the runners we have you have to mix and match the play. He kicks amazingly for posts, but that's about it

  • Stats - 2010-08-23 19:14

The weakest link game is simple if you look at stats. The weakest links must be Habana, De Jong, and Aplon. The Bulls scored 47 tries in this years S14, while the Stormers scored only 36. So if the Boks back line is not scoring tries, look at the facts. Last year the Boks scored many tries and won the Tri Nations, with only one Stormer in the back line ( Jean de Villiers ).

  • Confused - 2010-08-23 20:51

I hope he is referring to morne steyn!

  • Sonder Snor - 2010-08-23 21:55

Fact:The most valuable and versatile South African backline player and world cup winner at 22 does not have a Sprinbok contract. Then PdeV questions his commitment to the Sprinboks. I smell a rat.

  • Marius - 2010-08-23 21:59

Agree with Stats. The only difference between last year and this year is the 1 WP player last year, vs the 8 WP players this year, so what do you expect if half the Bok team comes from a team that hasn't won a trophy in 11 years. That explais the problem as clear as daylight.

  • croix - 2010-08-23 22:13

Steyn (or both?) might not be assured of his place in the team, but neither is ole Snorre? He simply has NO plan to get the guys back on the winning trail..... We are playing very steriotype and thus predictable rugby at the moment - get someone to bring some new flair! Baaai-baaai Snorre! Better NOW than shortly before RWC?

  • Martin - 2010-08-23 22:32

Div, if you just brought back Steyn all the way from France and don't play him, I hope Steyn tells you to F....K off and never come back! Becuase who would want to be messed about like that by an idiot who should not even be coaching rugby at ANY level!

  • Tjatja-rag - 2010-08-23 23:19

Then what's the use of flying him over?...Aag! nee man

  • Jan - 2010-08-24 02:24

Ja Muppet/snor you are so arrogant aren't you??? It's all about you and nothing about the supporters... you idiot.. you have the best players in the world but still choose to keep your parasites/under standard quota players. Oh how I hope that the aussies will beat you well and convincing, in both test matches. You deserve what you're getting and spectators please stop going to support muppet and his fellow muppets (coaching team). GO THE AUSSIES !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mike - 2010-08-24 03:22

It would b hard 2 imgine a bok team consisting of 1.beast 2.bismark 3.jannie 4.rossow 5.matfield 6.deysel 7.burger 8.spies 9.hougaard 10.morne 11.habana 12.de villiers 13.fourie 14.pietersen 15.steyn, losing a game against any team in the world.and pdv had the chance 2 select this team at the beginning of the campaign except 4 maybe jp and deysel..u can spot where the boks are gonna go wrong at every team announcement.a front row of steenkamp and smit is simply not mobile enough.as talented as juan de jongh is,u cant really imagine him on the same level as nonu and smith.at the back, aplon is such a big liability.yes he has pace but would u rather have a bloke that weighs 70kg or 100kg as ur last line of defence..as for the bench,it just does not make sense.chilliboy barely makes the bulls team.flip van der merwe has barely played any super14 and currie cup.why pick francois louw, when u have the sharks loose forwards performing every wkend.januarie never got picked 4 the stormers bt yet he is gd enuf 4 boks.wynard has never performed at test level...just a few months ago sa rugby was in a gr8 position, with the super 14 ect.we have got the best players in the world,sum1 just needs 2 put them together..test rugby is all about who makes the least mistakes..

  • Sharks23 - 2010-08-24 04:52

There is so much contradiction around, PDV is the problem the only main problem. Get rid of him and everything else will start to fall into place

  • lukas - 2010-08-24 07:12

  • Etienne - 2010-08-24 07:57

It is amazing that nobody has any tactics. No peeling around the front or back of lineouts, no scissor-moves no setups. Hell in 1973 at high school we had 24 set moves for different positions on field to create gaps and tries. Our set moves are to up and under/ lineout tractor trailer shove(where every body in front of the ball is actually playing obstruction)and ?????

  • assegaai - 2010-08-24 08:34

Morne Steyn is becoming the cancer in the team + We need a tight five that plays towards the ball (i.e. protect it and not hang around at inside and outside centers). The whole world the laughing at us! If PDiddy don't pick FSteyn then it's proof that he has some personal agenda (similar to racisim). Remove Morne Steyn and we will win the test Done!

  • @marius - 2010-08-24 08:35

Ha Ha Ha Wow & u really believe that as well Ha Ha Ha! Seriously some people are really stupid (& u probably even have an education lol)! No wonder the world looks the way it does!
