Despite consistent criticism throughout this year’s Vodacom Tri-Nations campaign, and a mediocre showing in his 100th Test match, where his fitness and form were consistently questioned, Smit still believes he can soldier on until the World Cup.

The captain was visibly irritated last week by questions about him retiring and a rumour that went around that he would call it a day after the 100th cap. After missing the tackle that cost the Boks the game against the All Blacks at FNB Stadium, he has returned this week more determined than ever to make up for his mistake.

“I have been asked that questions many times as you can imagine! I feel good and if I am injury fee I am confident that I can play at the World Cup next year,” Smith answered in the E-zine, stating unequivocably his desire to play another year of international rugby.

Smit is already the most capped international captain of all time, and believes there is no question about motivation to play in the Green and Gold.

“Being able to play Test rugby should be enough motivation for any player. As players we never own the jersey, we are only the custodians of the jersey. Each and every Test match I play is an honour and a privilege,” Smit explained.

“I always say to younger players that they must play every Test match as if it was their last. There are tough times and it is never easy when you lose but you have to believe in yourself, your team-mates and your coaches.

“We must also realise that there will always be criticism, because so many people have different opinions. We respect these but I have learnt to never take things too much to heart. I am fortunate that I have a very supportive family, especially my wife without whom I may not have achieved what I have.”

Asked about a possible conditioning course he would undergo after the Tri-Nations and a well-earned rest, Smit said a final decision had not yet been taken.

“That still has to be decided. Once the Tri-Nations is over the management and conditioning team will review where we are and what is needed for the end of year tour. Only then will there be clarity on which players might get a break.”

Despite the Boks problems with refereeing decisions this year, Smit believes it is important to have a good relationship with referees, or your team will suffer the consequences.

“The more you captain the easier it becomes to understand each referees personality and how he will manage the game. This is not an exact science though and as players have “off” days so do refs,” Smit said.

“Like us they are human and they have a very tough job. They must make split second decisions but it remains important that there is consistency in the application of the laws and hence the need to have a good rapport with the ref.”

The Bok captain may want to soldier on for another year, but unless his team can reverse their four-game losing streak against Australia at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, he might find the decision taken for him before the showpiece tournament starts in New Zealand.
