Ollie: Smit was dreadful

Jóhann Thormählen

Bloemfontein - Perhaps one had never expected too much from the Springboks' "B-team", but Peter de Villiers once again demonstrated that he cannot get a new side to gel.

That was the view of former Springbok prop Ollie le Roux in the wake of the Boks' 20-39 defeat to Australia in Sydney.

According to Le Roux, there were a few lessons in the defeat: The Bok coach cannot get a team to gel; Bok captain John Smit should not go to the World Cup; and Bok flyhalf Morné Steyn does not offer enough attacking potency.

While Le Roux reckons that individuals such as flank Danie Rossouw, fullback Gio Aplon, lock Flip van der Merwe and substitute prop CJ van der Linde performed well, the Boks lacked cohesion.

"Peter de Villiers again showed that he is not the kind of coach that can get a team to gel. Hopefully things go better when the guys at home return to the team," he said.

Le Roux was particularly disappointed with Smit.

"John Smit was dreadful. I can't think how one could even contemplate taking him to the World Cup."

The Boks did not make much attacking headway with Steyn and Le Roux believes replacement Patrick Lambie made a big difference and performed better than the Bulls star.

As for the looming match against the All Blacks, Le Roux said: "The All Blacks are going to be good. The Boks will get a huge hiding if they perform badly."

Former Bok flyhalf Hennie le Roux said that Steyn and scrumhalf Ruan Pienaar do not attack the advantage line enough.

"Steyn did not send the backline away fast enough and was too deep on attack. We have three or so guys who could play flyhalf, but the question is whether they are really being coached," said Hennie.

He believes that Wallaby flyhalf Quade Cooper and the entire Aussie backline toyed with the Boks.

The former Bok flyhalf believes that South Africa will have to protect the ball a lot better in contact against the All Blacks if they want to avoid a hiding.

Former Bok scrumhalf Barry Wolmarans also believes the Boks should guard possession more carefully.

"Turnover possession was a big problem. I was also not impressed with the Boks' passion. They appeared to be flat-footed."
