No Steyn scan results - Boks

Johannesburg - The Springboks have still not received a single medical report on Racing Metro fullback Frans Steyn, after more than a week of requests.

Team doctor Craig Roberts confirmed on Monday that the team was still waiting on the reports, which were requested more than a week earlier.

Steyn has been withdrawn from this weekend’s Vodacom Tri-Nations match against the All Blacks at FNB Stadium but the Boks are still waiting for word on how serious his injury is and when he will join up with them.

Steyn said this weekend in Rapport that he wanted to join, but had not received the necessary clearance from his club.

Roberts, who has only one injury worry this week in lock Danie Rossouw, was speaking in his capacity as team doctor, and admitted to being frustrated at the delay, which now seems intentional.

“It has been very frustrating. (National Teams manager) Andy Marinos has been in contact with them and to date I have not received any report. I’ve been waiting for a medical report and waiting for the scans but i have not been able to get hold of any of those at this stage,” Roberts said. “I’ve seen nothing, so it is difficult for me to comment on the injury.”

He did say that Rossouw would have to come through training on Tuesday if he was to be considered for the match.

“We had quite a hard week last week, and did a lot of hard work there, picking up one injury in Danie Rossouw. He has a hip flex strain and started doing some straight line running. “He will be doing some running with the team tomorrow and if he gets through that he will obviously be available for selection.”

Roberts also gave some insight to the injuries to Blue Bulls players Dewald Potgieter and Zane Kirchner, both who were released for Currie Cup duty, but who picked up injuries in the 15-12 loss to Western Province in Cape Town on Saturday.

“We did unfortunately have two injuries to players released to play Currie Cup rugby. One was to Dewald Potgieter, who picked up a whiplash injury in Cape Town.

He managed to carry on playing but eventually got a bad spasm in his neck and ended up coming off. We will do some investigations into it this afternoon but he should join the squad tomorrow.

“The other one is Zane Kirchner, who twisted his knee during the game. There is quite a bit of puffiness and inflammation around the knee. We will have a look at it and then be able to determine when he will be able to play again.”

On the positive side, No. 8 Ryan Kankowski is over his injury and will be considered for the Sharks this weekend.

“Ryan had a calf muscle strain and that is why we kept him out of selection last week. But from today he should be ready for selection.”
