Matfield 'true Bok leader'

2010-08-13 08:07

Sydney - For the best part of Victor Matfield's playing career, opponents have attempted to find some way of stopping him - and for the most part they've failed, according Wallabies forward Dean Mumm.

While the Springboks have been left reeling from three straight losses in the Tri-Nations, Mumm predicts that Matfield - their vice-captain - is set to drag them back to their best. And the Wallabies second-rower will do his utmost to stop the Bulls captain, who sits on 98 Test caps heading into Saturday week's Test against the All Blacks at Johannesburg, when he gets his chance.

But Mumm knows that Matfield, who will reach 100 Tests when he runs on against the Wallabies in the first of two games on the Highveld the following week, will be primed and ready.

While he agrees the absence of scrumhalf Fourie du Preez due to a shoulder operation will have an major effect on the Springboks, Mumm believes that Matfield is the team's true inspiration.

''Fourie du Preez is out. That's the way the way it is,'' Mumm said. ''Victor is very much the heart and soul and a significant part of the mental framework that is South African rugby. He is coming up to 100 Tests. His influence is massive and something we have to be aware of.''

Asked if it was possible to stifle Matfield, Mumm said: ''I don't know. There are plenty of people who have tried … and failed. You can be aware of what influence he has but don't give him any special sort of treatment.''

Mumm rejected comments that Matfield needed a rest. ''He has been playing pretty well,'' he said. ''The lineout for the Springboks wasn't great against the All Blacks for the first Test but then Victor certainly rectified that in the next two Tests (against NZ and Australia).

''He is too good a player not to get that lineout up and running again to its full capacity. But in terms of his play around the field, he is a very intelligent player. The work ethic that he has had has been really good. If he can continue to play well, he is going to pull the rest of them in.''

Australia have not won on the Highveld, where they will play the Springboks at Pretoria and Bloemfontein, since 1963.

''It's an exciting challenge for us to go over there to an intimidating crowd,'' Mumm said.

''It's a big environment. They will have regrouped. I'm sure they will be as strong as they have been in recent years.

''I've had a (Super 14) win at Bloemfontein. I haven't been lucky to win at Pretoria but the crowd has as much, if not more, passion than when at Super 14. If you change your mindset and think it is a wonderful challenge … well, I think we should.''

They Wallabies will reconvene in Sydney for their next training camp on Monday.

Then make him Springbok Captain goddamit. It's obvious that is what needs to happen. Smit will always have a glorious place in bok history - but he must bow out now.

  • Mark - 2010-08-13 08:16

At least the Wallaby players know more about the Springboks than our own SARU and Coach PdV. John Smit please do the hounourable thing and stop playing. Then at least Victor can Captain the side to the 2011 RWC final!!!! WAKE UP SARU and PDV!!!!!

  • Moersteen - 2010-08-13 08:16

Smeer heuning om sy bek, dan val die springbok op sy gat. Moenie vir hulle speletjies val nie bokke!

  • mark - 2010-08-13 08:20

Get Lambie !!!!! ZK is useless

  • mariaan thiart - 2010-08-13 08:21

Hahahah!!! Victor Matfield kan die Bulle lei maar hy is nie 'n Bok leier nie!!!!

  • Jakes - 2010-08-13 08:34

Sounds like Mumm should mmm, maybe book a room?

  • YES..!! - 2010-08-13 08:39

....YES, FULLY AGREE, ......JOHN SMIT IS A HAS-BEEN PALOOOOOKA.... ....GO VICTORIOUS MATFIELD..!!!

  • die yster - 2010-08-13 08:43

Hulle probeer ons mind f*ck. Ons span ontwrig.

  • brinjal - 2010-08-13 08:47

Does Dean Mumm also believe in the tooth fairy?

  • Richard - 2010-08-13 08:48

Aussie mind games already 2 weeks before the test trying to sow division in the Springbok Camp, not that I disagree with Mumm as Smits days are numbered as a Springbok and if de Villiers continues with Smits selection the Springboks will pay the price in the world cup next year

  • JR - 2010-08-13 08:48

Get over the fact that he plays for the Bulls. He is the only real captain on the field. He leads from the front and is consistent. Victor has two goals left before retiring from rugby, to win the super14 and WC back to back. This IS possible if we choose the correct team (and yes Province players as well) and the correct captain. And that is Victor Matfield, thank you very much.

  • TP - 2010-08-13 08:49

Mark and Kyle you r 100% correct. The Sharks is a better team when Smit is not playing...Sorry, Smit is the most unfit, overrated player in tests in super 14 currently. Great leader that needs to retire after 100 tests so that he can be remembered as a Morne du Plessis, and recently as Muri ( I can still play tests for 2 -3 years but will rather go out on a high with 800 wickets), not a non-playing captain

  • Coach - 2010-08-13 08:54

.....Victorious Matfield is also the Bok Coach..... ...because the Boks dont have a real coach...

  • 2 problems - 2010-08-13 08:57

2 problems in the Bok team... 1. AA PDV 2. Has-been John Smit.

  • Kotch - 2010-08-13 09:00

Trust the brain dead blou nulle to take Dean Mumms word to heart. Only a blou null will rate him to be an expert regarding Springbok rugby. Both Smit and Crapfield are past their sell-by-date, time to blood a new captain, get rid of the dead wood.

  • hasie - 2010-08-13 09:06

Very sly of you Ausie, Victor is a good captain for the bulls and that is it, he's time is nearly over and he, in my opinion is the problem, that the boks now have in their camp. I said it a time ago, there is 2 camps in the bok team, Blue Bulls and the rest and the main problem is Victor that want to be the captain of the boks!!!!! There is always someone who can't wait to play, if Victor don't stop his nonsens leave him out that he can go back with Bakkies and play CC

  • peebo - 2010-08-13 09:09

Matfield has been the inspiration for the Boks - this has been evident in their last 3 matches - the man is a has-been along with Smit and Spies

  • TJ - 2010-08-13 09:15

I get very suspicious when the Australians get involved with our Rugby politics. Why should they care if Victor Matfield is the 'true leader' of the boks. Under John Smit and Peter de Villiers, the Boks won all the trophies last year!. Ha, ha!

  • nick - 2010-08-13 09:23

Who cares what Dean Mumm thinks, Matfield is not the answer as Captain, he is also at the end of his very good career and should not be thrust into the spotlight of expectation. We need a young, dynamic leader who can lift the spirits of the team on the field and get the best from them. This person is not Victor Matfield.

  • gato - 2010-08-13 09:35

amazing that even the opposition can see it? our problem is smit and ""snorre"". time to move on with a new coach and new captain who can embrace the ""new game"".

  • Gert - 2010-08-13 09:36

Victor is also on the brink of going out. It will help the team nothing to change and stop listening to Aussie comments to make us fail. We have just 1 problem and that is leadership in the coaching staff. They are not a team that can develop a strategy acceptable for the Bokteam to follow and grow within, like they had. All players played well during our success road of S14, what is wrong now? Leadership is the problem and it starts with the coaching staff. When we win worldcups, we fire the coach, when we loose games we employ more excuses to please the media. Out system in this country is outdated and far from modern development within leadership growth. Sometimes you wonder if everything is not planned.

  • Nick - 2010-08-13 09:46

@ 2problems. Correction there are more than two problems in the Bok team. they are as follows: a. Hooker b. Prop c. Locks d. Fetchers e. 8th man f. Scrummy g. Fly half h. centres i. wing j. Full back k. Coach

  • Joe - 2010-08-13 09:47

Trying to cause divisions in a losing team. Lk at your own fortunes or keep Mumm

  • Argynome - 2010-08-13 09:48

I've heard of April fool jokes so this must be a Friday the 13th joke. Remember the 2nd test against NZ in the 1st 15seconds when VIKTOR missed the kick-off ball!! NZ nearly scored then and as a result the boks were always on the defence after that, ref conspiracies or not. But then to top it off he missed kick-off balls again during that game. VIKTOR is definitely past his prime - such a pity that Andries Bekker is no longer available this year....

  • Louis - 2010-08-13 09:51

You have got to be kidding me!! He has been absolutely nowhere during this Tri-Nations! I know many will differ, but watch him during a test and you will agree that, apart from a couple of lineouts, he doesn't do much on the field.

  • terry - 2010-08-13 09:53

Are all of you Blue Bulls plonkers who write in too thick to understand how the Aussies like to play mind games ..... they are deliberately trying to sow dissention within the Bok camp by talking up Victor Matfield as the 'true leader' of the Boks - to try and undermine John Smit's leadership of the team. With guys like you supporting the Boks, is it any wonder that they are light years ahead of SA in strategy???

  • koos - 2010-08-13 09:56

Good strategy from them to say something like this

  • scipio - 2010-08-13 09:56

Matfield already won the super 14 back to back you nub

  • Mo Stormer - 2010-08-13 09:56

If John Smit is a been, what is Matfield? Guy does nothing but give line out calls, which go wayward anyway. Can't wait for bekker to get back

  • Philip - 2010-08-13 10:03

So now you want me to believe an Aussie? Bob Dwyer referred to recently to Mumm as not of "international standard." But still some will grab this nonsens to get rid of Smit and - yes you right - PdV! In which Super 14 team in SA will Mumm walk in as lock? We are a sorry bunch of idiots.

  • Zee - 2010-08-13 10:11

Victor in the last few games was absolutely no better than Smit - they both looked tired and like they didnt even want to play. Neither of them is fit to be captain of the Boks! I would even pick Schalk over Matfield - Schalk captained the stormers and look what it did for his game, it forces him to be more disciplined. Fourie du Preez would also make an excellent captain if he's available.

  • RJ - 2010-08-13 10:17

There is only one person to blame for the decline of John Smit - Pieter De Villiers. If the plonker had not tried to turn him ino a full time prop then JS would not be in the precarious position that he is. JS has served his country with distinction & pride all his playing career. He has been criticised most of that time as well & yet just look at his results. I know there is no place for sentiment but somehow I think something needs to be done for this guy. He is actually a true leader - more so than Victor Matfield. As for what the Aussies say - mind games you BB supporters.

  • Grant - 2010-08-13 10:22

Dont you just love the way the Aussies and NZ plonkers think they know all about our rugby! Maybe Mumm should sort his own team out first before commenting on others!

  • Bee-Bull - 2010-08-13 10:23

    And, damn, he is FINE.

  • Uncle - 2010-08-13 10:35

Wow...some of the grammar in some of the posts below...Bulls fans?

  • Jaz @ Terry - 2010-08-13 10:37

If mind games it is, then all the Wallabies would gain from such remarks would be to negate Matfield's role as leader, which means what Mumm said has at least a bit of truth in it. If it does turn out to be all that and that Matfield was indeed the glue in the side over the last few years, that would mean that I withdraw all support for John Smit because, frankly, his perceived leadership skills was all that kept him in the my side...

  • Dave - 2010-08-13 10:45

More mind games from our mates dununda. We never learn.

  • STORMER - 2010-08-13 10:47

Hahahahahahaha, are you plonkers seriously believing this hype from Oz in the same way you believed the "Boks are the best/unbeatable" hype coming from NZ and OZ just before the Tri series started? Oi, om so dom te wees is geen grap....

  • RAMA - 2010-08-13 11:02

Victor ek dink Dean Mumm kyk na jou boude jy moet vesugtig wees ouboet!!!

  • Mindgames! - 2010-08-13 11:18

Here goes the Aussies...let the mind games begin!

  • Tenacious Dee - 2010-08-13 11:18

Most of you guys are idiots. VM is the best number 4 in the world, and has been for some time. Had an average Tri Nations, but if you are gonna write him off based on 3 average games then you have to get yourself checked for a mental disease. He has dominated lineouts, been a solid defender, a centre-like playmaker at times and an glorious leader for years... and still is. Mumm was complimenting him. As for mind games... its only mind games if you fall for it... which we wont. So shut up and give respect to this legend.

  • Simon - 2010-08-13 11:41

@RJ.... I am amazed that you can actually read, write and operate the internet... because your argument is that of an idiot!!

  • Red - 2010-08-13 11:46

Ag pleaaaze, have you seen him cry when things doesn't go according to his will? His negativity when things go wrong rubs off on all the other players. The Walabies are just playing games with your heads. A real leader shows his potential when a side loses, not when everything is honky dory They must fire all the boks older than 25 and get real players.

  • morne - 2010-08-13 12:40

Victor Matfield Springbok captain?? Probably the worst thing that can happen to SA rugby at this stage!! One of the most overated players in the country... next to Chilly Boy offcourse!!

  • Jualette - 2010-08-13 13:03

About time that we stopped playing with 14 players and a captain. Make Matfield the captain and then we can have 15 players on the field. All the comments about his captaincy of the Bulls. The trophy cabinet speaks for itself! What does the Shark cabinet look like with Smit as captain.

  • Rico - 2010-08-13 13:30

Frans is a great kicker, and a big boy. He needs to learn to pass the ball though. People in this country has an obsession with him and rugby. Pathetic. Get a life all you okes. SARU does a good job, and has done so for years. Andy has to run around the world, cause they have to approach the clubs directly. Clubs and agents don't answer to letters and emails, unless the $$'s flashes hard. And to be honest why spend a million bucks to get Frans here when there are very capable players back home anyways. I think we have enough talent at home. So what if we loose to the Blacks as long as we play good hard rugga. We'd probably whip the Aussies at home and loose to the Blacks. And still be able to whip any other international team. You SA rugby public and media are a joke, and the Aussie and Kiwi media know exactly how to use you to create some 'chaos' over here. The weakest thing about the SA rugby public and media is that they want the SA to win every single match all the time and win every single trophy. It has become such a crazy frenzy its a joke. The things people say on here clearly reflects that. My greatest hope is that rugby becomes a backwater sport in this country oneday, with cricket following suit. It would mean a lot less ill directed hate going around. Rugby in this country is evil, and always will be. Not because it is inherently evil not because the people playing it is evil, but because of the evilness of the people watching it. This 'proud' rugby tradition is fuel by racism, violence and filth.

  • @gato - 2010-08-13 13:44

Stop smoking your socks, mate. MATFIELD IS OVER THE HILL.

  • Zee - 2010-08-13 14:49

@Tenacious Dee: You call us idiots and then go onto say Matfield is the best number 4 in the world...do you even watch rugby? Idiot!!

Victorious Matfield = Bok Captain = Bok coach = Best..!!
