Kankowski joins Bok camp

2010-08-23 15:16

Johannesburg - Sharks loose forward Ryan Kankowski has joined the Springbok squad as a precaution on Monday.

Kankowski was released to his province after the training camp two weeks ago and put in a solid performance at the weekend as the Sharks downed Western Province in the Currie Cup.

    Kankowski should replace Pierre Spies!

  • Paddy - 2010-08-23 15:40

This boy can play. But can he produce at international level? Too many question marks in the Boks 8th man department - only one answer - Ashley Johnson from the Cheetahs. As good as Zinzan Brooke. Enough said.

PLS TAKE A LOOK AT NZ AND AUS LOOSIES,THEY HAVE NO LIGHTWEIGHT FLANKERS WHO PLAY SKINSTAD RUGBY!!!!SPIES IS BAD ENOUGH...JUAN@8,SCHALK,POTGIETER/LOUW SHOULD BE THE LOOSIES.BRUSSOUW WHEN FIT WITH SCHALK AND JUAN.BIG STRONG AND PHYSICAL...ALWAYS IN THE GAME AND NOT RUNNING WITH THE BACKLINE....SA IS BUILT ON THIS...KANKOWSKI LIKE SPIES ARE PERFECT IMPACT PLAYERS ONLY!!!!II CANT UNDERSTAND WHY WE ARE CHANGING PROVEN STRUCTURES FOR TEST RUGBY...ITS FOR BIG STRONG,PHYSICAL GUYS...NOT SEVENS SPECIALISTS...

  • Dave - 2010-08-23 15:55

He is probally the best No8 in the country, and in terms of speed is not far behind Spies, who should be a wing in any case. I hope de Villiers plays a fetcher cause if he does not then I am afraid that we are onto another hiding again. Now is the time to blood the youngsters, to take over from the oldies. Screw the Tri Nations, no matter what we did or do we are the targeted nation. Again we have forward passes and dear Mr McCall doing what he likes, there was no way we were going to win.

  • BOKKE - 2010-08-23 16:00

Ai man, ek wil so graag vir Duane Vermeulen in die groen en goud sien, Pdivvie kan mos nou eksperimenteer

  • Doring - 2010-08-23 16:09

Thank God for small mercies. Drop Spies as well as he is a joke at no. 8.John Smit takes the blame for missing a tackle on the strongest centre in the world. Where were our centres, wings and loose forwards ? surely not a hookers job to mark a centre! It all started with an aimless, hope for the best kick from Morne Steyn. Come back Fourie du Preez and make Steyn look good again.

  • forheavensake - 2010-08-23 16:20

Stop messing this poor man around!! Either use him in the Bok setup or allow him to dominate in the CC setup!!Currently the bokke are crying out for someone to relieve SPIES whose been pitiful the last 4games!!

  • Sh@rks Fever - 2010-08-23 16:43

"To be used as a precaution?" What is this? Leave him at the Sharks where he gets game time. Either play him or don't. To BOKKE? I do not understand why on earth you would want to see Vermeulen in the BOK team unless you support WP. He spends the whole game running around looking for fights and when he gets the ball he is tackled backwards. Look at what Keegan Daniel did to him. I do not mind Louw but please Vermeulen reminds me too muh about Bakkies, although Bakkies plays better rugby. If we want power and good defence look at Willem Alberts. And no not because his a Shark. I said this while he was still playing for the Lions.

  • @IZ IT - 2010-08-23 17:58

Get your head out of Joke White's @rse. Fat lot of good these "big" (small at heart) loosies did the Bokke in the 3N thus far. You obviously haven't seen how Keegan Daniel made the WP forwards seem like girly boys when tackled by him and when trying to tackle him. IT'S THE SIZE OF THE HEART AND CHARACTER. Something Spies and a lot of the Bokke never had too acquire due to their ice-cream and sweets lives.

Spies was good on Saturday, seemed to be one of the few boks capable of going forward with the ball in hand. Please stop this Duane crap he is too slow, Ryan and Alberts are both better 8th men then him. I think Potties should be Juan's backup and time to send Louw back to his province he really has been pathetic so far.

  • @Mike - 2010-08-24 05:14

Daar is nie pille vir domheid nie hoor!Spies is k@k en klaar man.

  • Stirlo - 2010-08-24 07:12

As an AB fan I consider Pierre Spies a superb no.8 who is highly respected in NZ.The Boks are made up of very good test rugby players who played with 100% passion on Saturday which in its self wasn't quite enough. The players & commitment are there , I simply qutstion the game plan. After viewing the game a few times I still can't work out what the Boks tactics where .Their defense was great but what was the offensive plan ?

  • Stirlo - 2010-08-24 07:23

Continuing on... James O'Connor is a very good young player but has struggled big time againgst the ABs. A target for the Boks ? But not by excessive high kicks to his wing but rather by getting him into a 2 on 2 defensive situation.

  • better than Vermeulen - 2010-08-24 07:48

Ryan Kankowski is way better than Duanne Vermeulen, ...as proved last Saturday..... ....Go Sharks..!!!

  • BALSAK(alias Blue Bul Hater) - 2010-08-24 07:50

@ Mike and Sh@rks Fever- Julle is 2 POEPHOLS!!!!!! I don't understand this fuss about the sharks after just 1 win over a TOP TEAM??? Did it mean so much to you, to knock over the HIGH FLYING WP, without their(WP) 9 springboks???

  • FRANCOIS B - 2010-08-24 08:04

Spies had two handoffs Saturday and and gained some meters; all of it was side ways to the touch line. Meaning nothing. At least Vermeuelen and Alberts knows the road to the tryline and they can tackle. Just see Vermeulens tackle on Bismarck Saturday. Spies and Kankowski; tackles I dont know. Loose trio will only be balanced out when a real fetcher is chosen.

  • dubloki - 2010-08-24 08:08

Kowski as a fetcher to replace Smith? Stop this nonsense of playing people out of position!!!

  • King Kankowski - 2010-08-24 08:11

Ryan Kankowski is Duanne Vermeulen's worst night-mare... ....He he he he..!!! ...poor Duanne Vermeulen.. ....poor WeePee....

  • baz - 2010-08-24 08:38

our present wings never score... put kankowski & spies on the wings !!

  • Viv - 2010-08-24 10:43

So awesome to have this highly talented guy included in the team. You rock Ryan and I look forward to watching you make those amazing break aways you are famous for!! At least 2 tries from you boy'o!

  • True 8 - 2010-08-24 11:33

If you look at the role a 8th man is supposed to play, it's one of cover defence, playing from the base of the scrum, carrying the ball at speed while beating the odd defender and also being the guy who ensures that an inside centre doesn't get isolated when straightening the line. A 8th man needs to be one of the most complete footballers on a rugby field. Look at Kieran Read. This guy has developed into probably the world's best 8 because he is such an all rounder. I am a Bull, proud to say it too, but the reality is that Pierre unfortunately lacks in the defensive dept as well as on the cover. The same goes for Kanko, who I admit is an awesome footballer. They are the same types of 8, love to attack and they do it damn well too but they tend to hide when it comes to their defensive duties. Duanne Vermeulen reminds me alot of Kieran Read, and I think if he is managed well he will become a fixture in the Bok line up just as Matfield or Burger. Sometimes not being selected like Vermeulen is a massive blessing as it give you time to develop that all round game. Look a Morne Steyn, a perfect example. Anyway, I hope Duanne is given an opportunity because he has already deserved it.

  • StormersSupporter - 2010-08-26 08:05

@True 8. Very nicely said. I agree with you fully. Duane does also attack quick well. Yes, not as good as spies and kanko, but as you said, he will develop that more and he is sound on defense and the break down and would be a good asset. Spies was great, but seems to have lost a bit of form like habana.
