'Injured' Steyn faces Montpellier

Paris - South African full-back Francois Steyn is set to play for his club Racing-Metro at Montpellier on Friday in spite of being left out of the Springbok side because of injury.

Steyn was named in the original 29-man squad for Saturday's Tri-Nations meeting with New Zealand in Soweto but was cut after injuring his left knee in Racing's pre-season friendly against Perpignan.

The news that the 23-year-old will make his first Top 14 appearance of the season rather than helping South Africa get their Tri-Nations campaign back on track is unlikely to go down well with the Bok management.

"I don't want to say that anyone is being disingenuous but the difficulty with players overseas is the communication and I am concerned by the very scarce information coming back from Racing-Metro," Springboks' team manager Andy Marinos told a news conference this week.

Steyn last played for South Africa against Wales in June since when he has fallen out with coach Peter de Villiers who is known to be opposed to picking Europe-based players.

South Africa have lost the opening three games of this year's tournament and have little hope of hanging on to the Tri-Nations title they won last season.

The Boks face the All Blacks on Saturday and then two Tests against Australia on August 28 and September 4.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
