Habana transgression 'a lie'

Johannesburg - SA Rugby has stated categorically that reports in weekend papers that Springbok wing Bryan Habana transgressed team protocol by staying out late are devoid of any truth.

A Sunday newspaper reported that Habana allegedly broke the team’s curfew by staying out until 01:00 on the morning of the Tri-Nations Test against the All Blacks in Bloemfontein.

However, following a proper investigation into the matter by the Springbok Management and SA Rugby, the conclusion was made that Habana did not transgress any team rules.

“We view this in a very serious light and feel the report was based on hearsay and devoid of any truth. I spoke to Springbok coach Peter de Villiers and other members of the team management and they all assured me Bryan had done nothing wrong,” said Andy Marinos, acting managing director of SA Rugby.

“Members of SA Rugby staff as well as some journalists were at the hotel saw Bryan return to the team hotel after dinner. It was between 22:30 and 22:45. I want to reiterate that Bryan did not transgress team protocols.

“This malicious report takes away some of the gloss from the Springboks’ marvelous Tri-Nations victory over the All Blacks in Bloemfontein and we are looking forward to another good performance from the Boks in the Absa Stadium Durban on Saturday.”
