Habana lauds Bok victory

Adnaan Mohamed

Hamilton – Springbok wing Bryan Habana says the Springbok’s Tri-Nations title clinching victory against the All Blacks at the Waikato stadium on Saturday was better for him than when the Boks last won the Tri-Nations in 2004.

“The last eight weeks has been phenomenal to say the least. In 2004, I was a 21-year old youngster. I played with guys like Marius Joubert, De Wet Barry, Percy Montgomery and Os du Randt who were my heroes.

To be able to be a part of a side where I have been able to get 54 caps and score 35 tries for my country is really something special. I will definitely treasure this and look to build on in the future,” Habana said after the Boks beat the All Blacks 32-29 on Saturday.

“The British and Irish Lions tour comes around every 12 years and there is definitely something special in that. But to come over to win in Hamilton against a very good New Zealand side is just as sweet. I treasure both series victories and I feel we are in a good place at the moment.

“The great thing about this team is that we are not really too worried about what happens outside the four lines. If Francois Steyn allowed the booing to worry him those 60m kicks would not have gone over.

“The motivation we have as a team is an unbelievable thing and is something that we would like to cherish. We have an unbelievable group of players, a great management team that includes the coaches, the medical staff and the conditioning team.

According to Habana South African sides have always been strict on structure. But the reason this team is excelling at the moment is because it’s one big happy family. But with that family unit comes a huge responsibility.

“We have a team that’s hungry for success. We also have a team of leaders in this team that really want to lead the way in which this family is being run.

“John Smit is probably the best captain I have played under. The youngsters are learning a great deal from him. They are also performing and bring something special to the side. That’s what keeps this side going. It’s going to be sad to see guys like Fransie (Frans Steyn) and Jean  (De Villiers) going overseas. It’s like losing brothers,” he said.
