Boks vow to step up

2010-07-15 09:21

Wellington - South Africa has promised a sharply improved performance in the second rugby Test against New Zealand on Saturday to avoid an 0-2 start to its defense of the Tri-Nations title.

The Springboks said they played poorly when they lost 32-12 in last weekend's first Test at Eden Park and are out to recapture the form that gave them three wins over the All Blacks in last year's Tri-Nations series.

New Zealand's win at Auckland was comprehensive, however, and South Africa needs a massive form reversal to have any chance of leaving New Zealand for Australia with a 1-1 record.

Winger Joe Rokocoko and scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan were ruled out of New Zealand's team on Thursday because of injury. Rokocoko has a strained hamstring and was replaced by Rene Ranger, who will make his first start for the All Blacks.

Cowan, who has an abdominal strain, was named among the reserves, with Piri Weepu handed a starting spot.

The only changes the Springboks made were forced by an injury to prop Jannie du Plessis and the suspension of lock Bakkies Botha.

Coach Peter de Villiers and captain John Smit have expressed confidence in the players beaten at Auckland to turn the tables on the All Blacks at Wellington.

De Villiers said South Africa had "a bad day" at Eden Park and the same players were capable of making amends.

"I trust the bunch of people that are with me, they just weren't on song last weekend," he said. "These boys are much better than what they showcased on Saturday. They just had a bad game and I expect them to be back to form this weekend.

"When Tiger Woods has a bad day, it doesn't mean he's not the No. 1 golf player in the world. He's just had a bad day."

Smit was also confident South Africa had the resources to reverse last weekend's loss, though neither he nor de Villiers signaled change to the tactics which proved ineffective in Auckland

"It won't happen everyday that everybody is one percent off their game and if you are one percent off against a team like the All Blacks, then you will get hammered," Smit said.

New Zealand nullified South Africa's set pieces in Auckland, denying it the platform from which to impose itself on the game. The All Blacks' additional superiority at breakdowns allowed them to play with pace and width, which is their strength, but not South Africa's.

New Zealand co-coach Wayne Smith doubted the Springboks would attempt major tactical change in Wellington.

"It can go either way, you can change your game or you can try what you are doing better - with more passion and a different mentality," Smith said. "And I imagine that will be the route that they will take."

Less talk more action, that goes to the players & coach. After last weeks pathetic performance, I am sceptical. Its one thing losing a game, but an entirely different thing being demolished, thrashed, humiliated, embarrased. So what so different about this week? & if they can, by some miracle, step up suddenly with more of less the same team, why the hell did they not do this last week?

  • BC - 2010-07-15 09:42

They can step where ever they like - this team won't win. Everyone, including commentators from overseas can see whats wrong, but our coaches cannot see it and they don't read these papers. I'm not going to repeat what everyone else making comments is saying but without those changes this team won't win.

  • VOTED! - 2010-07-15 09:43

Read this open letter to John Smit and the Springboks http://tinyurl.com/37xbolw

  • MUHAMMED - 2010-07-15 09:53

Bakkies is still and will always be a Bok Legend, please drop Chilliboy,i cant understand why he is in the side.i doubt he can even make it in a Club rugby setup,he is not even a weak link,he is the MISSING link

  • Big Heads - 2010-07-15 10:06

The Boks have no respect for the All Blacks. The Boks see it as (we can just show up and win) if that is not gloating i do not know what is

  • chris - 2010-07-15 10:07

This has nothing to do with this article but I am so sick a tired or reading all these sh!t comments by people who think they know more than the people whos lives are rugby, who study the game and have the inside track. Every coach who has coached the Boks has had to put up with this. There are lots of players playing top rugby in SA and not all of them can play for the Boks. I also disagree with some of PDV selections but come on people we have lost one game, one bloody game and most of you are acting like we are rated 10th in the world rankings. What sickens me most are the people who bad mouth players who have given so much to SA rugby, like WC, tri-nations, super 14 victories. And now they are sh!t, fat, thugs and useless…..GROW UP PEOPLE!! I also get (edited)ed off when we loss but just think back and think about the last 4 years and how much pleaser and fun this team has given us.

  • Johan - 2010-07-15 10:08

Does anyone really believe we can win any world class team with our present scrumhalf. His gamestyle puts the complete team under severe pressure during the whole game from the first till the last second!

  • ABSupporter - 2010-07-15 10:09

In the words of the mercurial Peter De Villiers, "...talk is cheap, but the money buys the whiskey"... hahahaha... Bring it SpringTHUGS... All Blacks by 15 and another bonus-point victory.. Hope Alain Rolland has a better showing than his countryman, Alan Lewis and sends a few more of the SpringTHUGS for an early shower...

  • The Real Slim Shady - 2010-07-15 10:15

We need De Villiers at 12, and Steyn at 15, Hougaard at 14 then we will beat the All Blacks

  • Jaco - 2010-07-15 10:31

@ Chris, thanks dude. Agree 100%. People should chill or rather not watch rugby.

  • Bokke - 2010-07-15 10:45

Yah as most people I think we would be better off with Gio on the wing, Jean at 12 and Ruan at 9 and Dewald on for Louwe, but I think before we make that change we need to give the current XV another shot. You can't blame those players for the loss last week, the entire pack had a bad performance. I think everyone doubting them are in for a shock this week as we see them return to their normal game.

  • ABs forever - 2010-07-15 10:54

During the Super 14 I found it extremely entertaining reading all the comments from Blue Bulls supporters to Stormers supporters, an visa versa. One would never say the two support the same idiots in the green and gold jerseys. Now, with the Tri-Nations in full swing, and the Boks getting their - excuse my French - asses whipped by the world's best team, it's even more entertaining to see who you beer swagging, biltong chowing, moustache wearing idiots with the EXTREMELY low IQ's will be blaming for your pathetic attempts at defending the trophy. Another topic I find particularly interesting is the fact that after winning the Tri Nations all of three times, as well as the Bulls winning the Super 14 three times, how you can even dare to compare yourself to the greatness that is New Zealand rugby???? It's mind-boggling to say the least, but I have have to congratulate you for being so passionate about the sport :-)

  • KC - 2010-07-15 10:58

I can't agree more with CHRIS. well said mate!!!!!!!!! One question to ALL the people who have negitive comments about the boks, individual player and coaching staff. DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW A RUGBY BALL FEELS LIKE? YOU DUMB IDIOTS!!!!

  • Joe - 2010-07-15 11:15

Talk is cheap snorre!!! All you can play is kicking rugby, not good enough anymore!! Boks gonna get thrashed again. Go AB's!!!!

  • Boks No.1 - 2010-07-15 11:34

@ Chris: I agree with you for the most part, but how do you respond to the comments over Ricki Januarie not being the best scrum half available to the boks? I say this in light of Morne Steyn being reported on SS this morning as saying that he feels alot more pressure when Januarie is on the field, a Bok talking and not one of the 30mil coaches on this forum that you are addressing, than when the likes of Fourie is playing. You need to be mindful that all banter is good, it promotes the sport, and allows for a medium for all of us coaches to vent ...

  • CHRIS - 2010-07-15 11:37

Mr.Div,I am available to play scrumhalf on Saturday.Small problem,I am overweight, out of shape but promise not to let the Boks down. This is your last opportunity to win. Will retire after the game.

  • Rigby is my life - 2010-07-15 11:38

Funny how we are expected to beat the AB's in New Zealand all the time now, where previous coaches were never expected to do the same. I guess that is PDV's own fault for setting the bar so high.

  • Uncle - 2010-07-15 11:43

@ABSupporter...Suck it sheep molester! As for the game...Drop Pierre Spies and we'll win. Rugby is not a beauty contest.

  • LN - 2010-07-15 11:51

@Chris I agreen with you 100%. This weekend the boks will win by 10pts!

  • Graham - 2010-07-15 11:56

like that will make a difference....Dan Carter and the All Blacks are once again going to beat the Boks...............The All Blacks will be crowned the Tri-Nation champs at the end of the season and will then go on to be crowned the "World Champs" in 2011 - With Australia in 2nd place......

  • England Supporter - 2010-07-15 12:02

The comment AB Supporter made, shows that some people have only watched rugby and never played, much like parents that want their kids to play rugby because they were useless them selves and make the biggest noise around the field. AB Supporter i feel sorry for you. YOU have no clue !!!!!!!!!! Boks by 10 Points

  • Boss Barry - 2010-07-15 12:04

You can cry as much as what you want to. Score 21 -17 to the AB's. Professional players should not have a bad day, Tiger Woods is one guy, the boks are 15 players. Wake up loooooooosers

  • @BC - 2010-07-15 12:20

I tend to agree with you about our coaches. I doubt that PdV will ever take advice because the poor fool suffers from delusions of grandeur.

  • Dale - 2010-07-15 12:20

It is difficult to beat the AB's on their own turf but the Springboks just played K@K on the day (bad day at the office) Can we expect a better Springbok team this weekend . . . . hopefully

  • World Champoins - 2010-07-15 12:23

To ABs forever and ABsupporter. The springboks have won 2 World Cups and the only world cup won by the ABs was won when the Springboks did not play and that is the only reason they won the Web Ellis trophy.

  • World Champoins - 2010-07-15 12:24

  • Stefan - 2010-07-15 12:27

I think a team reshuffle is needed. Get the guys out of there comfort zones. 15. MORNE Steyn 14. Gio Aplon 13. J. Fourie. 12. J. DeVilliers 11. Habanna 10. B. James. 9. R. Januarie. FOrwards I think needs to stay the same.

  • Louis @ ABs forever - 2010-07-15 12:29

I refer to your question: "how you can even dare to compare yourself to the greatness that is New Zealand rugby????" Easy, on facts: current Rugby World Cup champs, Super 14 champs, 2009 Springboks won AB's when played, IRB ranked 2nd in the world, etc. I know it is difficult to accept other people's comments when you only see your own side, but please look at the facts before commenting.

  • Ruthless - 2010-07-15 12:38

Only 2 things went wrong last week. The inclusion of Bakkies and the inclusion of Ricky . In a close game you can not play with 14 men and after the head butt Bakkies knew he could only give 60% because the ref would be onto him. Ricky does not even make the Stormers starting XI????? The Boks are a good team and yea the AB' s are much better than last year. Juan we miss you as well.

  • Spartan - 2010-07-15 12:38

@chris...last saturday we didn't just lose, we were thrashed & to cap it all we were disgraced by Bakkies & James, thugery. Losing is one thing, but getting thrashed & disgraced, when we are supposed to be the reigning T-nations & WC Champs, then its not acceptable, you might be happy with that, BUT IM NOT, @KC youre the dumb idiot, we all know rugby, thats exactly why we expect world champs to perform & behave like world champs, not incompetent & dirty players that lurch from on inconsistent performance to the next.

  • Jaco - 2010-07-15 12:44

@ AB Supporter - World Cup victories - SA 2: NZ 1. And we only started in 95. It could have easily been 3. That is how we can compare ourselves to the best in the world. O accept we don't choke on big occassions. Knob!!!

  • Jaco - 2010-07-15 12:44

  • REALITEIT - 2010-07-15 12:51

  • Heluim De Villiers - 2010-07-15 12:51

  • EH - 2010-07-15 12:57

We need Aplon at 15 & Houghard or Pienaar at 9! January's to slow and past his time, Zane is an average player and at international level one needs an above average player/game braker like Aplon. Word wakker Div !!!!

  • low iq supporter - 2010-07-15 13:01

@abs forever: its funny you should say " excuse my French" because if i recall correctly the French have upset your so called " best team in the world" in the last 2 RWC ..... the All Blacks are a great team but you lack BMT.....as far as im concerned that is very important. one bad game and we are crap? over the last four years we have been the most consistent rugby nation, check the stats. if i recall the tri-nations before SA won the World Cup we had a bad tour to NZ, although we did keep 18 of our best players at home that year to rest, maybe we have learnt not peak to early and choke like the all blacks as for Januarie,i believe he is the weak link, he makes bad choices and puts huge pressure on the team...... we can go up another gear or two but we need to enforce our game!

  • piepies - 2010-07-15 13:03

going down again but this time with more than 20 points!cant watch the game bcaz its going to hurt to much to see us thrashed by NZ bcaz of stupid team selection!!!!!!!!!

  • Johan Theron - 2010-07-15 13:05

I agree that we are missing Fourie, but January needs decent ball fron the forwards. In my mind the boks were outmuscled, therefore putting even more pressure on the scrummie.

  • Suzie's Cake - 2010-07-15 13:18

  • GOD - 2010-07-15 13:25

Ball Bakkies vows to step up, what a great fat, slow, coward vegimite he is, Am I missing the point? Saffas are reknown for cheating, GET OUT OF MY COUNTRY and while your at it GO HOME

  • BakkiesFan - 2010-07-15 14:20

Remember-New Zealand is not a country, its an island! And boring, muddy cold useless island. You know a team is under pressure when after one win they are hyped up as champions of the world. We did that for years in the 2000-2003 period. I am just going to luv the expression on McCaw's face when he is made to explain for their loss on saturday. And then I am going to drive to Aplon's town and mock all the All Black supporters there. HAHAHAHAHA The All Blacks are choker champions and the Haka is the gayest thing in the world.

Get rid of Has-been Smit..... Get rid of Fat boy Januarie.... Get rid of quota coach PDV...

  • KDP - 2010-07-15 15:39

Please drop January. Fair enough John Smit has done a lot for the boks concerning leaderhip. But maybe its time to get the right hooker with a little more fire.Unfortunately Johan is not a prop. So select another captain and let John step down. The rest of the team is in my opinion correct.

  • @ World Champions - 2010-07-16 02:14

It's not the worlds fault SA was being all racist during the 87 RWC. And if you think that particular WC doesn't count for anything, then you're just plain thick as without the first there can never be a second and SA would not have won anything in 95 that brought you nation together (even if it was by food poisoning). Who's gonna bite??

  • AL - 2010-07-17 10:16

You cannot "step up" if you are on the back foot within the first 5 minutes due to ill discipline. This has costs us the Tri-Nations. Get Raun on the field, Jean to No 12. and find a wing Mr DIV. What do you not understand!
