Steyn back for Boks

2010-08-08 17:01

Johannesburg - The Springbok selectors have named a training squad of 29 players to attend a four-day camp in Johannesburg next week in preparation for the home leg of the Vodacom Tri-Nations tournament, which kicks off on August 21.

The final squad of 24 for the three home Tests will be confirmed on Friday 13 August and will assemble in Johannesburg on Sunday 15 August. The match 22 for the Test against the All Blacks at Soccer City will be announced on Tuesday 17 August.

The group includes the bulk of the squad that did duty during the away leg of the competition, with only Andries Bekker and Ruan Pienaar unavailable due to injury.

Three players have been recalled – Cheetahs flank Juan Smith and Sharks wing JP Pietersen, who have made a successful return from injury, and Racing Metro fullback Frans Steyn who last played against Wales in June. Steyn was, however, injured in a pre-season game on Friday and will undergo a scan in Paris on Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury.

Two more players who are returning from injury - Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis and Vodacom Cheetahs flank Heinrich Brussöw - have been invited to join the group.

Centre Jaque Fourie is serving a suspension and cannot be considered for selection for the Johannesburg Test on 21 August.

The Boks will face Australia in subsequent Tests in Pretoria (August 28) and Bloemfontein (September 4).

  • AT STORMERS FANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - 2010-08-08 17:18

hahahahahah unlucky guys your beloved duene slow vermeleun WILL NEVER REPLACE SPIES OR EVEN KANKO.Here is a suggestion why doesn't duene pack his bags and leave SA for good his style of play will suite the northern hemisphere for all i care.hahahahaha i am so glad chillliboy, flip, zane, hougaard are there i love it mark my words this is the bulk of the world cup squad NICE ONE PETER I LOVE THIS SQUAD.

  • Christo - 2010-08-08 17:20

Great to see continuity and consistency, but surely there must be other scrumhalves in SA.

  • draadsitter - 2010-08-08 17:20

cue overwhelming wave of indifference from SA rugby fans...

  • Boss Barry - 2010-08-08 17:21

J P Pietersen, Ricky, Butch, Bryan, Jaque, Jean. John, Chilliboy are all "sell by date" players, see us loose al the games !!! I am hardly wrong

  • The Shark - 2010-08-08 17:22

I like the look of this team, especially the fact that the selectors haven't made to many changes. Maybe I'm being a bit on the optimistic side, I reckon the losses the team experienced overseas might've done more good for them, than if we'd won every game we played. Allowing the same team to make right all the mistakes they made on the tour could well benefit us in the long run.

  • Norman - 2010-08-08 17:28

Very happy to see Gio Aplon and Juan de Jongh in the group of 29,however if the coach wants to go to war with Victor Matfield,John Smit,Chillyboy Ralepelle,Ricky January and Zane Kirchner he must expect to loose 3 x tests in a row.

  • Kokkie - 2010-08-08 17:34

Gaan die man dan nooit leer nie ? Wat maak Chilliboy, Pierre Spies, Danie Rossouw, Jean de Villiers, Ricky Januarie, Butch James, Zane Kirchner en Wynand Olivier nou nog in die groep ? Nee wat, we are failing to plan, thus planning to fail.

  • Fanie - 2010-08-08 17:36

Butch James(yellow card man);Ricky Januarie(useless);Chillyboy(useless);Kirschner(tries not good enough);John Smit(fat and not best);Schalk Burger(yellow card man)... Bismark stay injured please! Where is Gary Botha? Dwayne Vermuelen? Biggest problem?/We still have the clown Div...

  • scud - 2010-08-08 17:40

This is not a team for the future. I would have dropped Smit,de Villiers,Olivier,Januarie,James I would have brought in Lambie,Blaauw,Hoffman, van der Heever

  • Rugby Supporter - 2010-08-08 17:42

There are only a few new upcoming players with huge tallent, which is not enough and to many out of form players, whcih did not deserve their place in the tean on the away leg of the current Tri Nation series. This team is going no where. They have stuck to the old worn out guys who has won the previous worlg cup when they wer at their prime, but will be to old for the next year world cup. With the 2010 Tri Nations belonging to the All Blacks already it is now the time to start building a new team, which should have happened two year ago. The current management and couching staff just do not have the vison to build a new Bok squad who can win the 2011 world cup. I am afraid that time has run out for us to build the best team.

  • Die Antwoord - 2010-08-08 17:46

Bring it on ! There is a Black cloud moving towards SA, and it brings with it a style of rugby which SA cannot answer.

  • Transky - 2010-08-08 17:55

This squad is pretty much the same as that which caught 3 klaps in a row, while in New Zealand and OZ. Sorry not good enough to win my support. Expect three more klaps on home soil I'm afraid.

  • roy - 2010-08-08 17:58

sharks supporter but having butch in this squad is a joke !

  • SR - 2010-08-08 18:00

Great to see Frans back but Ricky and Chilli? Why oh why..... could also give more youngsters a go....

  • Bok coach 2012 onwards - 2010-08-08 18:01

1 Guthro 2 John 3 CJ 4 Flip 5 Victor 6 Schalk 7 Juan 8 Kanko 9 Francois 10 Morne 11 Habana 12 Jean 13 Juan 14 Gio 15 Bok Steyn 16 BJ 17 Beast 18 Spies 19 Brussow 20 Flo 21 Butch 22 JP Bring BJ, Beast and Brussow on in second half (Sharks front row, won't be disruptive, the guys know each other) Heinrich as impact player, wouldn't start him after a long injury. Would also like to see JP on wing again, replacing any of the back three. (Gio on fullback if replacing Steyn, but most probably Habana). Get a proper hooker in the squad so we can give John a rest! (Tiaan Liebenberg/Gary Botha)

  • Bigger Picture - 2010-08-08 18:09

  • slg - 2010-08-08 18:11

After 40 years as a Springbok supporter, I no longer am following the team or watching games. It is painful to watch the stubbornness and immaturity of the administrators, managers and coach. A strong brand is being ravaged by misadministration, mismanagement and miscoaching.

  • paul - 2010-08-08 18:12

  • haha - 2010-08-08 18:15

Why am I not surprised at this team? At least Francois Steyn is back, unfortunately he'll be joining a loosing "grandpa" team. JP and Juan Smith could have been replaced with much younger, better players who wants to play rugby, the same for a lot of these players who have forgotten how to play rugby. And still the idiots persist with January and 3rate Chiliboy. And John Smit.. I guess we will loose the rest of the trinations games with this "old" and tired team.

  • Kevan - 2010-08-08 18:17

Fanie in English is a p$#%@s or in American english is an asshole. Make your choice. There are players who give away more yellow cards then butch especially the Blue Bull players. Leave the guy alone. He is playing good rugby at the moment, you wont know that because you do not watch the talent of a guy if he does not play for your team.

  • Jawellnofine - 2010-08-08 18:20

No Vermeulen either. Lets hope Hougaard gets the start ahead of the garden gnome at least. I can think of some hookers and scrumhalves that are extremely dissapointed! Must say I am happy to see Heinrich and Bismarck back though.

  • Andy Strydom - 2010-08-08 18:25

The All Blacks caught everybody by suprise with their high paced game, but there is enough talent here for our guys to make a good account of themselves. They need to be more effective at the breakdowns - and not miss their first time tackles. If they can get those two areas of the game right - this team will be competitive. C'mon guys - show everybody what you are capable of.

  • Couch Potato Selector - 2010-08-08 18:28

    15. F Steyn 14. JP Peterson 13. De Jongh 12. De Villiers 11. Aplon 10. Steyn 9. Hougaard 8. Spies 7. Smith 6. Burger 5. Matfield 4. Flip 3. BJ 2. Smit 1. Beast

  • Molefe - 2010-08-08 18:31

Once again the selectors miss the whole point. January (joke), Butterfingers Habana (joke), Wynand Olivier (double joke), JP Pietersen (Bigest Joke) and Butch James. I mean please... what do these peple still have to do for you to see that they are has beens.... And that is just the backs.... That leaves us with John Smit, Burger, BJ Botha, CJ vd Linde... I predict that the Bokke will not win a single game in the Tri-Nations this year. Not only because of the pathetic selections... But because they are going to keep kicking away possesion, and they do not have a clue about attacking the ball in the loose. Not to mention standing back in defense and watching the ball carrier run at them. There is no gameplan, there is no coach, there is no will to win, and most of all... there is not one testicle in SARU! Sorry people, maybee next time.........

  • nick - 2010-08-08 18:31

why change a losing team? Should bring in more players from the touch rugby leagues of the world Majority so called stars are overrated lazy individuals that just show up for a pay day .The boks already in deep kak why not select some of the real performers of super14 and currie cup. This current squad with the lack of commitment and discipline shown won't make the quarter final of world cup

  • Clive - 2010-08-08 18:39

No imagination whatsoever. More of the same. However one says it, I'm afraid the results will also be much the same. I think it was Albert Einstein who said that stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result each time. This would apply to selections and the game plan - if we have one.

  • spanner - 2010-08-08 18:48

@Kevin, hey bud, dont know if you are coming or going. Who is Fanie. I know a Fanny and this aint no arsehole.

  • Bruin Bok - 2010-08-08 19:11

Baie beter spelers hier in SA.

  • Div_da_Clown - 2010-08-08 19:18

Div and his coaching circus.....including Paddy what a joke!!! Come on Div, you and the selecters need a P...Klap....listen to the fans and not with your Rands...there are better players that you have not even sniffed past that big SNOOR of yours!!! Watch some Cyrrie Cup, it will amaze you to see how rugby is played !!! Quit while you can...

  • HERMAN - 2010-08-08 19:22

I am now watching the Spingboks and supporting the opposite side I will start supporting them again when players get selected on merrit. Sad Pieter Div ek moet erken jy het my liefde vir springbok rugby vernietig.

  • Bok-006 - 2010-08-08 19:23

  • Koos Kaap - 2010-08-08 19:26

Die WP is in my bloed, maar ek is nie so eenogig soos sommige Bulls ondersteuners nie. Twee vrae: (1) Waar is Patrick Lambie?

  • Vic J - 2010-08-08 19:28

@Kevin, sorry did did not see Fanie, the p****l, comments.

  • hahaha - 2010-08-08 19:30

Vermeulen is not there because he is a roaming slow battering donkey behind the scrum. Thanks snor for picking this squad our bloggers here indeed think they are experts in team selection.Hell even vermuelen is being rated as the best number 8 in SA my gosh you all can whine, complain and b......ct CATCH A WAKE UP THESE PLAYERS WILL MAKE THE MAJORITY OF NEXT YEARS WORLD CUP.Well done to chilli, flip, spies, kirchner, potties, gurthro you guys are representing go bulls and the bokke.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bring him in... - 2010-08-08 19:51

Steyn is a hasbeen, so bring him into the team...please...and lets see the Boks get hammered again, this time at Tri Nations is lost Bokkies....and next up for you plnkers is the Super 14 next year...and then the BIG one...the World Cup. I rate your chances of making the semis....none..!!! Your boys are too fat...too unfit....too thick, too stupid and have too many light blue bulls in it.

  • Varknek - 2010-08-08 19:52

Come on guys. Ricky Januarie is the best scrumhalf in the world and Pieter de Villers has proven over and over again that their is no better coach in South Africa. Noakes knows nothing about rugby. Rugby players, especially the older guys, should play every weekend to keep them sharp. Bulked up John is good for another 4 years, VIVA BOKS.

  • Marius - 2010-08-08 20:11

  • kiwi - 2010-08-08 20:11

how do you safas put up with these selections.we in nz saw the s14 and your selectors have lost the plot.although we giving you a rugby lesson at present, its not as sweet knowing you missing big names in injury and selection.we are shocked you are not choosing certain players that dominated the s14 for you....thats the yard stick.our weakest position in nz is scrumhalf, you guys are blessed and choose the worst!sorry guys but the 3n is moving!

  • Jakkalas - 2010-08-08 20:19

Why does he persist with the slowest scrummie in SA rugby. When will this arrogant coach wake up with his cronnies that are not up to scratch for this level of the game. He did not play the S14 and get selected on his previous once off good game sound very much like some of the other coaches we know that stuck with out of touch tactics and players that are just not good enough for this level. Same is gonna happen as with "twinkle toes Rose" at some stage they will realise these players are not the answer. Wake Pieter de Villiers and take of that big red nose you are an embarrasment to rugby and your country.

  • Samoosa - 2010-08-08 20:23

Butch James? January? Ag nee, ons kan maar los!!!!

  • The Critic - 2010-08-08 20:39

Nasty selections : Schalk Burger (Defensive strategy : yes; Attacking : No. Not a fetcher) Danie Rossouw (ALWAYS knocks the ball when we're on attack - useless) John Smit (c'mon John, even YOU must know you're finished - get a coaching job please!!!) Bryan Habana (take a break Bryan - you're not in it this year bru) Ricky Januarie (WTF!!!!!! - Ricky, you suck boet - retire NOW!!!!) Butch James (How does it feel to KNOW you're not the best Butch) Wynand Olivier (nickname ''Bostic'' - this guy can't pass, please leave) Zane Kirchner (So predictable - catch & kick back, boring really) Pierre Spies (He just needs a kick in the nuts to get vooooma!) My team with view on RWC 2011 :- (1) Gurthro Steènkámp (Rock steady) (2) Chiliboy Ralepelle (at least this guy is improving and not in Smit's shadow) (3) Tendai Mtawarira (Beast!!! - just get the same flair as against the British & Irish Lions) (4) Andries Bekker (Jumper, runner & defender - extra loose forward) (5) Victor Matfield (Just, just making the team - his farewell RWC) (6) Heinrich Brussöw (Boy, did we miss this fetcher in the 3N's) (7) Juan Smith (Hard, recentless, zest, determination) (8) Ryan Kankowski (Great runner/speed, defender & ball skill) (9) Fourie Du Preez (Also farewell RWC, but still the best) (10) Morne Steyn (who else?)(Consistent accuracy at poles) (11) Gio Aplon (Space maker, gap-taker, speed) (12) Jean de Villiers (Still the best line-breaker IMO and timely intercepts) (13) Juan de Jongh (Signs of a 2nd Danie Gerber - a must in the team) (14) Lwazi Mvovo (Lomu se gat man) (15) Frans Steyn (Poisitional play, huge boot, full speed running, experience) (16) Tiaan Liebenberg (because he deserves it) (17) CJ van der Linde (Has the experience) (18) Flip van der Merwe (Young & determined) (19) Dewald Potgieter (can play 6, 7 or 8 - hard player with guts) (20) Francois Hougaard (covers 9, 11, 14 - very good) (21) Patrick Lambie (Juba no. 2 in the making - also covers at 10) (22) JP Pietersen (Strong runner - covers also for 12 & 13) Strongest team possible. PS : RWC 2011 will also be Pdivvy's farewell - thank goodness!!.

  • Bitterbal - 2010-08-08 20:54
