The All Blacks believe the South Africans showed their game was getting back on track, despite losing 9-14 to the Wallabies.
Smith said there were "ominous" signs from the Boks, which could spell danger for New Zealand in Saturday's clash in Port Elizabeth.
The Kiwi assistant feels the Boks lost because they were rusty and their hit-out against Australia will have improved them for this weekend.
"It looked like they just ran out of steam a bit at the end," said Smith on the website, stuff.co.nz.
He feels it will be a massive test for a New Zealand side full of players looking to get into the final World Cup squad.
"We are expecting another physical and torrid match with them," said Smith.
The All Blacks will announce their team on Thursday.
