Absent O'Connor faces axe

Sydney - Wallabies backline star James O'Connor may miss next weekend's Tri-Nations Test against New Zealand as punishment for failing to attend Australia's Rugby World Cup squad announcement on Thursday.

O'Connor also missed the official team photograph and will now face a code of conduct hearing at which he may be suspended for the August 27 Test in Brisbane, Australia's last Test before the World Cup.

The Australian Rugby Union has asked the 21-year-old O'Connor to explain his absence from the squad announcement at Sydney Airport.

Wallabies team officials told media at the time that O'Connor could not be present because of "personal issues."

A team spokesperson said on Friday O'Connor had been asked to explain his absence.
