The Volksblad newspaper reports that De Bruyn - who is contracted to the Cheetahs until May next year - could play for Lyon between November and January.

This means that he might join up with former Springbok scrumhalf, Ricky Januarie, who earlier this year announced his retirement from international rugby and joined the French outfit.

The Cheetahs' provisional Super Rugby squad will start their preparations for the tournament on November 14 in Bloemfontein and start their campaign against the Lions on February 25. This means that - should De Bruyn be off to play in France - he would return in time for the Super Rugby tournament.

"We haven't agreed on anything yet in paper, but are willing to release him for three months if the overseas team pays his salary for this period," Cheetahs coach Naka Drotské said.
