Cape Town - The Stormers will team up with PinkDrive to create awareness of Breast Cancer at the Vodacom Super Rugby clash against the Cheetahs at Newlands on Saturday.
PinkDrive, South Africa’s best-loved Breast Cancer Community Carer and NGO, is powering South Africa’s mobile Women’s Health Mammography and Gynaecology Units.
All PinkDrive units are housed in specially designed hi-tech trucks. The units travel to all areas around South Africa with the aim of enabling the medically uninsured access to women’s health services.
These services include free education on women’s health, free mammograms, free pap smears, free clinical examinations and education on how to do breast self-examinations. Men are also invited and encouraged to attend, as 1% of all breast cancers are now found in men.
To date, PinkDrive has done more than 9600 mammograms, conducted more than 92 000 clinical breast examinations and educated more than 222 000 people on breast health.
On Saturday, May 28 between 12:00 and 15:00, one of these trucks will be at the SAB Brewery fields adjacent to DHL Newlands, and 12 women over the age of 40 will be afforded free screenings valued at R600 each.
All women over the age of 40 may apply to use one of the 12 free screening slots by calling 021 697 5650, or sending an email to mammowp@pinkdrive.co.za. Those who take advantage of this offer will each also receive two tickets to the Stormers v Cheetahs Vodacom Super Rugby game at Newlands on the day.
The Stormers team will show their support by wearing pink armbands on their match jerseys.
President of the Western Province Rugby Football Union Thelo Wakefield said that the union is proud to team up with such an important initiative.
"We would like to play a role in promoting Cancer awareness, and what better way to do so than by teaming up with PinkDrive which does such important community work through their groundbreaking mobile units," he said.
PinkDrive CEO Noelene Kotschan said that it is heart-warming to see that through sport, awareness can be raised for PinkDrive’s cause.
“Thank you to the Stormers who are affording us the opportunity to drive our message that “Early Detection Saves Lives!” said Kotschan.
