Season over for Bulls fullback Gelant

Cape Town - The Bulls have received a blow with the news that fullback Warrick Gelant will be sidelined for the remainder of the year with a knee injury.

Gelant was earlier this year sidelined with a broken jaw which saw him miss several of their Super Rugby games.

He made his return to action for the Blue Bulls against the Leopards in the Currie Cup Qualifying tournament last month.

But the former Junior Springbok then suffered a knee injury and it was confirmed on Monday that he’ll be sidelined for the rest of the season.

“Warrick Gelant sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament - which was repaired two weeks ago. He is expected to make a return early next year,” Bulls team doctor Herman Rossouw said.

According to Rossouw, injured Springbok centre Jan Serfontein will be out for about three months.

“Jan Serfontein, as previously stated from the Springboks, has sustained a scaphoid fracture which was operated on. Luckily it seems like his recovery will be speedier than initially expected. He is expected to be back in 12 weeks’ time.

Rossouw also confirmed that lock RG Snyman picked up an ankle injury playing for South Africa ‘A’ against the England Saxons.

“Scans this morning revealed that he’s got a Grade 3 injury to his ankle and is only expected to make a return in four to six weeks’ time.”

Good news for the Bulls is that new loose forward recruit Jacques Potgieter could soon make a return to action.

“On our other list of injuries, we’ve got Jacques Potgieter, who came back from the Sharks. He is still making a recovery from a knee injury he sustained. It is expected for him to be back in two weeks’ time."

Rossouw also commented on the injury progress of Bok flyhalf Handre Pollard.

“On our long-term list we still have Handre Pollard, who is recovering from knee as well as shoulder surgery. He’s out for the rest of the year as we previously stated. He is expected to make his return early next year."

The Bulls' next Super Rugby outing is against the Jaguares in Argentina on July 2.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
