Kwagga on compassionate leave, Lions coach confirms

Cape Town - Lions coach Swys de Bruin has explained his decision to move Springbok Franco Mostert from lock to flank for Saturday’s Super Rugby encounter against the Bulls in Pretoria.

Mostert, who started at lock against the Jaguares, moves to the side of the scrum, with Cyle Brink moving to No 6, with Kwagga Smith not in the match-day sqaud.

Marvin Orie will start as Andries Ferreira’s lock partner.

“It’s one or two positional changes because Kwagga Smith is on compassionate leave this weekend so he is not available for selection,” De Bruin said after naming his team on Tuesday.

“We are playing Franco Mostert at (No) 7, playing Marvin Orie at lock and sticking with Andries (Ferreira) at (No) 4. We’ll bring Marnus (Schoeman) off the bench and move Cyle Brink to (No) 6 as well."

In the backline, Rohan Janse van Rensburg also replaces Harold Vorster at inside centre, with the latter dropping down to the bench.

Both Schoeman and Madosh Tambwe were named among the replacements, with Howard Mnisi and Hacjivah Dayimani dropping out of the squad.

Speaking ahead of the challenge at Loftus Versfeld, De Bruin said: “We are preparing well, we want to ask our supporters to join us there. We want to see our red and white (colours). It’s very good for our players if they see them there. We want to make a difference and play some attractive rugby there.”
