Jones on why he’s leaving Stormers

    2017-02-09 12:02

Cape Town - Scotland centre Huw Jones says it makes sense for him to have signed a deal with Glasgow Warriors.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Jones had signed a two-year deal with the Scottish club. He will leave WP Rugby after the conclusion of this year’s Currie Cup.

The 23-year-old made headlines for the Stormers in recent years - which caught the eye of the Scotland selectors who picked the Edinburgh-born player in their Test team last year.

He made his international debut against Japan and has since won four Test caps.

“It felt like the time was right to join Glasgow, having enjoyed my time in Cape Town playing Super Rugby. Obviously playing for Scotland, it makes a lot of sense to be playing in Scotland and I was ready to make the move,” Jones told the Glasgow Warriors’ official website.

“Glasgow are doing very well this year and look like they could continue to do well over the next couple of years and the chance to be part of a successful club was a big factor when I was making my decision.

“Playing professional rugby in the Northern Hemisphere for the first time will be a great challenge. The Guinness PRO12 looks like an exciting championship with lots of strong teams and the European Rugby Champions Cup is obviously a massive competition too and one I’m looking forward to competing in if Glasgow qualify.”

Jones says he has enjoyed being part of the Scotland setup.

“I really like working with Jason (O’Halloran) as a coach, we work well together at Scotland and obviously he has worked with Dave Rennie before. I’ve never worked with Dave but he’s been really successful with the Chiefs, so I’m really looking forward to working with world class coaches.

“I get on well with all the Glasgow boys having got to know them in Scotland camp and I spoke to them about the club and the city and they all had really good things to say.”

Meanwhile, Jones may not be the only Stormer heading to Glasgow later this year.

According to BBC Sport, prop Oli Kebble is set to sign a deal with the club.

He is expected to leave WP Rugby at the end of the South African season.

Kebble has seemingly been courted by Scottish Rugby, who have reportedly monitored the player for several years.

As he is not tied to the Springboks, Kebble could become eligible to represent Scotland after three years' residency.
