Fleck must make call on Zas

Cape Town - Stormers coach Robbie Fleck has a tricky little selection poser going into Saturday's Super Rugby clash against the Sharks at Newlands.

It comes at wing, where Kobus van Wyk returns to full fitness following the ankle injury that saw him leave the field in the 33-9 win against the Bulls in week one.

Van Wyk was replaced by 20-year-old Leolin Zas, who immediately displayed his devastating pace when he first got the ball against the Bulls.

Van Wyk was then ruled out of this past weekend's trip to Bloemfontein, and Zas again stepped up to the plate, scoring the opening try of the game as the Stormers secured a 20-10 win.

With Dillyn Leyds expected to hold down his place this weekend, Fleck must now decide whether to keep his faith with the exciting young Zas or return to Van Wyk.

It was hard to read between the lines, but Fleck's assessment of where Zas is right now may have given an indication of what his decision will be when the side is named on Thursday.

"If the team is performing on a consistent basis then selections are quite easy," said Fleck.

"I think it’s great that he (Zas) did do well (against the Cheetahs). He created a good opportunity for Jubbies (Juan de Jongh) there in the second half and he scored a good try.

"We would have liked to have got it to him a little bit more. I’m happy with him at the moment … he’s going well … he’s showing good maturity."

There is also the possibility of changes being made to the front row.

Oli Kebble, Bongi Mbonambi and Vincent Koch have started both matches so far this season but the pedigree on the bench is unmissable in the form of JC van Rensburg, Scarra Ntubeni and co-captain Frans Malherbe.

"Both front rows have done incredibly well. I think that Vince and Oli have done a good job in terms of setting the platform and should there be rotation you would expect the same from Frans and JC," said Fleck.

"It is tricky, but it is a long season. We’re in a situation with the props, we’re in a situation with the loose trio and now with the wings …there will be opportunities to rotate. As long as the squad understands it then I’m happy."

The Sharks have also won both of their matches this season, beating the Kings 43-8 in port Elizabeth before edging the Jaguares 19-15 in Durban.
