    Fisher back at the Brumbies

    2017-06-23 08:12

Cape Town - Laurie Fisher has signed a deal with the Brumbies that will see him take on a role as assistant coach for the 2018 Super Rugby season.

Fisher has a long association with the Brumbies, beginning in 2000 when he was appointed as the head coach of the Brumbies Academy.

He oversaw and guided the development and progression of young players like Matt Giteau, Guy Shepherdson and Julian Salvi through to the professional set-up while in this role.

Fisher said he was extremely excited to be returning to the Brumbies.

“I am very much looking forward to returning to the Brumbies in the role of assistant coach to Dan McKellar,” he said.

“The club has been a huge part of my rugby career and I am delighted to be able to come back home. It’s an exciting time to be part of the Brumbies set-up as we look to maintain our presence as the top Australian franchise.

“I am particularly looking forward to working with Dan who is a progressive and highly-rated up-and-coming coach.”

The man known as “Lord” took over as Brumbies head coach from 2005-2008 before returning in 2012 to work under Jake White.

In 2014 Fisher co-coached the Brumbies with current head coach Stephen Larkham, helping lead the team to a semi-final berth.

Fisher then moved on to Gloucester in the UK, taking over as head coach in a three-year reign before departing early this year.

Brumbies CEO Michael Thomson was thrilled to secure the services of such an experienced individual.

“Laurie has a remarkable coaching career under his belt and we are happy that he has decided to come back to the club in the assistant role,” Thomson commented.

“His wealth of rugby knowledge and experience will be a valuable asset to the club and I have no doubt that he will be a tremendous addition to the team.

“As a former Brumbies coach Laurie knows the area, the community and the culture of the club, which is very important to us. He has the Brumbies in his blood and we are excited that he is back as part of our coaching set-up.”
