Burger a doubt for Cheetahs clash

Cape Town - Schalk Burger is in a race against time to be fit for this Saturday's Super Rugby clash against the Cheetahs.

The Springbok veteran injured his ankle in Saturday's 17-13 loss to the Bulls at Loftus, and while he soldiered on and finished that match, he did not train on Monday.

The word out of the Stormers camp was that they would know more by the end of Tuesday, and that at this stage Burger's availability was touch and go.

"The medical team will have to work hard on his ankle to have him ready for the weekend," Stormers assistant coach Russell Winter said.

"I'm always optimistic and I'm hopeful that he'll be ready, but we will know more tomorrow."

The good news was that the decision to remove Eben Etzebeth at half time on Saturday was not ignited by a new injury.

"As you know Eben had come back from an injury so it was always going to be a medical call with him," said Winter, who added that it had always been part of the plan to give the Springbok lock 40 minutes.

There were no other injuries to report on after the Bulls game.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
