Bulls, Serfontein deny French move reports

Cape Town - The Bulls have rubbished a report that Springbok centre Jan Serfontein will leave South Africa to play in France.

French newspaper Midi Libre alleged that Serfontein has agreed to a three-year contract with Montpellier.

The report indicated that he would join the Top 14 club at the end of the season.

However, when contacted by the French publication, Montpellier denied the claim.

Xander Janse van Rensburg, the Bulls’ High Performance Manager, told supersport.com that Serfontein has a contract with the Bulls and SA Rugby until end of the year.

It is believed that SA Rugby is eager to keep the midfielder in South Africa through to the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

“Jan is contracted to us and therefore isn’t allowed to negotiate with any other team without our permission,” Janse van Rensburg said.

“Furthermore we are in discussions with him since November to renew his contract. SARU are also a party to the contract and we are waiting for them to finalise their portion of the negotiations.”

Tellingly, Serfontein, 23, said he knew nothing about negotiations.

Serfontein played 26 Tests for the Springboks between 2013 and 2015.

Due to a spate of injuries, Serfontein, the 2012 IRB Junior World Championship Player of the Tournament, has fallen behind the likes of Damian de Allende, Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Juan de Jongh in the Springbok midfield pecking order.
