Brumbies prop Alexander signs up for more

    2017-06-30 10:14

Canberra - The Brumbies have re-signed prop Ben Alexander for the 2018 Super Rugby season, the club legend agreeing to terms on a new one-year deal.

Alexander made his Brumbies debut in 2008 and has been with the club for the entirety of the last decade, becoming the club’s most capped player alongside Australian Rugby great George Smith.

The 32-year-old has amassed 142 caps during his time in the Nation’s Capital and will likely become the franchise’s all-time most capped player when he returns from injury in the coming weeks.

A prolific try scorer, evergreen powerhouse prop Alexander has scored a total of 105 points and 21 tries during his career with the Brumbies, an incredible strike rate for a front rower.

Alexander has 72 Wallabies caps to his name, the versatile front-rower was the Wallabies most capped prop until recently being overtaken by James Slipper.

Brumbies CEO Michael Thomson said the club was thrilled to have secured Alexander for 2018.

"Ben is an institution here at the Brumbies and we are delighted that he will continue to lead the playing group of the club," Thomson commented.

"Ben is set to become our most-capped Brumby of all time before the end of this season and brings great skill to the set-piece and in the loose.

"Ben is also proud to represent Canberra and the local community and is a Uni-Norths Owls player through-and-through. He is a terrific ambassador for the franchise and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience.

"With plenty of young talent coming through the ranks at the Brumbies having someone like Ben, who has been a huge part of the club since his debut in 2008, to help guide and mentor those players into the Brumby tradition and culture is crucial.

"We look forward to seeing Ben add many more caps to his already incredible tally."

Alexander meanwhile said it was an easy choice to stay with the Brumbies.

"I am thrilled to be able to sign for the Brumbies for another year," he said. "The Brumbies have been a major part of my life and I am looking forward to the challenges that lay ahead.

"I am proud to have represented the club and it’s something I want to continue to do for a while yet. I have enjoyed many special years with the club and have enjoyed playing with some top-quality players whilst here in Canberra.

"Our current group has plenty of potential to achieve great things and I am delighted that I will be able to help the club achieve our goals.

"I see exciting times to come for the club and am positive about where we are heading. The promotion of Dan McKellar to Head Coach and the return of Laurie Fisher points to a great year ahead."
