Welcome boost for Sharks

2012-07-30 06:26

Durban - The Sharks were handed a major double boost on Sunday after backline pair Patrick Lambie and Paul Jordaan both made sufficient progress in their recovery and were named in a 24-man squad for the Super Rugby final.

The Durbanites face the Chiefs in the final in Hamilton on Saturday.

Springbok back Lambie and junior Bok centre Jordaan missed the 26-19 semi-final win over the Stormers in Cape Town at the weekend after failing late fitness tests.

Lambie was also absent from their playoff victory over the Reds in Brisbane the week before when he failed to make the trip to Australia after aggravating an ankle injury against the Cheetahs in the final match of the conference stage.

Jordaan played against the Queenslanders, but hobbled off with a hamstring problem.

Their availability will be a massive boost for coach John Plumtree, who reported no fresh injury concerns following their battling victory at Newlands.

The squad, made up of 11 backline and 13 forward players, will spend a few days in Sydney, before continuing on their journey to Hamilton on Thursday.

“There were a lot of really tired bodies in there but this group has gathered belief in the last seven or eight weeks and we’re just following through right now, which is great,” Plumtree said.

Sharks touring squad: Meyer Bosman, Paul Jordaan, Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod, Frederic Michalak, Lwazi Mvovo, JP Pietersen, Louis Ludik, Odwa Ndungane, Riaan Viljoen, Tim Whitehead, Willem Alberts, Anton Bresler, Jacques Botes, Craig Burden, Jean Deysel, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Marcell Coetzee, Keegan Daniel (captain), Wiehahn Herbst, Ryan Kankowski, Tendai Mtawarira, Steven Sykes.

Go Sharks Go - Please do what all the other sides in this country could not do - show BMT and win the cup. You guys deserve the cup coming from 6th place on the log, travelling and still you silenced the whole of South Africa when you totally outplayed a one dimensional Stormers outfit. It is clear the Sharks deserve to be called South Africa's best - to hell with who won the conference cup because they failed. We are all behind you guys - Go show the Kiwi's how it's done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morning All Firstly big Congrats to the Sharks for beating us and reaching the final.Good luck in the final will support you all the way. To my beloved Stormers, you just did not turn up on the day but still an amazing achievement to reach the semis with all the injuries that we have had.I will still continue to support you through thick and thin. Stormers for life

      brandon.styles.14 - 2012-07-30 07:13

The stormers made to many mistakes in the sharks 22, that cost them the game, Hahahahahahah stupid tosser. Stormers suck, 11 years no cups, 12 years now and counting, Bhahahahhaa.

      nicnac.nac - 2012-07-30 08:04

It must hurt when you know you have given it your absolute best through out the season, believing, just to be left devastatingly crushed and disappointed. Good! With an all out defensive strategy and the weekest attack in the comp the stormers were always just going to be a good side, never a champion side.

      cape.maori - 2012-07-30 08:30

hahahahahhaha - groot bekke voor die tyd!!!

      derrick.pentz.5 - 2012-07-30 09:22

@Lionel- you are a credit to your team & rugby- humility in defeat is far better than crowing in victory- there should be more of you

      lionel.kemm.9 - 2012-07-30 09:25

Raven,I have no idea what went wrong with Grant but he had a shocker. Butter fingers could have been put down to nerves but I dont think so,no excuses Sharks deserved their victory. Maestro, from the start of the season I said that we needed a tighthead but Alister had faith in Brok and co but Saturday they were found wanting. Still my team though

  • brandon.styles.14 - 2012-07-30 07:14

Go Sharks, Make South Africa and the stormer supporters proud.

  • boereroo.jackman - 2012-07-30 07:48

Sharks have a good chance if they take every opportunity to score and not do what Meyer Bosman did - stop to tie his shoe laces together two metres before the open try line. If they can pressure Aaron Cruden into mistakes they may be able to stop their attack.

  • nigel.vanysendyk - 2012-07-30 07:57

Well played Sharks, as a Stormers supporter, you were the better team on Saturday, we will all be supporting you come Satruday, you can do it, we are 1000% behind you.

      Ken - 2012-07-30 08:22

Well said mate, as a Sharks supporter we have to be behind them, every South African. There is no need to read peoples nasty comments. I just skip them because some people just get carried away.

Heard Whitehead is out with a broken hand

      tim.kilpin - 2012-07-30 08:47

Unlikely as he is in the touring squad. The Sharks would not have travelled with a passenger

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-07-30 08:53

@Nathan. He did and is out for the final. Jordaan is back and that is a big plus!

      nathan.davies.1257 - 2012-07-30 09:06

Who to play at inside then? Bosman? Viljoen?

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-07-30 09:09

That is a good question, but I am sure Plum will come up with something. I see Whitehead is in the touring squad, but it was also confirmed on radio and the Sharks website that he is out.

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-07-30 10:28

That's a big loss, really bad timing. Jordaan is a no brainer at 13 and even though Lambie, Pietersen and perhaps even Ludik or Viljoen can play at 12, the best bet must be Bosman to start. Moving others away from their best positions will hurt us. My backline will be 9 - McLeod; 10 - Freddie; 11 - JP; 12 - Bosman; 13 - Jordaan; 14 - Mvovo; 15 - Ludik. Sorry but Lambie may take a few minutes to get up to speed, so I'd have him on the bench. He'll slot in well towards the end and if we have the lead, his tactical boot will serve us well. Go Sharks!!

  • danny.cohen.315 - 2012-07-30 08:35

WELL DONE my SHARKIES!!!!!!!!! Go make us proud, you showed us that you can DO it !!!!~~~~~~~~~~

  • sarel.hanekom.1 - 2012-07-30 08:49

The Sharks really showed on Saturday what they are made of... Boys, play the same way coming Saturday agianst the Chiefs like you did the last two games, AND YOU WILL BRING BACK THE CUP AND ENJOY THE SPOILS!!! GO SHARKS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      deon.fouche.3 - 2012-07-30 09:13

Sarel, stadig nou! Ons almal HOOP so, maar moet nou nie soos baie mense klink en sê dit sal gebeur nie. Ons het begin moeg lyk in die laaste 5-10 minute en dit is n lang vlug via Aus, soos ons manne vlieg.

  • tim.kilpin - 2012-07-30 08:50

Stormers own press physed them out of the game as they built them op so much that they thought all they had to do was pitch up and run on the field to win but got caught out by a highly motivated Sharks side

  • hespach - 2012-07-30 09:05

I've seen on another site that Tim Whitehead is out with a broken hand??????

      DiversitySa - 2012-07-30 09:23

You are absolutely correct. How unfortunate. I would assume Lambie and Jordaan will play in the midfield with Freddy playing 10 and JP moving back to the wing. Still a good back line, but these guys have not played together much. Go Sharks! (from a Bulls supporter)

  • BoyvandieSuburbs - 2012-07-30 09:18

Tim Whitehead is not in the squad, and didn't go to NZ either, as his hand is broken.

  • margaretha.freyer - 2012-07-30 09:26

i am so proud of my team!!for not giving up and staying focused all the way.i don't believe any team would make finals and not give it their best.i have trust and faith you will be the better team on Saturday.

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2012-07-30 09:37

The Sharks did well as at the half way stage they were no where. Stormers should get an attcking coach now and the forwards should be winning the ball not playing wing or centres.

  • mack.myburgh - 2012-07-30 12:00

I would like to apologise........I thought the Stormers would win it............Congratulations SHARKS !
