WP make offer for Brüssow

2011-07-07 14:00

Brenden Nel - SuperSport

Johannesburg - The Free State Cheetahs are facing a massive fight to keep their Springbok fetcher Heinrich Brüssow in Bloemfontein after it emerged that Western Province have made a massive offer for him.

Brüssow is widely regarded as one of the best fetchers in the world, and is a shoo-in for the World Cup squad, but his contract with the Cheetahs ends at the end of this season and he has become a major target for other sides.

Western Province have, according to SuperSport.com’s sources, made an offer between R2.5 million and R3 million for the flanker per year to get him to make the move across to Cape Town.

But the Cheetahs are fighting fire with fire, with a consortium of businessmen apparently trying to sway Brüssow with a decent offer to stay, working along with the Cheetahs in their negotiations with the flanker.

There is also interest from other teams, both in South Africa and abroad for Brüssow’s services.

Western Province’s offer was set to expire this week, but it is not known if Brüssow has made up his mind whether to stay or accept the offer.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske told SuperSport.com that he was hoping to keep Brüssow, but could not make any further comment at this stage.

“We have made an offer to him, and we haven’t heard back yet, so at this stage this is all I know,” Drotske told SuperSport.com, “Of course we would want to keep him, he is a world class player and we want him to remain in Bloemfontein.”

This is the second Cheetahs player that has been targeted by Western Province, who look set to go on a spending spree to try and bolster their ranks for next year’s Super 15 competition.

Cheetahs fullback/wing Riaan Viljoen has also been linked with a move to Cape Town, after reports about private negotiations between him and Western Province Director of coaching Rassie Erasmus.

Brüssow was not named amongst the 21 injured players injured for the Castle Tri Nations series which starts later this month, with indications that he may play a role before the World Cup starts in the Springbok plans.

The flanker has not enjoyed the best of seasons, and was injured three times in the Vodacom Super Rugby series this year.

Would be a massive signing as long he stays injurie free and considering Louws move to Bath. However after the Crusaders game the main concern should improve our light five.

      GILLBERT - 2011-07-07 14:47

      GHT - 2011-07-07 14:52

@ Gillbert. The massive amount of young guys that got a run for The Stormers during the Super 15 would disagree with you. We blooded way more youngsters this season than any other union. End of story.

      GILLBERT - 2011-07-07 14:58

and that was only cause of injury... that doesnt make them special every 2 weeks you read about the stormers looking for players outside their union.... would you rather play or be in the squad and hope and pray the person your team paid 3 mil rand for gets injured so you can have a chance to play and proof your worth... good luck with that cause as soon as you hit 25 your to old and no body knows who you are

      watalife - 2011-07-07 15:04

Not a good move at all, he is forever injured and way overrated. Why on gods earth would they want this oke when they have enough young talent? For the life of me they should stop this now and focus on what they have already.

      GILLBERT - 2011-07-07 15:06

      Paul - 2011-07-07 15:17

Bugger Off WP !!!! How about developing your own players .... you guys rob the other teams of good players and turn them into a bunch of LOSERS ...useless KAAPIES !!!

      watalife - 2011-07-07 15:19

I will never support such stupid actions taken by my beloved WP and sure as hell this will still have serious after shocks by the joung players. Bugger them......

      Bill - 2011-07-07 15:43

Wonder hoeveel Sharks is in Natal gebore?

      JohnnyBB - 2011-07-07 16:39

....Stormbarians....!! .......experts in poaching players...!!!! ....if they cant win any cups, they will buy players until they win some cups...!!... ....10 year losers....!!! ............he he he he he he he ...!!!

      MrSpiderman - 2011-07-07 17:31

      Cause: "We have da money!!!!!"

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-07-07 18:15

WP youngsters are poached on a massive scale....ask the Bull's!

      GraemeBB - 2011-07-07 22:50

We cant blame unions going out to buy - as long as it is locals, I am happy. If the Stormers buy this man, that would be massive. And dont be surprised to see the deal closed. Living in the Cape is a huge perc! Come Bulls, buy us a few new players : -)

      Bill - 2011-07-08 00:25

Net 15% is regte Blou Bulle. Niemand kla nie, dis hoe profesionele sport werk!

      GILLBERT - 2011-07-08 08:45

      Bill - 2011-07-08 09:14

Guthro Steenkamp - Vrystaat en Bokke, Jaco Pretorius - Lions, Victor Matfield - Griquas, Bjorn Basson - Griquas en Bokke, Bryan Habana - Lions, Jaco vd Westhuizen ------- kan ek nou stop?????

      Damian@bulls - 2011-07-08 09:55

It happens every year. The suites go out with fat cheque books and buy wings, flanks every thing we dont need. And then they tell us we dont need a front row because what we got is good enough. Hullo!

      Bill - 2011-07-08 13:26

      CliffB - 2011-07-10 07:58

Paul : You say useless" KAPIES" rather look across the muddy little Jukskei at the way Bulls sign WP younsters - It is a Pro era !!!

      CliffB - 2011-07-10 07:59

JohnnyBB -Like I said - Check across the muddy little Jukskei to the BULLBARIANS !!!

      Paddy - 2011-07-12 03:47

Tos man st agent weet niks hiervan nie.Net nog n simpel raaiskoot vd pers.

  • Hanjo - 2011-07-07 14:09

A more than able replacement for Francois Louw...Brilliant initiative by WP. Brussow is world class, and a loose trio of Burger , Brussow and Vermeulen would be very dangerous.

      Martin - 2011-07-07 14:49

F#$@ INITIATIVE, IT IS BLATANT LAZINESS NOT TO DEVELOP YOUR OWN!!!!!!!!!

      Hanjo - 2011-07-07 15:07

With two brilliant young flankers at the Junior WC this year, from WP, I beg to differ, but you need more than just a team, when CC time comes, we might lose three loosies on Bok duty , then those young guys will get their opportunity, also, think about it, if we get a single injury to our first choice loosie, we needed to call up Brits, so arguably having a bit of depth isn't a bad thing.

      StaalBurgher - 2011-07-07 16:11

@Martin, unfortunately you don't just "develop" a player like Brussow at whim. They are rare. Either WP get lucky and unearth a rare gem locally or they buy one. More that likely no matter how much you develop locally you will get, at best, an above average fetcher-flank. Perhaps WP do have their eyes on some youngster, but they might still be very young.

      JohnnyBB - 2011-07-07 16:45

....Heinrich Brussow, ....dont make the same mistake as Bryan Banana....!! .......his rugby went from bad to worse at the Stormers....!!

      Oukoos - 2011-07-07 20:30

@JOHNNYBB, jy is dom. Sê agter my aan: "JohnnyBB is dom".

      Niekie - 2011-07-08 06:41

Oukoos jou drol! Hoe kan die Stormers 2de eindig as 2 spanne more in die finaal speel? Dan eindig hulle mos 3de of 4de??!!! (as daar 'n uitspeel wedstryd om 3de plek sou wees)

      GraemeBB - 2011-07-08 10:51

@Oukoos - Stormers were finalists in 2010, and couldnt make it this year - on the way up yoiu say?

      CliffB - 2011-07-10 08:01

GraemeBB : Come now , the Bulls were Champs in 2010 , could not even make the playoffs !!

  • SuperCooper - 2011-07-07 14:10

Nice work Rassie. Heinrichs brilliant at the breakdown. we lacked that style of rugby against the saders

      Niekie - 2011-07-08 06:42

SuperCooper, what the stormers lacked is a tight five!

  • thinus.rautenbach - 2011-07-07 14:16

    Buy a front row Rassie...!!!

      DeonL - 2011-07-07 14:46

They do need a few front rowers. Imagine if last Saturdays game was played on a dry field.

      JohnnyBB - 2011-07-07 16:41

..yes, ...the Stormbarians tight five are useless..!!!

      GraemeBB - 2011-07-07 22:53

2 poor props = thight 5 weak = poor scrumming. The rest of the scrum is good players.

      Gazza69 - 2011-07-08 08:25

Johnny BB ...its the professional era, which team worldwide doesn't buy players from other provinces or countries??? The biggest cheque book wins every time. These players have a limited time span to make money so who can blame them? Wouldn't you leave your current employ for more money elsewhere?? C'mon....

  • Forxx - 2011-07-07 14:21

NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! Wish I personally could pay him to stay in the Free State! Please Heinrich stay with us!! Reading news like this makes me want to cry...

  • cocopops - 2011-07-07 14:23

This morning at the Bok training session in Cape Town I saw him chatting to some WP bigwig, thought nothing of it until I read this article. Yeh, R250000.00 per month, not bad at all.

  • windkind - 2011-07-07 14:24

Spending money in the wrong areas. As long as you sit with props who can't scrum, you will never win a Super rugby title. There's loads of depth at loose forward in the Cape. Rather spend money so you can get rid of a fairy like Brock Harris.

  • Hendrik - 2011-07-07 14:24

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! *sob* dammit, I think I would also have left for that offer. But my heart is very sore.......we (Freestate) will miss you

  • Kapnschtaten - 2011-07-07 14:24

Would be an unbelievable asset for WP, but a very sad move for the Cheetas who have been playing fantastic rugby. With that said and correct me if I am wrong, but to me it seems quite a few of the Cheetas injuries seem like conditioning related injuries, achilies, hammy's ect ??? Just an observation as a number of the players look out of shape as well compaired to say the Sharks...But they are by far the most exciting team to watch in SA rugby at moment, Johnson, Strauss and many others are a pleasure to watch, all 15 players on the field look like they are there to play rugby. What ever happens, best of luck to them.

  • Jerry - 2011-07-07 14:26

  • Morne - 2011-07-07 14:30

Man if only the Cheetahs had the funds that the rest have. We keep on producing the players, but the bugger clubs keep on throwing the bucks. The way things go the Cheetahs will never be a superior side ever.

      GHT - 2011-07-07 14:56

Ask yourself why don't you have the funds. I say bad long fingered management.

      Totman - 2011-07-07 16:33

GHT. They are in a catch 22 for a long time. With no big money hardly any good players will stay. With no good player no big games get won. With no big matches won no big money. The truth is they develop very good players and should have a some sort of law for 5 or more years to get them out of this never ending story. However, the other unions knows it and will always veto a law like that as well as they are afraid the FS will than slow down with their fast constant developments. We also know that 3 unions, on the current system, will always have the benefit of the choice if you get to a equal good player from other provinces outside the trio. Old excuses get used that the chosen one knows most of his new tame mates!!!

  • Devon - 2011-07-07 14:30

Where are all the people who always accuse the Sharks of stealing everyone's players now??? Small minded gits...Rugby's a professional sport and any player should play where his career is best served!!! Good luck Heinrich!!!

      Craig - 2011-07-07 14:48

Oh please smittie. Do you think every blue bull comes from that part of the country. Do think every Shark comes from KZN. Seriously, have a look and you will see most teams dont have many players that come from that area. So dont throw your toys out the cot just because its the Stormers

      Durasmart - 2011-07-07 15:43

@Craig. There is huge difference in buying a kid just out of school or from the u/20 ranks and buying a player who is already a Springbok.

      Craig - 2011-07-07 16:22

@Durasmart: Smittie's comment is about making quality players, which to me means from their day one of playing rugby. Thus the fact that all i have done is shown that all teams buy players from other areas, and seldom ones the have been born, bread and learnt to play in that area.

  • Martin - 2011-07-07 14:45

I'm a Cheetah supporter who moved to CT for employment, so I won't point fingers, but spare a thought for the many local young flankers who have been loyal to the WPRFU and now might have to compete with Heinrich for a place in their provincial set up. Surely it's time to consider a cap on these offers so that it's not only about the money ?

  • Gavin - 2011-07-07 15:07

WP/Stormers Rugby Union............use your own players from your local universities and clubs and leave the players from the other provinces alone. You are buggering their rugby careers up, playing for a team that can't win anything in any case. By the way to all the rugby fans...........that 3 story construction in the corner of Loftus is not a new grand stand addition........it's a trophy cabinet.

  • JdP - 2011-07-07 15:13

Luckily the FS keep on producing talent to support the useless development structures in the rest of the country.... I would be buying as well after that schoolboy performance in the semi-final. No big surprise that the only province that could handle the Crusaders was the Free State. They play a brand of rugby that can compete with the Crusaders....

      rugby_guru - 2011-07-08 10:17

But cant compete with the rest of the nation?

  • JdP - 2011-07-07 15:17

Luckily the Cheetahs keep on producing talent to support the rest of the useless development structures in the other provinces.... I would also be buying after such a schoolboy performance in the semis. No coincidence that the only team that could handle the Crusaders was the Cheetahs as they play a brand of rugby that can trouble the Crusaders ie an attacking game not the crap that the rest of the SA teams dish up.

  • Mike@CapeT - 2011-07-07 15:21

But according to Oukoos/Mike@CapeT/WPBLIKSEM/GOOINAT/CLIFFIE/WATALIFE and a few other brain surgeons on here WP/STORMERS don't buy players from other unions, only the Bulls do!!!!!!!

      Gavin - 2011-07-07 15:33

Your right Mike, but all teams buy players......the Bulls just buy the correct options to produce the winning team.......... most of the time.

This is what happens when your stadiums for the S15 are almost full all year round and your team has a home semi, you can afford to splash out on players!!!!!!On a serious note,I am in doubt about this, means that Koster and Pieter Louw will take a back seat again.

  • TylerDurton - 2011-07-07 15:35

Its a professional sport guys. The Stormers are saying goodbye to a world-class fetcher in Francois Louw and therefor need to replace him. It's simple. Brussouw is most welcome! Now we need props. Coenie? Greyling? Cha-ching!!! MWAAAHAHAHAAA!!!

  • shawn.w.chaney - 2011-07-07 15:40

  • TrippiZee - 2011-07-07 15:40

They can buy all the players they want, they will still choke when it matters, and the trophy cabinet will remain a vacuum. I think they should change their name to the Cape Proteas, haha

  • Gavin - 2011-07-07 15:43

@ Craig- LOL...The Bulls never poached any players in the past. The players they have all applied to play for the Bulls.

  • Jacques - 2011-07-07 16:04

All of you complain about how WP snatches up players around the country and from other unions. All of you are either blind or suffer from Short term Memory Loss. What about the Flou Nulle? Basson... the Wing... Griquas? Rings any bells? Sharks... the number of players they have snatched from other unions? You all must remember, Rugby/Sport these days are all about sponsors and what they get out of the deal. The bottom line comes in. It is business and not sport anymore. Look at the Lions. Except for 1-2 good players, they have nothing to speak of. They have no money. Snowball Effect.

      Fokken natgegooi

  • Jacques - 2011-07-07 16:23

[sigh] Most of you are either supporting your own unions blindly or suffer from memory loss. Remember, Sports these days are all about money/endorsements/sponsors and not for the enjoyment of the sport. If you had a team with no well known players, do you think there will be sponsors knocking on your door? The Blou Bulle (Griquas's Basson), Sharks etc have done this and no-one even said a word. Come on... get real and realistic! As for developing new talent... You have to take your hats off to the Cheetas as they are the only union who have consistantly groomed brilliant players. Sadly these players have been bought over by other unions, but sadly this is business and forces players to enter into contracts with definate end dates. Just think about all the reasons why the players and unions do that? movement, development, self-enrichment... I wish for the days where there were no politics/money in sport... Doc Craven's warning if I remember correctly predicted that the sport goes down the drain and becomes a job when money / politics enters the arena. it is kinda ringing true these days. As a ardent WP Supporter, I say, let the unions/players do as they wish. there is nothing we as supporters can do to stop it anyway.

I recall reading an article earlier this week where Rassie was quoted, saying that the Stormers will not be looking for any big signings because of all the "young talent" in the union. Hope it works out as well as the in case of Habana.

  • Stompies - 2011-07-07 16:43

  • Whoosa - 2011-07-07 16:44

It was a miracle to me that he stayed at the cheetahs for so long. Cant blame a player in this era if he moves for some cash. Just 2 things - lets hope for the sake of SA rugby that he gets fit and stays fit, i reckon this might be a risky buy, considering his constant struggle with injurys. Secondly, why do province go and splash 3 mil bucks on a loose forward, i mean isnt the cape the multitalented gene pool for loose forwards in SA? What about the wunderkint Nick CostUS, Flouw, Koliswa, Muyburg, Pieter Louw, Vermeulen Paul Roos 1st xv, Boys High etc?? I mean there is constant bragging on this site about the depth in the cape? Why not go and spent some big bucks buying players to beef up the light 5? O ja but i forgot, Kitzhof is a bok in the making..... No need for that.

  • Rudi - 2011-07-07 16:59

We dont need more loose forwards!!!!!, WE NEED A WHOLE NEW FRONT ROW, AND A NEW COACH!!!!!!

  • Rudi - 2011-07-07 17:01

WHE DONT NEED MORE LOOSE FORWARDS!!!!!! WE NEED A WHOLE NEW FRONT ROW AND A NEW COACH!

  • albertvds - 2011-07-07 17:03

Heinrich. . .

  • MrSpiderman - 2011-07-07 17:15

@JohnnyBB: At "least" we have the money!!! Hehehehehe!

  • Mac - 2011-07-07 17:16

Stormers won the SA Conference of Super 15 and last years Currie Cup finalist. So all you anti- stormer and anti- WP clowns, get a life. Jealousy? Relying only on local talent is amateurish and is a lot of hogwash! If you do that, you end up playing in the B section. In the modern game, it is all about winning and having the best players at your disposable. Ask Chelsea and Manchester City!

  • Cadder - 2011-07-07 18:02

@wpfan: I have to agree with you. The problem is not the loosies - we need a better front row at least, and in total, a better tight five.

  • Hayden - 2011-07-07 19:53

Service announcement from Multichoice: All "Stormers" games will no longer be shown on Supersport channels as Supersport is the Channel of Champions. “Blue Bull” games will be moved to the History Channel. All Sharks games can be viewed on Cartoon network. Cheetah games will be a specialty show on Animal Planet, since they are almost extinct.

  • Kevan - 2011-07-07 19:59

question, since rugby turned professional has it only being the Sharks that have bought players and only now the other teams are starting. definitely not. Where is Habana, Pieter grant , Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Potgieter, morne steyn, Duane Vermeulan etc from. Answer please.

  • Tiger - 2011-07-07 20:27

@Mike@CapeT En jou ma was 'n man jou etter...

  • StBad - 2011-07-07 20:46

The exodus of world class players that leave the FS breading ground will never change, maybe if SA Rugby acknowledge this and pump serious money into the province the process might become sustainable and there'll be enough stars to go around?

  • Ruperdo - 2011-07-07 20:55

KOM BOETA ONS HE JOU............... NODIG................................................................................ DAAR IN DIE KAAP.....

  • Andre - 2011-07-07 23:09

  • Niekie - 2011-07-08 06:37

Ha ha ha! What a joke! Just another good player to move there and then become a big dud! The Crusaders murdered the stormers last week because the stormer tight five is weak and useless! Now they buy another loose forward????????? STUPID IS WHAT STUPID DOES! Ha ha ha ha!
