    Tough week for Sharks mentor

    2015-03-27 10:03

Cape Town - Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold says it was a challenging week trying to prepare his team for a Super Rugby clash with the Western Force.

Centre Frans Steyn was cited after being sent off against the Chiefs last week. He was found not guilty at a subsequent hearing, with the red card expunged from his record.

However, SANZAR felt justice was not served and appealed the decision, with the appeal originally set for Friday.

This meant the Sharks were unsure if they could pick Steyn in their starting line-up for this Saturday's clash in Durban, but Gold made the decision to include Steyn at flyhalf.

Luckily for the Sharks, the appeal against Steyn's verdict was postponed until next Tuesday, which means he is available to face the Force.

"We didn't have time to ponder whether or not to include him. We decided to pick him. And we let Fred Zeilinga and Lionel Cronje also train in case of a hiccup," Gold told Netwerk24.

Aside from the Steyn saga, skipper Bismarck du Plessis was also banned for four weeks and the Sharks had to rest Springbok trio Pat Lambie, Cobus Reinach and Marcell Coetzee.

"This week was definitely one of the more challenging one's of my coaching career. But I'm not worried about the impact all the disruptions could have on the players. We have an excellent group that know exactly what is expected of them," continued Gold.

Saturday's clash at Kings Park kicks off at 17:05.
