Stormers scrum worries ex-Bok

2012-02-15 22:26

Cape Town - Former Springbok prop Robbie Kempson is worried that the Stormers' front row doesn't instil enough fear into opponents ahead of the Super Rugby tournament.

Kempson is the current forwards coach at the Southern Kings and despite his team's 38-13 loss to the Stormers over the weekend, he fears for his former team come scrum time.

"It is for me, as a fan of the Stormers, a worry. We knew before Saturday's match that we could target the Stormers' front row," Kempson told Die Burger.

Despite the Stormers winning comfortably against the Kings, the one area in which they struggled was in the scrums.

The Stormers complained that the referee's engagement (crouch, touch, pause, engage) orders at the scrums were different that what teams are used to.

And while Kempson acknowledged this fact he still believes the Capetonians should have handled the situation better.

"It didn't help that there was about 10 seconds between 'pause' and 'engage', but the front rows adapted.

"At times the Stormers got good engagements but your opponents can make up for that if you don't follow through well with your engagement."

Kempson, who played 36 games for the Stormers, believes Deon Carstens, Tiaan Liebenberg and Frans Malherbe should make up their front row in Super Rugby.

"Steven Kitshoff (loosehead prop) has a tendency to try and walk around the tighthead. He's still young, but it makes his opponents' task easier.

"Look, the Stormers don't have a front row that really instils fear. They do have an unbelievable backline and the goal should probably be to get the ball wide as soon as possible."

Kempson reckons the Western Province union has made a mistake over the last decade by not trying to find a top class prop.

"Duane Vermeulen (loose forward) was a good acquisition for the pack, but WP has never contracted a world class prop.

"I don't think they'll be able to launch attacks from their scrums this year. However, it (their scrum) shouldn’t disintegrate if I take into account the way the referees are currently applying the laws."

Hoekom worry hy nou? Hulle is nog al die jare hopeloos.

      Francois - 2012-02-15 22:40

I think we gonna be in for a tough time in the scrums, hope I'm wrong!!!! Proudfoot should have picked up Kitzhoffs problem not Kempson!!!!

      Marcell - 2012-02-16 08:34

      Gustav - 2012-02-16 09:45

      Hugh - 2012-02-16 11:31

This article opens the WP open to abuse. Not scary enough? Maybe some spooky face paint? or less manicures at the parlour?

  • Jason - 2012-02-16 05:15

Thats just great. We have the bulls that only play with the first 10 and now we have our ex prop saying we only play with the back 5. i know we are going to win but why do we have to make it so difficult?

      @Jaco Vintage.....spot on

Ruan was SA skole speler.

There is some validity in what Kempson says. Although our props are good they are at this stage not world class. We are developing our young props but we are missing something for this season. I believe that our current Props will develop into what we need but over the next two or three seasons.

      Mielie - 2012-02-16 08:09

Klierkoppe.

      Mielie - 2012-02-16 09:42

  • derrick.dawson - 2012-02-16 08:51

I am a big stormers fan, but this problem has been evident for years. We have got the softest front row in the competition

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-16 09:31

... and yet we won the conference last season. Too much power in the front row is maybe a bit overrated if not accompanied by other rugby skills (a.k.a. domkrag).

      Mielie - 2012-02-16 09:44

...and yet you haven't won a Super in 19 seasons, a Voda in 14 seasons and a Currie in 11 seasons

      Mielie - 2012-02-16 09:45

...and yet you lost a home super semi and a currie semi against a lowly Lions team

      Mielie - 2012-02-16 09:47

...and yet you never played rugby otherwise you wouldn't have made such a moronic statement about the front row

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-16 09:49

...and yet Mielie is living proof that even the intellectually challenged can use a computer.

      Mielie - 2012-02-16 09:49

....and yet the conference trophy was brought in by John O Neill from the Aussies to at least guarantee the Aussies some sort of cup ironic that they then won the real cup unlike the Stormers in a tea cup. Vang jy Shistirrer a Stormers in a tea cup gie gie gie gie gie geeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

      Shistirrer - 2012-02-16 13:04

Oh, very cute guys, my last comment had you pwned, so you report it. Well, that's one way of getting rid of the truth that hurts :-)

      David - 2012-02-16 13:20

@ Mielie pip You guys are just bitter because the Bulls lost half there supporter base back to the Lions..... Stats show there has been a decrease in the sale of Bulls merchandise, and an increase in Lions merchandise.

      David - 2012-02-16 13:22

      @Mielie...so where did u play rugby ?

      quinton.grobler - 2012-02-16 13:40

@Dawid..oh sorry, DaVid. All Bull supporters are fully stocked on Bulls merchandise and therefore it is quite logical that the merchandise sales as a whole will decrease. Considering that the fence hopping Lion supporters now all of a sudden have to sell of their Bulls merchandise to be seen in proper Lions merchandise again, the sales picking up on their merchandise also makes sense. PS: "losing" a supporter back to the Lions is no loss at all.

      David - 2012-02-16 13:47

@Quinton... And i thought u were intelligent. When we playing golf ?

      Sean - 2012-02-16 23:42

@Shistirrer - Searioulsy , you stormers supporters make me laugh ! The conference cup !! LOL !! The last time you guys won a proper cup , was when Jan van Riebeeck was your main supporter !!

  • Dustin - 2012-02-16 09:41

Must be worrying for Stormers fans when the opposition coach points out technical flaws that their own highly overpaid and overrated forward's coach missed. But I believe S Kitshoff has a bright future ahead of him but he'll probably have to learn his trade at a different union. Stormers coaches and management still long for the good ol' running rugby day's of the 80's and although they were very successful in that era people tend to forget that they had one of the most feared pack of forwards in those days. YOU CAN'T PLAY RUNNING RUGBY IF YOU ARE ALWAYS ON THE BACKFOOT. Seeing as Alister C played all his rugby at scrumhalf he more than anyone else should know this. WP rugby probably cannot wait for the day when scrums and line-outs are removed from the game and they can then field 15 small, nippy & overrated backs which they have an abundance of.

      Shaun Robinson - 2012-02-16 10:32

@Dustin - You know rugby is played with an oval ball right???

      David - 2012-02-16 13:26

@Dustin....well the Bulls seem happy with our so called overated backs...They just purchased 2. Not forgetting Hougaard and Dippenaar. As for the point you made regarding frontfoot ball, thats a valid and known fact. But scrum time isnt what it use to be in the game, and thats a known fact to.

      Dustin - 2012-02-16 14:26

@ David - I wouldn't exactly refer to either JJ Engelbrecht (1.90m/95kg) or J Sadie (1.87m/93kg) as small. Neither Hougaard or Dippenaar was ever in the plans of WP rugby which is made even more evident by the fact that neither of the two even made it into the U18 WP Craven Week side. "There was a time when the set piece had been lost from the New Zealand game and maybe it is still lost to the Australians. But John Mitchell, after his time with Clive Woodward, brought the philosophy back to New Zealand. Graham Henry, Steve Hansen and Wayne Smith, other northern travellers, continued the missionary work. The mana of the scrummage is a big part of the All Blacks again. It should be a big part of any rugby team." - Brendon Ratcliffe. Apart from creating a solid platform to attack from it is basically the one opportunity for a pack of forwards to physically impose themselves on the opposing pack. Ask any scrumhalf or backline player for that matter, how big an impact it has on them when their pack is going backwards at scrum time. Just imagine if the Stormers had a strong scrummage, very few teams would then have been able to compete with or even beat them.

  • Gustav - 2012-02-16 09:55

mmmmm almal is baie slim.

      Eduard - 2012-02-16 10:22

Super rugby vs Currie beker mielie-meel - daar natuurlik is jou leeus se "track record" juis so tops die laaste ruk!

      Andre - 2012-02-16 12:54

      Sean - 2012-02-16 23:53

@Gustav - Conference cup - Please stop joking !! lol ! It`s called the Mickey Mouse Cup !! FFS , I can not believe the stormers supporters brag about that sh@t , shame !!

  • Gary Hendrickse - 2012-02-16 10:14

2/3 yrs ago Blaauw/ Harris scrummed all comers. Next year they were outscrummed, culminating in debacle vs Crusaders. We have great young props in Kitshoff, Malherbe, Kritsinger and where are giant young Smith brothers? Lets get Kempson, Cobus Visagie or Pieter de. Villiers ( the French guy from Tulbagh) to coach then. Not just about props, its about whole pack. When blaauw/Harris did well, Mendez had spent time here. Holistic technique.

  • johan.ferreira2 - 2012-02-16 10:18

  • Emile - 2012-02-16 10:44

Mr Kempson, i cant agree with you more! we had the best props in world rugby, Daan Human, Faan Rautenbach, Cobus Visagie , men that were feared !!!! But we let them go to overseas clubs, and they are still playing there, and worth their weight in gold! (getting close to retirement thou!) If they stayed and our youngsters could have learned from them, WP rugby would have been fine, but yes we didnt invest, and it all comes back to WP manangent, they rather wasted money on AJ Venter, Joe Van Niekerk, James Small, Brian Habanna, CJ van Der Linde, Jaques Fourie, Adriaan Fondse ,Ricky Januarie! but there is not enough money to keep/buy/ invest in Monster Props?? JD Moller was the biggest joke ever and a true reflection that WP management want us to loose!! We will offer Habanna a nother MASSIVE contract, now he is playing centre & Sadie is with the Bulls, sad, indeed ! Tobie Titus, you must go !!!

      Clive - 2012-02-16 11:22

I have to agree. The political idiots running WP rugby are doing the country, not just WP a disservice. It has been common knowledge through the ages, when WP and Bulls rugby is strong, SA rugby is strong!

  • Charl - 2012-02-16 11:42

    crusaders all the way

  • Dustin - 2012-02-16 13:15

@Shaun Robinson - not sure why you would ask that question? The point I'm trying to make is this, you and all the other Stormers fans should be concerned about the lack of vision and planning showed by the management and coaching staff at WP rugby. For example, they buy 2 of the most talented schoolboy flyhalves in recent years (Peter Grant & Lionel Cronje) but don't give them the opportunity to develop the obvious talent they possess. With Peter Grant they kept on either picking him out of position or picking Willem de Waal ahead of him. With Lionel they managed to demote him to 4th or 5th choice whilst picking very mediocre players ahead of him. The apparent lack of interest they show in trying to retain their local talented youngsters (F Hougaard etc.) is common knowledge to all and regarding S Kitshoff, with no international props currently at the union, who is going to mentor this youngster and make sure he develops and fullfill the potential he has shown as a schoolboy player? Whilst I don't support the Stormers, as a Springbok supporter I do realise the importance of having the best players available at each and every union play on a regular basis, especially younger players who normally take a season or so to fully adjust and get their confidence up, and even more so if that union is the one with the most players and talent available. A strong WP side is good for SA rugby as simple as that.

      Bootman - 2012-02-16 17:17

@Dustin There is no such thing as a strong WP side. Not since I've been around anyway. And I'm over 10

  • Jody - 2012-02-17 13:21

This has been WP problem for the past 5 years at least. Why do they ignore this situation.Rugby will never change, if your foundation is weak your team performance will crumble eventually.
