Stormers claim home semi-final

2011-06-18 20:02

Bloemfontein - The Stormers confirmed their second position at the top of the Super Rugby log with a convincing 44-34 win over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The game was tight for the first quarter with the teams taking turns at the goal posts.

The Cheetahs scored first as flyhalf Sias Ebersohn knocked over a penalty three minutes into the game.

The Capetonians soon equalled the scores with a Peter Grant penalty.

The two teams, despite the close opening minutes, were creative on attack but because of tight defence from both sides could only score via the boot of their flyhalves.

Ebersohn gave his side the lead 17 minutes into the first half with another successful penalty kick.

The Stormers once again drew the scores level as Grant converted his second penalty attempt.

Fleet-footed Gio Aplon, however, stole the initiative for the home side as he sprinted through for the Stormers' first of four tries.

Grant converted the try and furthered the coastal team's lead to 13 points with another penalty conversion four minutes later.

The Cheetahs demonstrated their never say die attitude just before the break with a try by eighthman Davon Raubenheimer.

Ebersohn converted to bring the Cheetahs within six points before halftime.

It, however, was the Stormers' dangerous counter attacking that got the better of the Cheetahs.

Duane Vermeulen proved exactly why he was called up for the Springbok planning group as he had a part in many of the Stormers' attacks.

Seven minutes into the second half Juan de Jongh handed off Raubenheimer en route to the tryline as he gave his team an 11 point cushion.

Shortly after the restart, replacement loose forward Nick Koster crossed the tryline as he took advantage of the Cheetahs' lapse in defence.

Grant's conversion saw the Stormers enjoy a healthy 31-13 lead.

The Cheetahs, however, did not give up as Rayno Benjamin scored the first of his hat-trick of tries.

Stormers winger Bryan Habana followed up the restart kick and fielded the ball after it rebounded off his knee and sprinted through for a try.

Habana's try and a Grant penalty in the 71st minute sealed the victory.

However it did not break the Cheetahs' spirit as Benjamin pulled off his third try of the evening.

The Stormers now have a break before their home semi-final on July 2.

  • rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 20:41

This is a try fest, what a magical game to watch.. man I forgot what a class player Grant is... shoe...

      rugby_guru - 2011-06-18 20:45

Stormers have the chance of winning this comp.. even if they don't they have shown the world they have become a world class team, and has my respect and makes me proud to be South African, we have The Bulls back to back champs, Stormers being last years finalists and this year nearly taking overall top spot which is mind blowing how difficult that is, and my Sharks picking up their game and putting their whole heart into the game... Ahhhh, feels good

      SST - 2011-06-18 21:09

Hi rugby_guru, well played fro the Sharks, I thought Daniels had a brilliant game. Well played Stormers, everytime they got into the Cheetahs half they scored. But still I want to say great game by the Cheetahs, they dominated the breakdowns at the start and most of the the match. Well played both teams. I am happy the Stormers have rest for next weekend.

      Storming - 2011-06-19 07:49

both games were brillant to watch for different reasons. The Bulls/Sharks game was a classic example of brutal SA Rugby at its best whereas the Stormers/Cheetahs game was more the cut and thrust of two rapiers. fortunately my team, Stormers, have prvoed to be equally adept at both versions.

  • Andy49 - 2011-06-18 20:51

Excellent game for THE STORMERS to win & secure 2nd position on combined log. 4 try bonus point secured when not really required but we will take it, Habana scores at last.

      Ian - 2011-06-18 21:05

What a halfwitted remark Dowwe Duane! Stormers won fair and square. I hope you never have any one wish you harm, that is so low I can't think of anytning to compare it to. In case you were too drunk to see the match clearly, Vermuelen was one of the stars.

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:10

Hey dowwe donner!!! Whahahaha. Whahahahhahah. Ek julle blou bulle se ons Stormers is grootbekke.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-18 21:15

@EFFEL/Dowwe Duane: Pond scum is what you are. Sir DUANE is more of an ANYTHING than what you will ever be. Wishing injury on people is about the lowest a person can go. You have gone beyond that - may you develop a RASH on your shriveled up nuts. And may I offer you wine to go with your SOUR WHINE. I spit on thee.

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:29

Dowwe Duane- Spog jy of probeer jy spog? Foeitog, net baie onseker mense spog oor materiële dinge om mense te probeer afsit. Ek kry jou gesin jammer.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-18 21:42

@Effel/Dowwe Duane: Hahahahahahahahaha. Shame man, ALL those cars, fancy houses......yet you still spend all your time on a South African website spewing sour vomit? Shame, is it the loneliness that consumes you old chap? I'll light a candle for you.

      Karoobloed - 2011-06-18 21:47

Dowwe Duane - you may think you come across as smart by calling yourself dof and picking on a decent numver 8 at the same time. But evidently you are dof, petty and childish. Judiging by your cars, you need a more expensive house or vice versa. I have a friend in Vancouver who claims $2 million buys one a very "average" house. And I also thought the expats were on average a little more evolved than your petty parochial self. Yes the Crusaders may very well trample the Stormers - but you are evidently not a resident of Christchurch in NZ so what's it to you dude? I am a Stormers supporter, but would not have minded if the Bulls win the cup either - as long as the team is from RSA - at least we all can lay claim to such a victory can't we?

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:48

Dowwe Donner, "We're bored to win the Super cup, has done so how many times.

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:50

@ Dowwe Donner "And the best, Monday I still live in my $ 2million dollar house overlooking the Vancouver beach with the Aston Martin and ML 63 AMG in the garage and travelling the world how many times a year.

      Northern Stormer - 2011-06-18 21:51

@DowweDuanne - Duidelik jy het nie n clue nie - net n obsessie met Duane wat self as hy beseer is nog n beter rating het as Spies - Hahahahahahahahaha !!!!!! 4 Tries, bonus punt, great rugby tussen twee great spanne - well done Cheetahs great sportsmans game gespeel !!!! Hahahahahahaha !!!!

      Atoombom - 2011-06-18 22:56

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 23:12

Whahahahha. Jy is werklikwaar die sadste, snaakste ou ooit!!!

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 23:21

Ai ou Duane, more sit jy met 'n moerse babbelas.

      Kleinboet - 2011-06-19 02:17

      Karoobloed - 2011-06-19 05:36

Dowwe Duane, where exactly is "Vancouver Beach"? I looked on Google Maps and noticed Wreck Beach, Jericho Beach, Kits Beach and English Bay. No "Vancouver Beach" - would that be your own "special creation"? Real rich people do not blabber on public blogs about their house and cars. And real classy people would not make fun of less affluent neighbourhoods in the Cape or Pretoria. You really are someone "special".

      Ockie - 2011-06-19 08:09

Well done Stormers. For you know who .. I pity thee ... there are no pills for what you have ... stupidity!

      Jay - 2011-06-19 08:19

Dowe can you wish injury on a sportsman you poor excuse for a human? You are nothing but an inbred swamp donkey. Take yourself off to the doctor first thing monday and get yourself snipped, because you definately should not be breeding!!!!!!!!

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-19 09:32

Reasons for suspecting factitious disorder include: * The individual's history is vague and inconsistent; or the individual has a long medical record with many admissions at different hospitals in different cities. * The patient has an unusual knowledge of medical terminology or describes the illness as if they are reciting a textbook description of it. * The patient is employed in a medical or hospital-related occupation. * Pseudologia fantastica , a Latin phrase for "uncontrollable lying," is a condition in which the individual provides fantastic descriptions of events that never took place. * The patient visits emergency rooms at times such as holidays or late Friday afternoons when experienced staff are not usually present and obtaining old medical records is difficult. * The patient's behavior is controlling, attention-seeking, hostile, or disruptive. * The symptoms are present only when the patient thinks he or she is being watched. * The patient is abusing substances, particularly prescription pain-killers or tranquilizers. * The course of the "illness" fluctuates, or complications develop with unusual speed

HAHAHAHAHHA Maybe you should leave the old brandy and coke alone. Some other classics from last week Bloubok: "Bulls by 40. Cheetahs by 50. Well done Stormers. I cannot believe that some people such as Dowwe Duane can actually show their total lack of class and blame the ref. The Stormers were by far the better team on the day. To the Cheetas, well done for never giving up. You have once again shown what rugby is all about .

Ek lees graag jou opmerkings. En dan's daar die WPBEFONK'S/SAFFAS/WATALIFE'S, say no more

      Logoll - 2011-06-18 21:59

Nice Dowwe Duane, you are a real gentleman enjoying someone being injured like that. I haven't seen the worst of the other Bulls supporters on this forum saying things like that. Just remember life is a bitch and you reap what you sow. Talking trash about a rugby team is one thing, enjoying some getting seriously injured is at a complete different class of low.

Hey Saffa how brilliantly did our little scrummie play, thank you lord that Januarie was injured!!!

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-18 23:10

@SAFFA and all Stormers supporters - this victory was expected, so well done. I hope that the Stormers go all the way. You guys are so passionate about your rugby, and it will be a just reward for you guys. My Bulls paid for the poor start to the season, but that doesnt soften the blow. I am sure they will be back to give you guys hell next year :- )

      Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-18 23:23

@SST Yes I am, why? Do you think the Sharks gonna beat the Crusaders in Christchurch?

      Jay - 2011-06-19 08:41

Great game. Jean looked solid at wing.....but still looked better when he moved mid field once or twice. Think the guys might have worried about injuries hence some of the soft tries??? Love the way the boys shut down Ashley......he is an abrasive guy and louw stopped him in his tracks with a monstrous hit. Great game...........Stomers 4 life!

  • Wagga - 2011-06-18 21:13

Always a pleasure to watch a Cheetahs game, what a rugby fest, congratulatios to the stormers with the home semi and best of luck for the rest of the tournament.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-18 21:28

@Wagga - I am glad that it is the Cheetahs who managed to take a 1st bonus point off us for 4 tries - testament to their incredible attack. What a team they are! Congrats on a GREAT SEASON!

      Cadder - 2011-06-18 21:49

      MaestroX - 2011-06-18 22:23

      Thanks Wagga!! Much appreciated!

  • PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:17

Lloyd, Brannas, gnus wakker, Ace Ventura, Dowwe Duane, Disa2011, Marcell, Legend: Sluk julle woorde julle grootbek bliksems. STORMERS!!!! Here we go Stormers, here we go!!!

      Carl - 2011-06-18 21:26

Well done to Stromers...they deserve the position that they in and I hope as a HUGE BLUE BULL that the win the cup...........but the BULLS WILL be back just dont wright them off PureAwesomeness.......... they have won this cup 3 times before. That said.......lets hope the Stormers keep it in SA. Bulls forever......

      SST - 2011-06-18 21:40

Thanks Carl, it is nice to hear some objective comment from another team supporter. As you sait, don't write the Bulls off. They will be back, and it is healthy for South African Rugby.

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:54

Give that man (Carl) a Bells...

      Northern Stormer - 2011-06-18 21:59

      Karoobloed - 2011-06-19 20:44

Weer vir onse vriend Dowwe Duane. So van wanneer af is Coal Harbour "Vancouver Beach"?

Dis R14 miljoen. Maar jy's mos vreeslik slim en diktr!l, so jy sal seker reken dis ok f@kkol. En nee, jy maak dit verseker nie!

      Karoobloed - 2011-06-20 07:50

OK misread your income - big deal - you upgraded your "medical career" to something a little more profitable (drug dealer?). Perhaps you can make a banner with all your impressive stats and come swing it around here on Clifton beach (a real beach as opposed to your invented "Vancouver Beach") where Stormer Rugby supporters with real money can have a first hand chuckle at your expense, All jostling aside - your comments are way over the top and very rough around the edges for someone claiming a medical education - something is not adding up here - a little creepy...

  • Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-18 21:20

Easy maths from here: Crusaders-Blues final, all NZ Not good for our WC chances

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:27

      PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:28

Jou mafs is so goed soos Julius Malema s'n dom donner

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-18 21:29

@Effel/DowweD - jy is nie 'n Bok supporter. Rather support Georgia or Russia. The Boks don't NEED you and certainly don't want you.

      Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-20 15:39

@SAFFA Oh I forgot, the boks need SAFFA. The world can't excist without SAFFA. When SAFFA sits down the sun goes under. Ek het nie geweet 'n 5ft7mannetjie met 'n IK van 45 wat 70kg weeg en vir 'n baas werk en nie 'n girl kan kry nie het soveel mag nie. You the man SAFFA you the man!

  • crocowild - 2011-06-18 21:29

Stormers are magic and they haven t even peaked yet.If the Bulls dids not peak against the Sharks tonight,it would have been a slaughter.

  • Kaapie - 2011-06-18 21:33

While i'm glad the stormers won, The scrum is a concern if we are to stand a chance in the semi's. And what happened to good lineout ball.. The coaches have two weeks to sort out some of these issues. Going back to the Bulls game.. I see Spies made one good run and and then... faded..

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-18 21:45

@Kaapie - I agree, that damn scrum of ours.......worrying indeed. Thankfully we have 2 weeks to sort out all the 'niggles', the injuries etc. Our boys needed the 'rest week' more than anything else, and thank the stars we have it - at exactly the right time. Very proud of the chaps I am. We must START the semi, with the same backline......we have 2. Juan de Jongh HAS to be on the field, and Aplon must play 15 - klaar!

  • Deon - 2011-06-18 21:36

We don't need lasers like Loftus.

  • PureAwesomeness - 2011-06-18 21:45

Waar is al daai Bulls nou? Well done Stormers. 1 cup down , 1 to go!

  • WPBEFONK - 2011-06-18 22:19

My hart, my siel, my lewe en my alles, my WP en my Stormers.....

  • Rygar - 2011-06-18 22:19

well done stormers i hope you go all the way, now that Bulls are out Stormers must take the cup as i doubt Sharks will get past the Crusaders at home

  • Oukoos - 2011-06-18 22:23

  • GraemeBB - 2011-06-18 22:50

Never expected this score, but certainly expected a win for the Stormers. My Superbru prediction was by 10, but I didnt think the game would open like this. Well done Stormers - maybe it is the Stormers' time.

  • Dowwe Duane - 2011-06-18 23:17

GO CRUSADERS

The fact that anybody can be glad that someone is injured is pitiful. But coming from someone as stupid as Dowwe Duane is understandable. The guy obviously has no brains or common decency. People like you give rugby supporters a bad name!

  • jan0212 - 2011-06-19 00:23

Geluk Stormers.

Aplon is 'n meneer. Ek salueer hom!

  • ChumScrubber - 2011-06-19 10:37

Blah blah blah, Bulls vs Stormers fans. The article is about the Cheetahs Stormers match. Boring bunch, you lot are like stuck records, same comments sneering at one another, over and over and over. Yawn.

  • Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-19 11:44

Well done to both the Sharks and the Stormers on their respective wins.......and, now that the SA conference is finished, bad luck to the Bulls and Cheetahs. In terms of the Stormers. Although, in the end, they won their game fairly convincingly and yes, the Cheetahs fought to the end, I am a little concerned that we are lacking a little self belief at the moment. This is stifling our ability to play freely, causing unnecessary errors, taking wrong options and putting unnecessary pressure on the team as a whole. After the woeful display against the Bulls last week, this was still evident, though not nearly as much, last night. I felt young Shreuder (sic) had a very good game and got his backline away well.....he certainly has got a very good pass from the base of the scrum! Habana played his best game of the season and, although Peter Grant played a very solid, calm game, I feel, because of his extended injury layoff, he has probably lost ground to some of the other Springbok contenders. I hope that PdV does not allow him to drop below the radar! Overall, a satisfactory performance but not a convincing performance. I felt the Sharks played a much better game in the earlier match and, on that form, would be a formidable obstacle for the Stormers if they have to meet later on in the competition.
