Stormers 'victory before flair'

2012-05-18 12:28

Cape Town - The Stormers have made it clear that victory is primary and they are unlikely to veer away from their game plan in their Super Rugby clash against the Waratahs at Newlands on Saturday.

Despite their fine run of victories, the Stormers have dished up a spate of dreary performances which is in stark contrast to the traditional style of Newlands-based teams.

Waratahs coach Michael Foley said his side expected another strong defensive performance from the hosts.

''They (Stormers) kick the ball into your half and use their defence to force you into error," said Foley.

"They also have a very good goal-kicker and, if they are out of range, they kick for the sideline and maul.

"That's pretty much their game and they are very, very patient with their attacking kicking and try and force you to play a lot of phases without momentum in your own half."

Last week, the Stormers were ordinary at the second-half set-pieces which meant their much-vaunted defence was kept busy and opportunities to attack were restricted.

Jean de Villiers said the set-piece lapses were very much at the heart of the side's "poor" performance, while he praised the Waratahs' display against the Bulls.

“Last week we lost three lineouts when on attack in their 22-metre area, and that does not help the chances of keeping the pressure on opponents to set up good attacking opportunities," De Villiers said.

"The Waratahs didn’t beat the Bulls last week but they were impressive and will be pleased with the way they got several aspects of their game right. They probably should have won that game.”

The Waratahs have also noted that tactical kicking had proved unsettling for the Cape franchise and it could be a handy weapon on Saturday.

"We've learnt from watching the Crusaders and Reds win games against the Stormers that attacking with ball in hand as well as contestable kicks will be vital,'' said Foley.

Tactical kicking has not been a strong point for the Stormers although their chasers at kick-offs have proved troublesome for the opposition.

Fullback Joe Pietersen and flyhalf Peter Grant have not always managed to kick the ball into touch, a weakness which has presented opponents with counter-attacking opportunities.

Much will depend on the physicality of the Stormers' pack since the Waratahs have made a point of adding weight upfront to their team for the Newlands clash.

Koebaai... Go Stormers!!!!

      LaBlue - 2012-05-18 15:09

Dan moet nie kyk nie. Maklik soos dit.

      gustav.louw.12 - 2012-05-18 15:54

      LaBlue - 2012-05-18 16:40

Hoekom word ek nooit gemention nie BlueRaven?

  • pieter.cilliers.33 - 2012-05-18 12:52

The Stormers don't have to change their game plan, they must just play for 80 minutes. They seem to take their foot of the pedal once their 14 points ahead. If they play their second half like they do their first then they will score more tries. \r\nLet's hope last week was their final wake-up call!

  • Acta - 2012-05-18 13:06

    Just keep on chugging...for 90min!

  • Gilbert - 2012-05-18 13:08

might be boring to u seeing u don't enjoy the purist side of rugby mr henning

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-18 13:33

What is "purist" in only defending all the time. Wake up IDIOT!!!

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-18 13:50

I know Raven... I wonder what Danie Craven would have said if he had to witness this pathetic effort the Stompies call "purest rugby". I think he must have turned 11 times in his grave already this season alone, because he sure was a purist! I think he would have supported the Bulls by now!

      Ruan - 2012-05-18 14:22

Koebaai.

      BlouMasjien - 2012-05-18 14:40

@Ruan, Wat is gaat? Bedoel jy gat?

      jan.henning.14 - 2012-05-18 16:22

Gilbert, your definition of pure seems to be way off. Check the scorebord and the past ones too. Nothing pure about the Stormers.

  • Deon - 2012-05-18 13:08

As long as they keep on winning they can not be faulted. Losing 2 or 3 games out of next 4 games might be a problem.

      jan.henning.14 - 2012-05-18 16:24

      And the log position?

  • Hermann - 2012-05-18 13:18

Sterkte Stormers, hoops julle knak die aussies. Bulls groete.

  • Edward - 2012-05-18 13:19

Looking forward to a SUPER STORMERS performance, they will win by playing WINNING rugby in wet conditions. It would be suicide to spread the ball in wet conditions, especially with the Warathas scrum, we can not afford handling errors. GO STORMERS!!!!!

      colin.steyn.5 - 2012-05-18 13:33

Especially when they can't even do it under perfect conditions

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-18 13:34

      GO WARATAHS!!!

      Lionel - 2012-05-18 13:40

Now now Tokkie, weve had this conversation before!!!!

      BlouTokolos - 2012-05-18 13:51

      Sorry Lionel... I can't lie...

  • colin.steyn.5 - 2012-05-18 13:30

How sad that a side like the Stormers need to choose between Rugby (that is the game that William Webb Ellis started - for those wondering) and victory. It just shows how their game deteriorated.

      hvanderlinde - 2012-05-18 13:42

Wait, let me try and understand this.. so by choosing victory they are in fact winning a game of rugby by not playing rugby at all?

      Stirrer - 2012-05-18 13:53

A nee a, Colin, jy is mos 'n Kapenaar in murg en been!

      BlouMasjien - 2012-05-18 14:00

      @colin.steyn.5 . . .by choosing Rugby ,You're a Loser ?

  • James - 2012-05-18 14:06

When the Bulls were playing this style of rugby WP/Stormers supporters had plenty to say now the shoe is on the other foot and all you Stormers supporters say it is all about winning. It is time to admit that the Stormers dont know how to play attractive rugby and defend in the same game. You cant continue to defend every game like you are because they will pick more injuries than bonus points. Oh sorry that has already happened.

      Therealmakoy - 2012-05-18 14:25

Einstein , what do you want the Stormers supporters to say ?? Please stop winning ? Please change your winning game plan ? Please stop being a good defensing team ? Their team`s winning , do you expect them to be up in arms becuase they scored less tries than some of the other teams ?

      aidan.w.naude - 2012-05-19 13:13

That is trash talk and you know it

  • Sigrid - 2012-05-18 14:53

After their poor game against the Cheetas I do not feel that I can trust the ' Trustworthy' Stormers anymore. The Cheetas are one of the worst performing teams in the Super12 this season and for them to have nearly beaten the Stormers sound alarm bells (not the living water Bells). The Stormers inability to obtain bonus points is another factor that counts against them. The Bulls seems to be the teamfrom the SA conference to support, they know how to score bonus points.

      LaBlue - 2012-05-18 15:14

The Cheetahs are actually performing quite well this season. All the matches they've lost, they lost by the thinnest of margins. Also, it's Super Rugby now, haven't been 12 teams in years.

  • Johan - 2012-05-18 15:00

Tipical Stormers, very vocal, ZERO cups

      Therealmakoy - 2012-05-18 15:13

      Johan - 2012-05-18 15:28

NUL/ZERO/ZIP/GEEN

      Paul Botha - 2012-05-18 16:39

  • Craven - 2012-05-18 23:04

My mom is so exited about the Stormers game tomorrow! She went out and bought two 5lt cellar cask boxes of wine( she calls it a Danville briefcase). My dad is english and does not drink so much as mom. My dad also supports the blue bulls so they are always fighting. My dad was shouting at my mom that he doesn't want those loud mouthed drunkard friends of hers to come watch at our house. He gets very embarrassed when my mom drinks too much.

  • thyronrambo.dennis - 2012-05-19 11:56

We only want the 4 points, conditions are not suited for running rugby.I'm backing my boytjies here we go stomers !!!! Make us proud #stormsaam
