Pretoria – No, he does not count his successive penalties. Every kick is approached as if it’s the first of the match.
So says Morné Steyn, the biggest points machine in Super Rugby for the last year or two.
He needs only 243 points this year to become the first South African to notch 1000 points in the competition.
“I just hear about it sometimes. Like last year when I slotted 41 successive kicks or something like that. It’s definitely not something that is at the back of my mind when I kick goals,” said the friendly Bulls player.
Only two players – Dan Carter (1078) and Stirling Mortlock (1019) have passed the 1000 mark.
Steyn may also reach the mark this year, particularly with there being four more matches. Last year he scored 263 points in the tournament. It’s the most by any player in a season of Super Rugby.
Steyn’s four drop goals is the record for the most drop goals in a match and he is the joint holder of the record for the most drop goals in Super Rugby with Andrew Mehrtens, namely 17.
Mehrtens, Carter (twice) and Steyn are the only players to have scored 200 points in a series.
Steyn’s dominance is placed in perspective when one considers that only three other South Africans have scored more than 500 points in Super Rugby. They are Louis Koen, André Pretorius and Peter Grant.
However, Steyn is not resting on his laurels. He is practicing his kicking on the Loftus B field every day.
Kicking coach Vlok Cilliers said that Steyn’s work ethic could clearly be seen in the statistics.
“I sometimes work out exercises for him aimed at getting him to kick better systematically. But then he kicks everything over from the outset and I have to work out new routines to give him a fresh challenge,” said Cilliers.
“Morné’s hard work in training is definitely a lesson for aspiring kickers. He is also working hard at his tactical kicking. It’s an important year for Morné and it looks as if he’s going to have a good season.”
