Sharks win Durban derby

2012-05-26 20:50

Durban - The Sharks kept their Super Rugby playoff hopes alive with a 25-20 win over the Stormers in a tense all-South African clash in Durban on Saturday.

The Sharks' fourth victory in a row lifted them to sixth in the standings and they also moved to within five points of the Stormers who still top the South African conference.

"The South African derbies can be tough and you have to be on your toes to win them," Sharks captain Keegan Daniel said in a pitch-side interview.

"We came up with a new game-plan after the loss to the Chiefs and it has worked out for us," he added.

The Sharks were full value for their victory as they ran in three tries to two against a Stormers' defence which had conceded just 12 tries in their previous 11 matches

The visitors made the early running eased to a 6-3 lead thanks to two successful penalty kicks from flyhalf Peter Grant with the Sharks replying through a penalty from fullback Patrick Lambie.

But the hosts soon began dominating the set pieces and outmuscling their opponents at the breakdown and they breached the Stormers' defence in the 18th minute when former France flyhalf Frederic Michalak dotted down after scrumhalf Charl McLeod had taken a quick tap penalty.

Lambie extended the lead with his second penalty before the Sharks went to the half-time break holding a 20-6 lead thanks to a try from No 8 Daniel after flank Willem Alberts had been held up just short of the Stormers' line.

The Sharks grabbed their third try just after the restart when flank Marcell Coetzee surged upfield before off-loading to left wing Lwazi Mvovo who crashed over in the corner.

The score invigorated the Stormers who claimed their first when fullback Gio Aplon scooped up a loose pass from Michalak on the Sharks' 10-metre line to outstrip the cover defence on his way to a converted try.

The Stormers, trailing by 12 points, turned down a number of kickable penalties in search of a try but they were repelled by a determined Sharks' defensive effort.

With eight minutes left the Cape Town-based Stormers set up a tense finish after Aplon went over for his second try following a jinking 40-metre run past three players but the Sharks held on.

Stormers captain Jean de Villiers lamented his team's failure to take their chances.

"We probably didn't capitalise on our opportunities and we made a lot of mistakes but I do think the best team won," said De Villiers.

The Sharks picked up four points for their victory, but stayed third in the South African Conference. They did however move into sixth position in the Combined standings.

The Stormers picked up a point for losing by seven or fewer points to extend their lead at the top of the South African Conference. They stayed second in the Overall log however, three points adrift of the Chiefs.

In next weekend's Round 15 action, the Sharks travel to Johannesburg to face the Lions, while the Stormers play the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

    Weekend full of surprises!!!!

      René - 2012-05-26 20:57

What surprises??? This game could have gone either way, surely you did not think that the Sharks would just arrive and play 'dead'???

      Jack - 2012-05-27 10:13

Janee, Rene knew her vlou nulle had no hope of beating the Chiefs!

  • Priester - 2012-05-26 20:52

O gonnas papsakke! Wat het nou gebeur?!?!? Congrats Sharks!! You certainly smeared the papsakke thereby opening the door to the SA conference. Great stuff. Blou Bul Groete!

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-26 21:04

      Priester - 2012-05-26 21:17

Stormkaap I have congratulated the Chiefs with their win. Do you want me to congratulate you for your Bonus Point which you did not deserve or earned? Blou Bul Groete!

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-26 21:55

I acknowledge that we played poorly, the problem with the Bulla supporters is that you shoot your muths off before the game and when u lose you are insincere in your congratulations.. You fail o be critical of your teams shortcomings and praise even your poor players like your captain who was directionless in the quarter of the game. You like to rile other supporters but when it is dished out to you then the stormers are arrogant. Die grootste grootbek is Tokkie..No one said that we gods gift to rugby, imt is what you choose to believe.Dont worry about the Craven week.. just as Affies beat Grey so did Paarl Boys.. And you werre beaten by Griquas in VC And the S15 is far from done.. And talkin bout craven week... that is where Spies should be ..even though he had one of his better games by his poor standards he has set for the past three years , against the Chiefs.

      Priester - 2012-05-26 21:59

Ag ou daspoort daardie toelaag is so klein. Blou Bul Groete vir jou my maat!

  • Donavan - 2012-05-26 20:55

    shhhh hahahahahahaha rks!!

  • RetiefC - 2012-05-26 20:56

Baie geluk Sharks!! Julle het karakter gewys.

      hugo.naude - 2012-05-26 21:59

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-27 00:39

Daspoort , like I said in a previous post. Hugo is precisely one of those arrogant Bulla supporters..

      hugo.naude - 2012-05-27 07:44

Geluk Sharks !!!!!!!!!!

  • Danie - 2012-05-26 20:58

    Well done Sharks. Stormers groete

      Danie - 2012-05-26 21:04

Sorry Johan ek dink jy verwar my met iemand anders. Mooi aand verder.

      Shaun - 2012-05-27 10:59

      Johan go suck a dick

  • Piet - 2012-05-26 21:00

THAT'S MY TEAM!!!! Go Sharks ,GO....

      René - 2012-05-26 21:12

@Pieter, you have the bragging rights for the next week... Your team really played well. Congrats

      Roland - 2012-05-27 00:56

Geluk van die mense in die Kaap - not even an NFL-foward pass could save us!!! I always said today was going to be twice as hard as the trip to Loftus next week. Enjoy - julle verdien dit!!!

      Pomene - 2012-05-27 09:51

Excellent performance by Sharks and as a Stormer supporter, I am worried about 2 June 2012 !!

  • Stormkaap - 2012-05-26 21:00

Tiaan the reason why you wont make the Springbok squad it because you dont find your jumpers.. Time for Stormers to find a real hooker. And Fleckie our backline is poor even though we have great players.. And we were scrummed in our chops... And we were poor.. And Etsebeth needs a break.. And we need to pick ourselves up for Sat.. against the Pink Cows

      René - 2012-05-26 21:06

@Stormkaap, your team looked 'pap' - I think this 'defensive game plan' is catching up and the bodies are caving. Sad that the coach allowed this to happen.

      Paul Botha - 2012-05-26 21:07

Pink cows gonna walk all over the Papsakke !

      Paul - 2012-05-26 21:19

That stormers back line is as static as the titanic !

      Johann - 2012-05-26 21:23

      Paul - 2012-05-26 21:24

Pierre's last two game he actually played well in my humble opinion ! And for that matter he played much better than Jebb! Bring on the papsakke !! P.s he is the next Bok captain so suck on that!

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-26 22:03

Tokkie dont tell u want Mof wynand for the bokke.. 1 try in 33 tests and Never a decent game.. and do u want to tell me that JJ and for that matter any of the bulls wings should be up for Bok selections. I am good enough to say that Grant aint bok material and neither duvies, but will also say hougie should be the Bok Scrummie ahead of FDP and would as mad as hell if Spies makes the run on 15, because he doenst deserve it on present form. And can you honestly say he is the best 8 availlable to the bokke. Even the cheetahs 8 plays better than him presently.

      Roland - 2012-05-27 00:57

...and I think the Sharks would've put 30 past the Bulls tonight!!!! They played that well!!

      Gerald - 2012-05-27 11:26

I am a huge Sharks supporter but I can't help but wonder what has gone wrong with Andries Bekker. He just doesn't seem to have an effect on the Stormers lineouts and their game in general, anymore. I really thought that he would dominate the lineouts for the Springboks for the foreseeable future, but after watching his (non)performances so far this season, I don't think he should even make the side

      Jack - 2012-05-27 18:28

I want to know why we stopped competing in the lineout - we stole all their lineout ball and then suddenly stopped competing...WTF??? We have to get rid of Broken Harris. I've watched him play at Newlands and I swear there are some games where he doesn't even want to be on the field. I think we should buy Coenie off the FS for next season - or fast-track that new youngster whose name I can't remember.

      Deon - 2012-05-27 19:04

Agree jackblack Broken Harris is useless. Another useless buy was van den Heever the guy doesn't look like he wants to be there, I know you don't have to run around with a smile on your face but jeepers somebody light a cracker up his @ss also looks like he is carry about 10kg too much......slow slow slow.

  • Paul Botha - 2012-05-26 21:04

One question do the Papsakke actually score any legal try's ! Sharks made my weekend and the "mighty" Etzebeth and Bekker got found out this weekend !

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-26 22:05

And the Bulls havent benifitted from poor ref decisions.. Idiots like you have to realise that in all games refs will make mistakes..

      Deon - 2012-05-27 19:24

come on thats a bit harsh your loose forwards played very well (Daniels should play ahead of Spies for SA)considering we had third choice loose forwards and a hooker play 6, why didnt you guys put 50 points on us? LOL

      Dustin - 2012-05-28 15:40

Agree they were very lucky to get anything from this game. Etsebeth I feel is just overplayed he needs a break, but Bekker is his same old self, overrated with no hunger for the game. Etsebeth should partner Kruger for the Bokke.

  • Stephan - 2012-05-26 21:05

Well played Sharks. Glad you are still in the top 6 and possible play-off position. Was a good game for South African rugby. The Sharks were the better team.

  • david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-05-26 21:06

Sharkies!!!!!! Well done guys, great game!!! What an end to the rugby weekend!!!

      Roland - 2012-05-27 01:02

Well done, from Cape Town - you guys turned up bigtime..we were left wanting - SA rugby SUPER-STRONG...

  • Steven Trollip - 2012-05-26 21:10

    Mooi Sharkys!!!!Ysters!!!!!!

  • dawiej - 2012-05-26 21:12

Well played sharks , nice to see you in the top 6. Stormers , take a break, we cant win them all. Now for the big one next weekend Go Stormers...

      Stormkaap - 2012-05-26 22:06

      Japjapjap - 2012-05-26 22:51

sterkte ou @dirk- ons weet dis ni lekker ni, maar dis miskien ni di ergste ni?? di ouens raak seker bekommerd daar onder... vir di volgende paar wedstryde wat voorle??

  • phillip.beukes.5 - 2012-05-26 21:13

That has thrown the cat amongst the pigeons.... great game, and a fortunate forward pass for a bonus point...

  • Lean - 2012-05-26 21:19

People with no lifes, how pathetic. It's just a game. And calling people names, and all kinds of stuff over a game, maybe you should reconsider the way you live. Some of the remarks on here makes me very ashamed to say I am a South African. It is really pathetic. I Am a huge rugby supporter, and Support pretty much any SA team, but the stuff I read on here all the time makes me think there is a reason things are happening the way they are. I DO miss SA a lot, but some of the comments I see here and on other sites, makes me feel like people need to grow up. And if grown ups talk like that over a game, well that is pretty sad. Nothing wrong with supporting your team, but calling people names and all that crap just because of who they support is just plain arrogant, stupid, etc etc. At the end its Rugby that should be the winner, and Hopefully an SA teams wins it, if not ah well, it's just a game. Grow up some of you, life goes on, win or lose. Just like we lost at last Year's World Cup, Life still goes on. Calling people names and stuff changes nothing, but shows how immature you are.

      bfvillet - 2012-05-26 21:31

agree and its time to forgive Bryce but a bit of friendly banter surely wont hurt anyone but like you say some people tend to go overboard

      dave.reyneke - 2012-05-26 21:36

@Lean I feel the same about a lot of these comments... Very little constructive comments regarding strategies, variiation of game plan, intelligent subs, 50/50 calls etc. I'm a die-hard Bulls supporter but can respect the fact that we get outplayed from time to time (Luckily not that often but every game lost hurts like hell..) IMHO the Stormers got drilled in the scrums and Alberts had a good game. The Frenchman (FM) also had a blinder which kept the Sharks on the front foot Next weekend will be BIG Bulls Greetings

      Paul - 2012-05-26 21:36

It's a bit of mudslinging nothing more so I wouldn't have sleepless nights over the banter!

      René - 2012-05-26 21:44

@Lean, sorry I missed your post after the Bulls game yesterday! You always pop up with your 'morality speech', if it is so important to you, apply it across the board OK??

      Japjapjap - 2012-05-26 22:59

      Paul - 2012-05-26 23:43

      Lean - 2012-05-27 03:41

Poor Tokolos, this is not a team thing, Its a COuntry thing, we all know you are just a forum troll anyways, and what you do and say are childish so Nobody really cares what you have to say. I Don't comment on here that often, I don't have to troll the forums everyday to make myself feel better. Enough of that anyways. See it is pretty simple, the Sharks played really well and deserved to win. At the end the scoreline means nothing, wins is what counts. Sure Stormers had a bad day, but If Im not mistaken every team has lost, so obviously no team is perfect. At the end It's rugby I love and all that matters, I get up at 3 AM to watch most games here in the US, which does suck especially if you have to go to work later, but if you love the game, you do whatever you can to watch it. The more SA teams do good the better for SA rugby, that is the most important thing, in the end I could care less if the Kings win the Super 15, as long as the Boks are strong that is my main passion. There is TONS and TONS of talent in SA currently, My main concern is Scrumhalf, pretty obvious Hougaard is the best atm, but after that not many have shown anything. Maybe at center too with Jaque Fourie out. Other than that we have loads of talent in every position, esp the Loose forwards, there is a good 10 you could pick there that wouldn't let the Boks down. As for number 10, the future is surely with Goosen and Lambie, they are both very good, but my money is on Goosen. He is very good.

  • Nathan - 2012-05-26 21:35

Lol even when they get a bonus 7 points they loose:P

      Hans - 2012-05-26 21:40

  • Shawn Appel - 2012-05-27 05:23

Goooood game sharkies! Totally deserved the win and deserved to win by the more accurate margin of 25-6

      ray.stadlerjd1 - 2012-05-27 15:20

      LOL very funny :)

  • ShakorAhmed - 2012-05-27 08:49

The Sharks' fourth victory in a row lifted them to sixth in the standings , Actually so funny

  • Bee Mcaks - 2012-05-27 09:00

There was no way Cheetahs would come alive from the Sharks Tank shapa Sharks shapa

  • Clive - 2012-05-27 09:21

No mention in this report that Aplon's second try was from a clear forward pass, although the move itself was quite brilliant. The better team won for sure, but I will still root for the Stormers next week.

  • fsjohnson - 2012-05-27 09:27

GO Stormers, they cannot pass us on the point logs, even if they try their best-we will end ahead of them.

  • Michael - 2012-05-27 09:28

I'm a Stormers supporter - and with that out of the way... The Sharks were at least 20 points better than us yesterday and from what I saw a simple fact was reinforced - - No team performance can be competitive with a forward pack in retreat - The Sharks pack were sublime, not only in the set pieces but their support play in the open phases was the best I've seen this season (That Marcell Coetzee kid - what a find!) The destruction up front translated into confused re-grouping hence the inability of our backline and those 3 tries - which could have been a number more. Bekker, Etzebeth and company have been outstanding in earlier matches this season however, it seemed as if our pack missed out on breakfast or something but one thing is for sure, we'd better get the mojo back right quickly or next week is going to hurt. -

      rinus.groeneveld.7 - 2012-05-27 09:59

Must agree with you Michael! And Coetzee = pure Bok!! Jeez, crucial games coming up and suddenly the SA conference is wide open! But for the Boks' sake, I'm glad that some of the old hands (Bismarck, Beast) are putting up their hands again and that there's life in the loose-forward positions after Spies!

  • greggmac - 2012-05-27 10:11

What a shocking match report. Headline is Sharks win Durban derby when it should be something along the lines of Sharks smash Stormers. No mention of the blatant forward pass for Aplon's second try...oh of course I forgot "Sport 24" is a Cape Town based operation and can't be to see or report of their beloved Stormers getting a good klap!!

  • riana.caine - 2012-05-27 10:37

I've said it all along, Allister Coezee hasn't got what it takes in the big league. Every year the same story. Stormers scream off to the front then fizzle out. How many more chances are they going to give this "coach"? He has not won anything for us ,ever!

      ray.stadlerjd1 - 2012-05-27 15:37

Hey dnt be so hard on him, he has a more success ratio than most SA coaches, and they did well, I mean against a side with 4 to 1, if not 6 to 1 springboks in thr pack, wow I’m surprised they defended thr total in the second half

  • Bossie - 2012-05-27 10:45

Why worry about the final score, the fact is that the Sharks won and as Jean said, they were the better team on the day,I agree with Jean and it had to come at some time or the another.STORMER.

WITH AGE COMES MATURITY,OR SAY THEY SAY.THERE ARE MANY ADULTS ON THIS SITE THAT HAS HAS JUST NOT MATURED OR GROWN UP.REMINDS ME OF JUNIOR SCHOOL WHEN 11-12 YEAR OLD CHILDREN USE TO TEASE EACH OTHER OVER THE WEEK-END SPORTING RESULTS.ANY FOOL CAN CRITICIZE,BUT CAN SELDOM OFFER CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM BECAUSE OF THEIR LOW SENSE OF MENTALITY.

Well said , but the crusaders will take the cup in the end.

  • Norval - 2012-05-27 19:26

  • Schalk - 2012-05-28 07:28

Congratulations Sharks - You were the better team. Stormer Groete

Saw this coming as Stormers game-plan has become quite predictable and glad Sharks did us proud. Stormers better wake up, travelling to Loftus to an angry Bulls side...

  • mvw74 - 2012-05-28 08:04

Well-done to the Sharks you guys deserved the win!….Stormers fan

  • Dustin - 2012-05-28 15:36

Stormers lucky to get anything out of this game. Marcell Coetzee was EVERYWHERE. All 3 loosies of the Sharks were very good on the weekend and with Bissie coming back to form they look like a very hard nut to crack.
