Frans Steyn tears pectoral muscle

Cape Town - Sharks duo Stephan Lewies and Frans Steyn face a long stint on the sidelines after picking up injuries.

Sharks Director of Rugby Gary Gold on Wednesday that lock Lewies and utility back Steyn are set to undergo surgery, which will rule them out for extended periods.

"Unfortunately it looks like they're both going to be out with some long term injuries," Gold told reporters.

"Stephan has ruptured his patella tendon, and Fransie has torn his pectoral muscle. It looks like both will need surgery so that is very disappointing for us."

Both players got injured in last week’s 21-14 win over the Reds in Brisbane.

They are the latest additions to an injury list that already includes the likes of Cobus Reinach (fractured hand), Pieter-Steph du Toit (knee) and Pat Lambie (neck vertebrae).

In their next Super Rugby assignment, the Sharks host the Rebels at Kings Park in Durban on Friday (19:10 kick-off).
