SARU delays final S15 decision

2012-07-05 22:00

Johannesburg - The SA Rugby Union (SARU) on Thursday evening announced that the ordinary general meeting scheduled for July 13 has been postponed.

It was at this meeting that a final decision would have been made on who the five SA franchises for the 2013 season should be. The Southern Kings have been guaranteed a spot in the 2013 season's SA conference, while the participation of the other four teams still had to be decided.

SARU said in a statement that the meeting was postponed on request from the majority of the provincial unions.

It did not say when the meeting would be rescheduled.

On request of the provincial unions..what a load of crap!! Spineless SARU, now where does this leave the Lions/Kings? SARU have to come up with the plans for the future, what input do the unions need to add?

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-05 23:00

They to scared to do anything that is why. It's a question of pass the buck...

      brett.macdonald1 - 2012-07-06 05:58

If "contractual obligations" involving TV rights etc are really the reason that SA couldn't enter a 6th team in the Super Rugby tournament, then surely that same contract entails that the current five teams of Sharks; Bulls; Stormers; Cheetahs & Lions are the five teams that need to feature from South Africa, not the Kings…

      Paddy - 2012-07-06 07:15

SARU's final decision is the one they will make after they change their minds for the last time....

      dustin.dewet - 2012-07-06 09:27

We should just inform the NZ and Aus rugby administrators that there WILL be 6 SA sides in next year's tournament. If they don't like it tough. Let's see how they survive without the 70% of the total funds generated by us. It is time we stop doing everything that benefits them and start doing what benefits us. If Louis Luyt was still in charge this bulls__t would not have been tolerated. Mr Hoskins and company should grow a pair and put their foot down. I'm all for the developement of rugby in all countries but not when it is done at the detriment of SA rugby. We as South African rugby supporters have the power to make or break Sarfu and Sanzar as we are the ones who pay to watch the games. So if they keep on doing what they are doing right now simply don't watch the tournament. With the abundance of talent in SA we can easily add a King's side that will be just as competitive as either the Force or Rebels if not more. The structure should also change because currently we play more tough games than any of the Aus sides. I'm sure the Stormers, Bulls and Sharks would love to play the Force and Rebels twice a season rather than playing each other or the Cheetahs or Lions.

      cape.maori - 2012-07-06 10:37

@Dustin - listening to Tony on ReUnion it seems that SARU proposed the current system of regional conferences. I agree that Australia is the only country that benefits from this system.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-06 11:43

Dustin, I think we need to have the revenue figures for this season before we get up and shout foul. The report earlier about attendance showed that numbers were up in NZ, not so in Aus. The other thing to take into account is exchange rates, rather than just numbers. A worry is the attendance in Australia dropping, put down to three of their teams not really competing. This has been the same at the Lions, and once the initial euphoria wears off will happen at the Kings [if they play Super Rugby].

      Emile - 2012-07-06 23:06

Let's hope TV Rights will prevent the Kings from playing Super Rugby. Which television network will pay mega millions to bradcast absolute rubbish. Even in PE nobody attends rugby games of the Kings. SARU made an idiotic political decision not in any interest of the sport and now doesn't have the balls to stand up and correct a diabolical decision.

  • thomas.cannon.712 - 2012-07-05 22:40

They only now realise how deep the hole they dug is!!! It's a case of "OooooHhhhh" now we see what the public have been telling us for the last three years!!!!!

  • scott.kirby.752 - 2012-07-05 22:49

What a complete balls up... Typical Saru, the entire top management should be replaced with people who are even slightly competent.

  • Mandy Casey - 2012-07-05 22:50

    Bulls or Sharks?

      Patrick Cawood - 2012-07-05 23:33

Take that to another discussion area...

      koos.vandermerwe.338 - 2012-07-06 01:32

  • Pat - 2012-07-06 00:20

make the lions cheetahs and spears 1 team!! i dont mind going back to super 14 or even super 12!! western force and rebels should be 1 team aswell

      boltonbarry - 2012-07-06 08:22

      luke.sportify - 2012-07-06 09:30

Who the Spears? U been in hiding?

  • Rich - 2012-07-06 03:15

Very Mickey Mouse, couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery etc etc etc.

  • Johan - 2012-07-06 05:03

Pretty easy, 5 teams for next year: 1)Bulls 2) Sharks 3) Cheetahs 4) Lions 5) Kings

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-07-06 05:18

you know, this idiotic vendetta against the Stormers is really getting old. Spiesie... The Stormers beat your side twice this year and is on top of the conference, on track to win the conference for the second year in a row. The Stormers also have the best crowd attendances at newlands of any S15 franchise. On what possible basis would you leave them out? Idiot...

      Lunga - 2012-07-06 06:36

      Hahahaha... Someone had to bite.

      paul.sdoow - 2012-07-06 06:42

the only team to have lost to two of the bottom feeders lions and blues is the bulls make the bulls and lions hand the play off for the spot. and watch the lions beat the bulls ha ha ha

      marschoeman - 2012-07-06 07:27

@fransvisserdsb Just for clarity.... The Stormers is the ONLY side that have crowd attendances at Newlands...

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-06 07:59

@jou ma, The Crusaders also have crowd attendances at Newlands : )

      boltonbarry - 2012-07-06 08:23

Johan I am a Lion. I can not see for a second that reasoning for leaving out one of our strongest team unless you are trolling for a reaction

      pieter.thefuture - 2012-07-06 09:36

@jou_ma : mmm, so you are saying that everyone that walks through the gates at Newlands is a Stormers supporter. Only in a perfect world, but unfortunately part of the crowd does support the opposition. And you would also be stating that when the Springboks play at Newlands there will be no crowd, nor any crowd for WP? The point that was being made is that there are more people at a stormers home game on average than at any other s15 franchise, over the history of superrugby, not just this year.

  • frans.visserdsb - 2012-07-06 05:07

Simple solution. Let us do what Soccer has done in Europe. give the top 4 sides in the Currie Cup automatic entry into the S15 for the next year, and the 5th and 6th sides play off. On top of that, have a reverse draft pick system. The S15 sides can contract 25 players from their Currie Cup Squad, that forms the basis of their S15 squad. Then all the other players in SA goes int a pool and the S15 sides can pick 10 players out of this pool to strengthen their side. With the lowest ranked team to pick the first player, the second lowest the second... etc. this is what the NFL does with the college footballers. The players that are picked like this still keep their contracts, but the S15 franchise has to pay their home union their cost...

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-06 07:33

@Dory, The Currie Cup featuring teams representing provinces ,The Super 15 featuring Regional teams. Americans call themselves world champions when they win a national sportscon, and you want to follow them

      maakdiebulle.almalbokke - 2012-07-06 07:50

Come to think of it. The stormers call themselves world champions when they win the Conference Cup

      Mr.visvangfrikkie - 2012-07-06 08:13

@maak..bulle....almal bla bla bla: Not world champs..just champions of South Africa! Next time you beat the Stormers then you can claim that you beat the world champs..... but this could take some time!!

      luke.sportify - 2012-07-06 09:31

      sorry u make no sense

      LaBlue - 2012-07-06 10:08

Maakdiebulle. Jy is darem 'n idioot. Al waar hul hulself "World Champions" noem soos wat jy sê, is met baseball, en selfs dan is dit die World Series champs. Die kompetisie was vernoem na die New York World newspaper. Ek dink dis 'n goeie idee wat Frans hier beet het.

  • franklyn.davies.1 - 2012-07-06 06:12

hahaha,SARU jou doring ! cmon we know you are going to hassle SANZAR to allow the extra team....you are going to make our name gat, they have already made it quite clear about the issue,NO extra teams.who is the fall guy ? you know the EP Kings are not going to make the grade, leave the politics alone....hahahaha...too funny.

  • Trevor - 2012-07-06 07:05

They just putting off the announcement; decision was made long ago around a political table. holding off the announcement for as long as possible because they know whatever gets decided they are going to be bombarded by the public and the media. bunch of pricks!!

  • chadjason.wilson - 2012-07-06 07:15

What about a team called the Lion Kings.... animated comedy at its best....

      ruan.vanniekerk.754 - 2012-07-06 07:29

      What about Zuma's Spears?

  • Asdiedamwalbars - 2012-07-06 07:53

Just can not see what problem could it be to decide which 5 must be in the Super 15 franchise. The only very bad decision was to promise the Kings a spot. They could net even win or end up second in the Vodacom Cup. If they want a spot. they must first deliver the goods. Do SARU want to make South African Rugby a disaster or a joke in the face of the world and our supporters.

It really is simple: tell the Kings to go away and earn their place!

  • Mr.visvangfrikkie - 2012-07-06 08:16

Let the Lions and Kings have a 3 game playoff, with the winner replacing the other in next year's tournament? Does anyone really believe that the Kings will do any better than the Lions? (Some will argue that they can't do any worse than the Lions though!!) Cheeky, I fear, will get his way though!!

      luke.sportify - 2012-07-06 09:32

      sorry that makes no sense

      cap.mor.5 - 2012-07-06 09:38

Don't you think the Lions have had enough time to sort out their troubles?

  • sean.brady.14224 - 2012-07-06 08:48

So unexpected! The problem is that the experts brought in have worked out you can't squeeze six sides into five places! Now SARU are confused...

  • jalo.kula - 2012-07-06 09:43

easy, kings must first win the first division(this is obvious)" IF" they do then they must have a best of 3 playoff against the lions and the cheetahs. the top two teams go through. this will end the debate and the lions and cheetahs will stay. if not, they have no-one to blame but themselves

  • neil.volschenk.7 - 2012-07-06 09:46

bring back the cats!!! problem solved

  • sam.hearn.758 - 2012-07-06 10:34

Easy solution: Have a play-off between the Spears and the Lions. Winners play Super Rugby. If the Lions loose, they will have no leg to stand on. However, nowhere on this planet can I see the Spears beating the Lions. We'll easily put 50 past them!

      cape.maori - 2012-07-06 10:39

The Lions belong in the same division as the Spears!

      luke.sportify - 2012-07-06 16:22

Cape Moari U IDIOT Go back to klipfontein

      luke.sportify - 2012-07-06 16:30
