New S15 trophy unveiled

2011-06-30 09:15

Cape Town - The new trophy that will be presented to the inaugural Vodacom Super Rugby champions on 9 July, 2011 has been unveiled by SANZAR.

The trophy is made from solid stainless steel, stands 65 cm tall, weighs 18 kilograms and will be the symbol of Vodacom Super Rugby success from 2011 and beyond.

The trophy design is inspired by the core elements of rugby - tradition, physical toughness, camaraderie and skill.

The trophy was designed by leading Sydney-based consultancy, Blue Sky, and manufactured by Box & Dice, a specialised prototype and production company, also based in Sydney. The two companies have worked on a number of multi-award winning design projects, amongst them the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch.

“The shape of the trophy is centred around three curved legs, each representing the Conferences involved in the Super Rugby competition,” said SANZAR CEO, Greg Peters.

“Bold colours on each leg correspond to the Conferences with gold for Australia, black for New Zealand, and green for the South African Conference.

“The legs of the trophy reach upward referencing the arms of players in a line-out, and the legs also create the shape of a rugby ball in the centre of the trophy. A new feature is the incorporation of the SANZAR logo under the base of the trophy.

The Super Rugby champions’ trophy is the focal element of a ‘family’ of silverware produced for the Super Rugby competition.

“Already, the respective Conference winners – the Reds (Australia), Stormers (SA) and Crusaders (NZ) have been presented with similar, scaled-down trophies for their achievements during the regular season,” Peters said.

“The champions trophy is the ‘big one’, and will become the ultimate symbol of Super Rugby supremacy in the years to come”.

The trophy was made using the latest materials and manufacturing processes, with the respective components cast in solid stainless steel before being polished to a mirror finish.

  • SAFFA-CAT - 2011-06-30 09:22

It looks like a tooth...........a frikkin tooth? Mind you..representing the toothless Sanzar is possibly the artistic motivation? A trophy in the mould of a backbone might be ideal for any SARU competitions?

      Alexander Luthor - 2011-06-30 10:18

LOL... a frikkin tooth, you're bloody right. Gave me a good laugh :-)

      Flee - 2011-06-30 12:17

It actually looks like one of those Bulls Hard Hat (viking) things... But Upside down... Guess they designed this before they saw how crappy the Bulls (Defending Champs) were playing LOLOLOL HHahahah I Funny..

  • Johann - 2011-06-30 09:22

    Looks like a rocket.

  • JIMBO99 - 2011-06-30 09:26

trophies mean nothing, its the pride and honour that comes with them that counts.

  • watalife - 2011-06-30 09:27

Going to look even better in the Mighty Stormers Trophy Cabinet.

      Jan - 2011-06-30 10:28

      Uwe Klopfer - 2011-06-30 12:21

  • Kok - 2011-06-30 09:27

      watalife - 2011-06-30 09:33

Maybe the empty box will be sent back to Christchurch as a token of sympathy after the Saders lose.

      Kok - 2011-06-30 10:00

Insensitive bastard you. I hope a earthquake strikes you and your family too.

      watalife - 2011-06-30 10:03

      Oukoos - 2011-06-30 11:18

@KOK-less is full of stront this morning. I can promise you two things. Promise I: After Saturday the Saders will still be in the run for the S15 trophy. Promise 2: It will be for the 2012-S15 trophy (NOT for the 2011 trophy!) Lekker suffer my ou

      Frik - 2011-06-30 18:38

@Kok as 'n Bulls ondersteuner kan ek net my simpatie uitspreek met julle mense in Christchurch. Dit was/is 'n absolute tragedie en ek hoop julle wen die cup vir julle mense...Dit is net tipies van die stoffer ondersteuners wat sulke ondeurdagte opmerkings sal maak... Sterkte vir die SAders SAterdag!!!

  • Kangaroo - 2011-06-30 09:28

I suggest the Stormers management have a replica made. They never gonna see the real thing.

  • CTC - 2011-06-30 09:32

Ugly new trophy for ugly new competition. When will the admisitrators realise their greed is killing the game. Too much rugby means more injuries to players, shorter careers for players, the fans getting bored and the stadiums emptying. The playoffs said it all - poor rugby played by exhausted teams in front of embarrassingly small crowds. Lets get back to: a) Super 12 b) Tri-nations every second year - so not in World Cup year and not when the Lions tour the southern hemisphere c) In the year that the Lions tour the southern hemisphere, the other 2 nations play an old traditional 3 test series with tour games etc. So in 2013 when the Lions tour Aus, then SA and NZ play a 3 test series

      Alexander Luthor - 2011-06-30 10:24

My thoughts exactly! Only, because we already have 5 franchises per country, I was thinking have an inter-conference comp at the beginning of the season (NOT home-and-away though) to determine the top 4 teams to play the other top 4 teams of each conference. And maybe the wooden spoonists of each conference to play in a little comp that could feature Japan, Argentina, the Pacific Isles?

      Oukoos - 2011-06-30 11:19

      Excellent suggestions!

      Joshua Austin - 2011-06-30 16:30

Some of your suggests are legitement. Super 12 will never happen. There is no way that 3 Super Rugby teams are gonna give up their spot in the elite Southern Hemisphere competition. What we need is a rethink in the composition. With Argentina joining the Tri-Nations in the near future, Super Rugby should become more like the Hieneken Cup with pools where only the teams within the pools play each other. Club sides from Argentina and the Pacific Islanders should be put together and included in Super Rugby. There will effectively be more teams, more players but less games because of the pool system. Trinations should be played every year. It still has value in a World Cup year as it serves as a good preparation tournament against 2 of the 3 best teams in the World. Incoming and Outgoing tours should be kept inact except for when there is a Lions tour.

  • RedAlert - 2011-06-30 09:33

      BlouBos - 2011-06-30 10:39

The only thing that wil go to Table Mountain will be a photo of the Crusaders holding the trophy.

  • GHT - 2011-06-30 09:50

I am just wondering. What happened to the S14 Trophy? Were the Bulls allowed to keep it? They did win it the most and they were the last team to lift it? Can any of the Bulls supporters shed some light on this matter?

      BCC - 2011-06-30 09:59

      Joshua Austin - 2011-06-30 16:23

No BCC, you are the idiot! GHT has a legitmet question!

  • Mojojo - 2011-06-30 15:43

While Kok and watalife cyber fight, i thought I just ad my 23 cents worth. The point is that This Trophy will either "look even better in the Mighty Stormers Trophy Cabinet" or "go back to Christchurch" I am 100% sure that the winner of Saturday's game at 17h05 will be the winner of the Super 15. Personally I hope its the Stormers, but this will be the IT game. This is it! See you all on Saturday. STORMMEEERSSSS!!!

  • Joshua Austin - 2011-06-30 16:15

Why is the top black?? What are they trying to say, that this is a Kiwi trophy??

  • Joshua Austin - 2011-06-30 16:19

Only made of stainless steal?? How boring! Imagine Schalk Burger standing there in Brisbane and is told, "Here is your trophy made of pure stainless steal!!" No man there should be some gold / platinum / silver in there somewhere!!
