Deans: Reds-Stormers final

2011-06-26 11:31

Sydney - The Reds and Stormers, having rested their weary bodies for a week while their rivals slugged it out in the playoffs, will have the confidence of favourites looking forward to next week's Super rugby semi-finals.

The seven-times champion Crusaders rounded out the last four line-up with Saturday's victory over the Sharks and their incredible journey will now take them back to South Africa to face the Stormers next weekend.

The Blues, three-times champions, earned the shorter trip to Brisbane for their semi-final with Friday's win over the Waratahs but will face the top-ranked side in the competition in Ewen McKenzie's Reds.

The Crusaders, denied a single proper home match this season by February's deadly earthquake in Christchurch, have been knocked out at the semi-final stage on South African soil for three of the last four years.

Next Saturday, however, it will not be their nemesis the Bulls who stand in the way to the final but the Cape Town-based Stormers, who have built their success this season on tough tackling and stingy defence.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee watched with interest as the Sharks enjoyed some early success against the Crusaders in Saturday's match in Nelson before going down 36-8.

"If you can execute the double hits and maintain the pressure, you can break the Crusaders' momentum," he told South Africa's Sunday Times. "The Sharks' performance gave us things to look at and it just reminded how important it is to be aggressive in the tackle.

"I think we have the firepower to contest with them. Besides, we are playing at Newlands and there is going to be an amazing atmosphere."

The Crusaders will take confidence from their 20-14 victory at Newlands in round 12 and also look likely to be able to recall totemic All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw to the fray after his recovery from a foot injury.

"It's still not quite 100 percent but it's certainly a lot better than it was last time I played. Having those couple of weeks off was the right thing to do," flanker McCaw told Fairfax media at Nelson airport on Sunday.

"They'll be hurting from what happened that first time, they've had a week off to freshen up, and we've just got to make sure we meet their physicality. That's what we did last time and how we got on top."

The Reds also enjoyed beating their semi-final opponents in the regular season, running out 37-31 winners in a top-of-the-table clash in Brisbane in mid-May.

The Blues then went on to lose their next three matches to plummet down the standings before recovering to reach the playoffs and then beating the injury-ravaged Waratahs 26-13 at Eden Park last Friday.

Although the Reds' backline talent, spearheaded by halfbacks Will Genia and Quade Cooper, remain their likely match-winnners, McKenzie has added a competitive pack and teak-tough defence this year.

Blues coach Pat Lam, who may regret decrying all-Australian Super rugby as "schoolboy stuff" compared to the "war" of New Zealand encounters, is confident his team will be well prepared.

"The Reds are the top team and we came up short last time we were there so it's important we have good preparation for this game," he said. "The excitement of playoff rugby is big and we're looking forward to it."

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans, whose five titles with the Crusaders make him the most successful coach in the competition's history, is, however, expecting a Reds-Stormers final in Brisbane on July 9.

"The Stormers are well placed as the Reds are to win it," Deans said. "Those two sides have the best opportunity to win ... there's no doubt the fact they don't have to travel is significant. No side has ever travelled to Africa and back and won."

Dear Robbie. It would seem as though you haven't been reading the opinions of the TRUE rugby "kenners" on these forums. Now I know you might be the Wallaby coach, ex-Sader coach (and most successful Super rugby coach of all time) - but the chaps on these forums know a helluva lot more than you OK. Lloyd, Hawk, Grinch, Stompies, Marcell etc have more rugga street cred than what you have Robbie (or so they tell us....) So Mr Deans, who are you kidding? The anti-Stormer chaps round here know better than you - hell, they predicted the Bulls would be crowned champs again and look how that turned out? I for one won't doubt them EVER again....maybe you should do the same Mr Deans? Go Bulls - nail the Saders - make SA proud - win the tournie!!!!

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-26 13:16

I, for one, hope Deans is wrong. I hope the Blues nail the Reds so that the final can be played at Newlands. LOL Sorry Bulls....no Soweto this year!

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-26 15:22

The joke of the year - anti-Bulls moaning about the anti-Stormers. Worry about the Cape-based anti-Stormers-pro-Saders, that is the true disgrace in this story. As for Mr Dean's comments - there is alot of truth in what he says, but that doesnt mean the Bulls must choose a team to support. May the best team win, I support none of them!

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-26 15:45

@SAFFA-CAT as a BULLS supporter I will give credit to the Stormers for playing in their 2nd home semi final. They deserve their number 2 spot on the log and their home semi. As stated on another sport24 article about the Blues, where you said you would love the Blues to play down in Cape Town, I said then that I don't think you will be meeting the Blues, you will be playing the Reds in Aus. I am not and never will be a Stormers supporter. May the best team win come Saturday, it is not going to be a walk in the park for either team. Ps Tell me honestly, if it were the Bulls playing, would you have supported them? From your numerous posts on the blog my guess would be NO

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-26 15:53

Having said that, although the Stormers are the clear favourites, being rested, finished higher on the log, home ground advantage and all.. Although you guys really SHOULD clich this one (Saders having to travel etc) I would not put my money on it

      mike - 2011-06-26 16:45

Ag poor old Safa - Think she forgets who old Deans is coaching now and how the Reds winning the Cup would help his ambitions later in the year. Because for an international coach to use the media to advance his own goals is unheared of. lol Saffa you really are dumb sometimes!

      Maarten - 2011-06-26 17:47

SAFFA, why the go at the Bulls supporters? Surely you would be better served concentrating on the upcomming game? Yes, I am a Bulls supporter, and yes, I also believe that it will be a Reds/Crusaders final in Aus. But, unlike you, I will base my statement on what I know of Rugby. Not some mine is bigger than yours argument like you seem to be having With the individuals that you named. The Stormers will loose because: 1. You do not have the scrum to compete in tight phases of the game. (Blauuw and Harris). 2. Schalk Burger IS the most over rated loose forward in the country. He takes away from rather than add to your team. You guys will miss Peter Louw like you have never missed him before, and without Duane there to carry him, your captain becomes your second biggest liability. 3. The Crusaders are simply the most intelegent team in the compiition. 4. The mistaken belief that your back line is invulnerable (J. DeV and J. Fourie, mark my words.... ). I would happily debate my statements. But I am IN NO WAY interested in some my province is bigger/better than yours. I would also gladly be proven wrong. I just cannot see it happening.

      Howzitekse - 2011-06-27 01:36

I would like the Stormers to win the S15, Their performance against the Bulls was not good enough. It is time for Allistair and Rassie to step up, and for the team to deliver.

      CliffB - 2011-06-27 07:10

GraemeBB:Please my friend , read further down , you have been hiding since the bulls hiding last week , you are forever on about the anti bull brigade : Read the following : Rene ( Clever) Muller, Blue Raven,Mike,Maarten,Yourself,Marcell,Krugga,JJRR,gsaker1 , to name a few , no well wishes from one of them, I remember last year after the Bulls beat us in the final , the first 2 well wishers were myself & Saffa , long before a Bull supporter even commented. Please take off your Blue glasees and check the sunshine. !!! You always have a go at Me , Saffa & the rest , but will never see the BB fans sick , sick comments !!!

      Kangaroo - 2011-06-27 08:16

CliifB, the 2 of you ended up being the only well wishers.

      Maarten - 2011-06-27 10:13

@Mr. Bradley. Look, we are ALL South Africans and we ALL want an SA team to win! That much should be self evident. So much so that I never thought it necesary to say that I will be cheering for the Stormers. The fact that I do think that the Stormers can beat the Crusader not withstanding. One can always hope! After all, the Sharks managed to beat my Bulls even after everbody had written them off. My original response to this post is in flat out irretation at the childishness that so pervades this forum. Please read my original post again, I think that you might understand it better.

      GraemeBB - 2011-06-27 11:28

@Cliff - Did I wish your team any ill? Did I call your mother a cow? Have I not always said well done when you won? Am I supporting the Crusaders or Redds? YOU must not come tell me that you arent anti-Bull, and are a great sport. Read this post slowly, and let it sink in to your head: If you choose to take on an individual about their comments, I have never interfered. If you choose to take a shot at Blue Bulls in general, I may have something to say about that. If you put it out there, stand for what you have said. If you feel aggrieved about anti-Stormers comments, and unjustified attacks against the Stormers and their players, welcome to my world. Does it iiratate you? Again, welcome to my world. After every loss, there was no goodwill spread here - and only guys like Crusader Man would say to me sorry for my teams loss - the rest had harsh words - and now you blame me for defending my Bulls. If you made fair statements, and showed me some kind of goodwill, you would have received it back. A natural order of life, dont you think? Good day to you Mr Bradley

      CliffB - 2011-06-27 13:19

GraemeBB: You have been missing in action , forb the last 10 days , so dont go me about no anti stormers - I can go back and Copy & paste your comments before a Stormers game - You are just plain suur-gat that your team got beaten , dont try to make me the bad boy , and don't try to hint the Mr Bradley bit , the only reason I changed my profile is because of some stupid uneducated blue bull supporter who steals profiles.

      Blouste-Blou - 2011-06-27 15:45

CliffB, maybe you must please read Watalife, DangerousDan, Jacques Dean, The Real Frans, JockBok, Sean, Kaballas, Rammsteen, kykhoekyksyvirmy, shannon, WPBefonk, Balsak, Creeky, bullssuck...

      CliffB - 2011-06-27 16:42

Blouste-Blou: Ok Ok , Sorry !!! CHEERS

      CliffB - 2011-06-27 16:49

Blouste-Blou : Kyk bietjie onder hoe praat Marcell van n dame ( SAFFA) wat nie lelik praat nie , oor hoe sy vrot is van PAPSAK & Tik, nie mooi of n regte man nie , net n onbeskofde boef praat so van n dame .....En die simpel vent JJRR wat skree GO GO GO Crusaders , wat n idioot , Anyway ek het bietjie papsak om te drink en tik om te snuif ( Of rook ) CHEERS

      Maarten - 2011-06-27 21:52

@CliffB, agreed. It is not only bad manners, bad education and low self esteem, but also a sign of inbreeding to treat any lady in such a manner. Unfortunately we have just as many of them up here as you have down there.

      CliffB - 2011-06-28 05:59

Maarten: I gave Rene Muller crap once , but was big enough to appologise , the fact that she never acknowledged my appology is not a worry , at least Alwyn did , that is some consolation , Hopefully , you will hear from me on Sat night , Cheers

      Maarten - 2011-06-28 07:12

@CliffB, I will be here, to offer congratulations, or comissiorations as my be. Good luck!

  • WPBEFONK - 2011-06-26 12:03

Indeed, WISE words from a RUGBY GURU. A man who KNOWS what it takes to win the Super Title. Thank you Robbie and I must say I agree with you. It's not going to be EASY but the Stormers by 9. Stormers 25 Crusaders 16 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Boys, Julle is my Lewe, My Hart, My Siel, My lewe en My Alles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Marcell - 2011-06-26 12:46

Kallis is my alles.

Of hulle tuis speel of weg speel. I was a betting person, my money would be on the Crusaders.

Love it, or hate it, FACTS!!!!

      Karoobloed - 2011-06-26 16:42

Jis maar julle is 'n spul stiksiennige ingatte!

      Cuzin - 2011-06-26 21:21

  • AntonKingsize - 2011-06-26 12:24

Saffa cat . . Go bulls? Do you know what you are talking about? The mighty Stormers are playing the Saders and the Bulls are out of this tournament.

      BOFFINBOB - 2011-06-26 12:31

LOL..I seriously think SAFFA-CAT was having a sarchastic go @ those on those " experts " on this site who predicted the Bulls would win it this year.

      René Müller - 2011-06-26 12:37

AntonK, Saffa is being sarcastic! Anyway, my money is on a Crusader/Reds final, for the simple reason that the Stormers unfortunately fold under pressure in big games. If they however can break that 'curse', then yes, I agree Reds/Stormers final. Should that happen, I think the Stormers will have a great chance to win the competition away from home.

      Marcell - 2011-06-26 12:48

      The Grinch - 2011-06-26 13:09

"Daar is baie ondersteuners wat goeie rugby waardeer. " - That backs up the research done by SARU - that people arent supporting Bulls rugby anymore, they want to distance themselves from the retarded rabble that make up a portion of bulls supporters.

      Krugga - 2011-06-26 13:09

Rene, I agree. They also fail to mention that the times the Crusaders were knocked out of the semi's on SA soil was by the Bulls, never the Stompies. I bet 80% of the Stompies' training for the last 2 weeks intailed psychologists giving talks on 'How not to get rattled under pressure' or 'How to find that inner strength when you doubt yourself'. I just hope the WP management have their player contracts and bonuses sorted before this weekends game, we dont want a repeat of 1999 when the Stompies lost in the semis at Newlands to a mediocre Otago due to greedy individualistic players.

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-26 13:20

Nope Krugga....it's the Bull's lamenting the fact that they are not getting bonuses this year for not being good enough!

      Marcell - 2011-06-26 13:22

Gooinat, Sport 24: Jy is 'n grapgat. Klim terug in jou hok.

      Krugga - 2011-06-26 13:31

Yes Mike, I'm sure they do considering all the bonuses they received over the last decade. I think the closest the Stompies got to bonuses the last 11 years was their Xmas parties at Nandos.

      Marcell - 2011-06-26 13:31

Glo vir my, they all live in the lap of luxury and drive cars well over R1 mio. Dis 'n tawwe kompetisie, good luck to all of them. My emosionele support is ongelukkig by die Crusaders vir die eenvoudige rede dat hulle soveel hartseer die seisoen al moes deurmaak, en kyk waar is hulle! My lojale support is by die Stormers omdat hulle SA is, en dan sommer net die Reds, omdat hulle nog die hele seisoen heel bo aan die algehele 'log' was. M.a.w. wie ookal wen, verdien dit in my oe. Enjoy!!!

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-06-26 14:35

@ Rene, Krugga and Marcel....well then, I am pleased forthe Bulls. LOL.

      Howzitekse - 2011-06-26 16:19

The Bulls got smashed by everybody and are out. Why are we talking about them?

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-26 19:47

@howziteske the Bulls definitely did not get "smashed" by everybody. They had a slow start to the competition and in the end the mountain was just too high to climb this time around. The Stormers deserve their home semi spot, but a home semi does not secure the trophy, you still have a way to go. The Stormers must still get past the Crusaders which if you think it is going to be an easy match, sir you have to think again. If you get past the Crusaders you still have to travel to Aus to face the Reds (I don't think the Reds will be beaten at home by a good but inconsistent Blues), both teams"crushed" (using your words) the Stormers earlier this year. If the Stormers pull this of they would have earned my respect for sure, not my support, but my respect. May the best team win.

  • gsaker1 - 2011-06-26 14:09

Give me a break of course he's going to say that - As the Australian coach and a kiwi and x Crusaders coach he has to be careful not to show his bias and be an honorary Ozzie...so naturally he's going to say the Red's will win and the Stormers will beat his old team...completely eliminates any sway towards the Kiwi sides as the Australian coach...Don't be a sucker an buy into this obvious public relations exercise...the Crusaders have already played the Stormers at home and won so what's he really basing his argument on ? The Red's will be at least half the Wallabies side so would be a bit of a worry if the Australian coach said they won't win the semi-final...Give me a break he knows both these games could either but is playing his cards right..........

  • Mikus - 2011-06-26 16:02

I so would like to agree with Mr. Deans unfortunately there is a small detail he has failed to clarify - there are in fact 3 rested teams competing the semis this weekend - the only workout the Crusaders got against the sharks was jogging on and off the field. Thanks for nothing Durban.

  • slg - 2011-06-26 16:24

He doesn't have a good track record with predictions. This is not good for the Stormers.

  • JJRR - 2011-06-26 16:49

Saders is Weeeeeeeer champs... net soos Bulle champs is!!!!!! hahahahahahahaha

      CliffB - 2011-06-28 06:00

JJRR - Sorry , I missed something - Ex Champs yep , Gerrie Coetzee was also an ex champ !!!

  • Karoobloed - 2011-06-26 16:52

Remember Fitzy telling the Boks they were the favorites prior to last year's Tr-Nations.... That is how you do it folks... Contrast that to Jake White a few years ago telling the Irish pre-match that not one of their players was good enough to play for the Boks... Psychology 101 seems to be lost on many of us... Deans are likely paving the way for Crusaders and Blues victories. Not that they need any help. Best of luck to the Stormers.

  • Kangaroo - 2011-06-26 17:15

So Mr.Deans you think since you don't coach them anymore, they can't win the cup? It smacks of arrogance.

  • gsaker1 - 2011-06-26 17:21

Hey Mikus like yr sense of humour mate - had a good laugh when I read that - nice one dude!!

  • gsaker1 - 2011-06-26 17:41

You heard it here people - the Red's will be found out in semi-final ....being in the weakest competition is going to come back to haunt them come semi-final time and I don't think the week off is going to help them - the Blues are starting to show some great form, Rene Ranger is back for this game and Jerome Kaino and Alli Williams are both in simply sublime form and if the Rd's have an Achilles heel its their scrum and the Blues scrum is full of All Blacks and the next best in NZ after the Crusaders so I'm not convinced they are the goods and if they do win and meet the Crusaders or Stormers in the final they won't win it...both the Crusaders and the Stormers are better sides than the Red's except for the Stormers cracking under pressure and SA sides poor away records in general but even so I think the Stormers might take the Red's. However, if they meet the experienced Crusaders in a final playing for the people of Christchurch - honestly the Red's can forget it - seriously - in fact the score could get ugly for the Red's - the Crusaders will be so fired up they'll need extra paramedics for the injuries the Red's will get - and I'm not trying to funny either folks...look outbig time if the Crusaders make the final and no offense to the Stormers at all but I think it's fair to say the Reds will be wanting the Stormers to take the Crusaders out this weekend don't worry about. Facing a team who's been there and won it 7 times is not the side you want to face in the final!

      Hannes van der Linde - 2011-06-27 10:43

I think you're right, have a sneaky suspicion the Reds are gonna come up short. It might be because I'd rather see a Blues / Stormers final than having to travel to AUS to play the Reds.

  • hawk - 2011-06-26 18:13

To Mr Deans and the rest of the Strompie fools. Its all about tradition and culture. Province dont know how to win purely because they havent for the last 10 years. The Saders have a proud tradition. They have pride and respect that tradition. They know how to win, just like the Bulls. Province will fail miserably and as usual will choke. They are dumb but they try. Sing it all together now Strompies. We are dumb but we try

      Howzitekse - 2011-06-26 19:21

Tradition does not win games. Ask the Bulls, they ended 7th out of 15 and got thumped by everybody.

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-26 19:55

@howzitekse so you agree the Bulls have a winning tradition? Thank you mate! Now that wasn't that hard was it? Now let's hope your team can follow suit :)

      Cuzin - 2011-06-26 22:13

@Hawk. You can't get it right either. Some say the Stormer/WP haven't won a title in 11 years, some say 10 years. In fact at this moment in time it's 9 years. I know it's still a long time, but if you want to criticize, then at least get your facts right. Let me help you all. WP won the Currie Cup for the last time in 2001. So they haven't won a title since then till 2010. So 2010 - 2001 = 9 years. Easy math I would say.

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-26 23:57

@Hawk the Stormers deserve their shot at the title, give credit where credit is due. Best of luck to the Stormers. May the best team win

      tiger - 2011-06-27 07:49

There is no more Blue Bulls- they are now called Blue lambs.

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-27 09:14

@tiger Whatever!! You are right however the Stormers are there and the Bulls not. That said, all the odds are in the Stormers favour, all they need to do is win. Gosh how can they not?! Go Stormers! A win is the ONLY acceptable result come Saturday.. Please NO excuses.

      Shistirrer - 2011-06-27 10:38

@Cuzin - spot on dude, its easy math, easy peasy. The problem is that it was Blulls supporters who were doing it, and got 2010-2001=11 years. Heard about the guy in Pretoria who printed counterfeit money? Problem is, it came out all R8 notes. He thought, no problem, I can get it changed at Loftus. So the next Saturday at Loftus he asked the guy at the naartjie stand to change a note for him. The naartjie guy said "Sure! How do you want it, a six and a two, or two fours?"

      RJ - 2011-06-26 20:25

For the sake of this competition it will be great to have a stormers Reds final none have won it before...

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-26 22:28

Jy't 'n Stormer bevriend.

Silly remarks won't make anybody feel better or change anything. The semi's are here and we only have one RSA team there - whether you like it or not in 2011 theyt are the only team with a chance to win the trofee. It is really becomming a bit irritating to read constant comments - "you have not won anything in 10 years"/"0/30 possible attempts" / "most successfull SA team ever" etc etc etc. It seems as if that is trhe only statistic rememberred or known to certain people. Weel done to the Bulls for their efforts and successes the past decade !!! As of today it's the Stormers turn to see if they can break the drought in the South (yes we do not deny a trofee drought at all !!!) and win the S15 trofee and title. Give them a fair chance and support them - they are unfortunately there and do have a good chance !!! GO STORMERS !!!!

      tiger - 2011-06-27 07:52

      I agree - GO STORMERS.

      SA-FAN - 2011-06-27 13:57

Great comment Northern stormer, i dont see any of the other supporters complaining here except the bulls. Just shows you the bulls people wont even support an SA team because they are selfish and arrogant!

      Blouste-Blou - 2011-06-27 16:06

Well, I can assure you one thing... if the Stormers and Blues win their respective matches this weekend. We will have our first super trophy! Regardless of BMT or form, the fact is that apart from the ref that hammered the Sharks in the first half, the travelling made in roads in the second. They seemed completely out of steam. The saders are travelling here this time, they will be out on their feet in the second. You can't get away from the science that has an influence on the players' bodies no matter how you try and dodge it.

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-27 08:56

I agree Hannes. There is absolutely NO reason why the Stormers can not beat the Crusaders in the semi. Being rested and all. The odds are stacked in their favour! So Stormers NO excuses please! Only a win is good enough. Good luck! Actually you don't need luck, the game is there for the taking :-)

      Hannes van der Linde - 2011-06-27 10:44

spot on, no excuses. Only a win will suffice!

  • georgemtem - 2011-06-27 09:10

      kiwi - 2011-06-27 09:36

they just don't seem to get the big picture

  • gsaker1 - 2011-06-27 11:04

Hannes van der Linde - have u been watching the same competition this yr - I think not - I remember all the same travel crap coming from Stormers supporters when the Stormers - at home - played the Crusaders not all that long ago in the comp... and ummm... gee Handes mate, why don't you remind us all of the score and how tired the Crusaders were that day with all the travel? I seem to remember yr own commentators saying how tired the Stormers looked with 15 minutes to go and all they did was get a friggen bus a kilometer down the road...must have been a rough ride huh Handes? If yr relying on a Crusaders side being tired from travel to beat them them that tells me how desperate u are to find ways to argue the Stormers will win since they have already beaten you at home this year huh?

      BlueRaven - 2011-06-27 11:49

@gsaker1 come now, the Stormers will win, how can they not? ALL the odds are against the Crusaders and against such a great team as the Stormers they don't stand a chance! ;-) Now Schalkie ALL of SA's hopes and eyes are on your magical Stormers team... Please NO excuses? Surely if the Bulls could do it you can?
