Ref tweet costs Reds wing

Cape Town - Reds wing Digby Ioane was slapped with an A$2 000 fine on Wednesday for describing referee Keith Brown as the "worst ever ref" on his Twitter page last weekend.

A SANZAR Judicial Hearing found Ioane's tweet, which he later deleted, merited a fine and also ordered him to write a letter of apology to the New Zealand official.

Brown awarded a controversial late penalty last Saturday which allowed the Wellington Hurricanes to beat the Reds 28-26 and end the Australian team's run of seven successive wins.

The Super rugby organisers deemed that Ioane's Twitter rant had broken their Code of Conduct in making their ruling.

Another Wallabies back, Matt Giteau, was fined A$5 000 for criticising referee Steve Walsh after the Brumbies lost to the Waratahs last year.
