Reds upset at Kings Park ref

Cape Town - The Reds are upset with the officiating of South African referee Lourens van der Merwe following their 35-20 loss to the Sharks at Kings Park over the weekend.

"He didn't handle the breakdowns well. You have to be on your feet in order to play the ball at the breakdowns," Reds coach Richard Graham told the Beeld website.

Reds captain James Horwill shared his coach's sentiments.

"I talked to him the whole time to find out why he made certain calls," said Horwill.

The Reds were also unhappy with the yellow card Beau Robinson received. The substitute loose forward was carded for infringing at the breakdown in the 67th minute, which Graham said was a crucial point in the game.

"It played a big role - we were only 20-28 down at that stage. Things didn't go our way, but that's part of life. We'll have to take it on the chin and move on," the coach continued.

The Reds next face the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday (17:05 kick-off).

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
