Crafty Reds stun Stormers

Cape Town - An undisciplined Stormers team surrendered their perfect record and first place on the Vodacom Super Rugby table this season after a 19-6 defeat by Reds at Newlands on Saturday.

The Stormers had two forwards sin-binned and the yellow carding of hooker Deon Fourie with 13 minutes left proved costly.

Fourie was sent to the touchline for tripping an Australian opponent and Reds flyhalf Quade Cooper goaled the resultant penalty to give the visitors a 12-6 advantage.

It got worse for Stormers six minutes later when centre Mike Harris barged over beside a post for the only try after being set up by scrumhalf Will Genia following a five-yard scrum.

The Reds added 10 points while Fourie was inactive and late Stormers pressure in search of a converted try and a bonus point petered out when they lost the ball forward.

Defeat for the Stormers in a forward-dominated match completed a miserable South African weekend in the competition with Cheetahs and defending champions Bulls losing in New Zealand.

The Stormers won their first six matches of the season largely due to the deadly goal kicking of flyhalf Peter Grant, but he had few opportunities as the Reds starved the home team of the ball.

Newlands witnessed the rare sight of the South African pivot missing a shot at goal when his second-minute attempt drifted to the left although he did succeed with two later efforts.

Cooper contributed 14 points from four penalties out of five attempts plus a conversion as the Reds completed a South African 'double' having overcome the Lions by five points in Johannesburg last weekend.

"Winning two out of two was a huge ask. We realised defensive strength and a strong physical approach were vital against the Stormers," said Reds captain and lock James Horwill.

Stormers skipper and Springbok flank Schalk Burger said: "Discipline let us down as you cannot afford to play 20 minutes of a match against the Reds a man short."

Cooper landed three penalties within nine minutes midway through the first half before Grant reduced arrears with his second shot at goal three minutes before half-time.

Grant cut the gap to three points with another penalty 18 minutes into the second half, but the Fourie incident spoilt any chance Stormers had of a grandstand finish.

The Reds picked up four points for their victory and moved back to the top the Australian Conference and into second position in the overall standings.

The Stormers left empty-handed, but maintained their top spot in the South African standings. They slipped to third in the overall log.

In next weekend's Round 9 action, the Stormers travel to Johannesburg to face the Lions, while the Reds return home to Brisbane to face the Bulls.
