Brisbane - The defending champion Reds have drafted in Sam Lane, son of former Australia centre Tim Lane, to fill the void at No 10 created by injuries to five flyhalves.

Sam Lane, 21, signed a short-term contract and was due to join the Reds on Monday.

The Reds are coming off a heavy 61-8 loss to the Bulls in Pretoria, a defeat compounded by a broken leg to Jono Lance. Lance is expected to be out for three months, joining playmakers Quade Cooper, Mike Harris, Ben Lucas and UJ Seuteni on the sidelines.

Sam Lane finished high school at Bishops in Cape Town and was eligible for the South Africa Under-20 team trials until he injured his knee last year.

He left Western Province to join the Australian Academy in Sydney this season.
