Pretorius's future in doubt

2012-07-05 20:49

Sydney - Waratahs scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius could be looking for a new home if reports from Australia are to be believed.

According to the SuperSport website, Pretorius was unceremoniously left out of the Waratahs match 22 this week for the game against the Brumbies this week and his position has become “under threat” at the struggling province, who may turn their eyes to try and bring in a big name overseas player to fill the stands.

Pretorius made headlines last year when he chose to join the Australian side after a sensational season with the Cheetahs, but after initially showing some decent form, has struggled behind a Waratahs pack which has not had much success on the field.

As the Tahs struggled for results, so did Pretorius’ form and it wasn’t long before he was on the bench behind Brendan McKibbin.

But this week, with the Tahs still searching for answers after a disasterous season, he was left out of the 22 for former All Black coach John Hart’s nephew Grayson Hart and with just one game left after this weekend is unlikely to start again.

Pretorius’ future is unclear at the moment, although he will return to South Africa at the end of next week to continue his Currie Cup contract with the Cheetahs.

But that contract is for two years, and only for the Currie Cup, while Pretorius does have another year to run at the Waratahs.

There is no clarity at the moment, and Pretorius may stay on in Sydney for next year’s competition, but the way things happen in Australia is that if they want to get rid of you, they can make you feel very unwelcome indeed.

Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske confirmed to SuperSport.com that there was no plans to bring Pretorius back to Bloemfontein for another Super Rugby stint.

Drotske of course has young Piet van Zyl to back, and after the performances he put in this year, as well as catching the eye of Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, the young halfback may be a Bok sooner rather than later and it makes sense to back him.

For the Currie Cup, both Pretorius and Van Zyl will battle it out, with veteran Tewis de Bruyn extending his contract for another three months to complete the domestic season.

But from then on the Cheetahs haven’t got an option for the second scrumhalf, although Drotske’s words indicate that Pretorius is unlikely to feature anywhere in his plans if he does decide to return.

If Pretorius does end his contract, it will be a sad end for a talented player who has failed to find favour in South Africa.

For now it seems the ball is in the court of the Waratahs. With a promised season review likely to be scathing of coaching and tactics, there may be other casualties.

Pretorius may well be caught in the crossfire, or may escape it altogether. Either way, this week in the stands he will be a concerned man, and despite a contract, may feel his future is very uncertain.

he will get a contract, a player like him will not be left in the cold. europe, japan, SA someone will offer him something lucrative

      sean.bagley.50 - 2012-07-05 22:28

Wasn't he the top Super Rugby try scorer last year? EP Southern Kings would probably want to snap him up,because his got a bit talent this boy. It's real shame such a talented player got so mismanaged over there. He has huge potential, and any franchise willing to invest in him would benefit in the long run rest assured. Sarel Pretorius style of play does benefit from having a dominant pack and vacant positions for scrumhalves behind dominant packs are very few and far between.Province should look at bringing him in from the cold.

      Benny - 2012-07-05 22:33

Ek dink hy kan dalk die Stormers help driee druk. Duvenhage is net n link tussen voor en agterspelers.

      Tom - 2012-07-05 23:35

It's not important to push threes, although it's kind of the whole point of the game

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-06 00:27

You are right Tom, The most tries wins. Here most of us thought whoever had the most points wins. Man how can people be so dumb. Poor guy.

      Benny - 2012-07-06 08:19

Ok julle stupid patete.

      Tom - 2012-07-07 08:31

The game was invented with the goal to score tries. Who is talking about the way the stormers play? I'm talking about the central concept of the game, but u defensive lean bacon start with defending the stormers lack of tries

  • harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-05 20:56

Sarel, I don't know what your plans are for the immediate future, but maybe you can join the Stormers in about 5 years. They are big on buying hasbeens.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-05 21:05

5 years??? They can take him now if they want...

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-05 21:07

He's not over the hill yet.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-05 21:10

No Super cups........EVER. Can I say that again? EVER.

      harold.lloyd.520 - 2012-07-05 21:20

No cups. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was nice to talk some rugby. Now it's time for my nap. Good night.

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-05 21:35

Harold secretly loves the Stormers. That is why he brings them up in every single post he makes. Either that or he is just very jealous that we beat them Twice in one year. They are quick the bring up the past, how about 2000 and 2001 and before when the bulls were the laughing stock of Super Rugby. They were even worse than the lions. If the past means so much, you can't just pick and choose what you want to talk about. Truth be told, I guess you gotta hold on to the one thing that makes a troll feel good about themselves. At the end it means nothing, and unlike you trolls, some of us actually like to watch rugby, not just call people names, and live in the past. But then again, can't expect any actual rugby talk from trolls.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-05 21:56

Lean my friend who do you call a Troll? Have you look in the mirror recently??

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-05 21:59

daspoort "whooped the bulls asses" ?? is that your definition of whooped ? A BS penalty and a try against the flow a week before the Eng test ? .. Winning a game or two is not an achievement Daspoort .. the Rebels do not have barging rights over the Crusaders .. . There is no titles for scraping by the bulls twice in a season .

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-05 22:09

"They are quick the bring up the past, how about 2000 and 2001 and before when the bulls were the laughing stock of Super Rugby. " yeah and then they went on to become one of the most successful teams in SR history and the most successful in the past 5 years .. by all means mention it, it doesn't change anything but make their turnaround story even more amazing. "At the end it means nothing, and unlike you trolls, some of us actually like to watch rugby, not just call people names, and live in the past. But then again, can't expect any actual rugby talk from trolls." spoken like a supporter of a team that's not achieved anything. We've won it not once but 3 times that's an ACCOMPLISHMENT and means something and gives the team bragging rights. Two unconvincing wins is NOT an ACCOMPLISHMENT and you have 0 bragging rights until you actually accomplish something by winning the competition .

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-05 22:15

      Leon ook maar lekker ne...

      leon.devilliers.9 - 2012-07-05 22:26

      @chapstickcharles..........lekker? soos jou ma?

      Benny - 2012-07-05 22:29

Graeme dit lyk of daai vet morg n paar van sy besoekers geeet het.

      chaplinncharlie - 2012-07-05 22:38

      *is my ma baie.....

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-05 23:07

"Bulls winning % against Stormers in ALL Super Rugby = 42% or 8 out of 19 games. (2 out of the last 6 encounters) " .. I'm sorry Daspoort and what did that accomplish .. did that win you some title of silverware ? 3 vs 0 'Okay, you brag about the 3 wins which were achieved in 2007, 2009 and 2010. How about before 2007?? 11 years from 1996-2006 the Bulls won ZERO. How many times did the Bulls finish LAST? 3 times. 2nd last? 2 times. "... it's not 3 wins it's three SR TITLES .. the type where the whole team gets together smiles and they take pictures .. is this really your argument.. really ? They were kuk before they became great and won the title 3 times ( the only SA team ever to have won ) ?? "So you say 2 "unconvincing wins" mean nothing, how about the stats I gave you. Is that convincing enough for you?" What DOES it mean daspoort ? You're tops up to this point in the SR competition on some ranking system .. let's ignore the fact that you're behind the Chiefs on the real log and the fact that you didn't play the other two top teams the Chiefs and Brumbies . WHAT DOES IT MEAN ??. did you get a SR title ? Did they take some pictures ? It MEANS you're currently ahead on their ranking system and that's all it means . Do you think that a goal the teams set when they start the season ? NO , they aim to win the title.. That's the accomplishment they're after. To win the competition they're in

      Tom - 2012-07-05 23:44

Must say random dude is quite far ahead in this argument. I've never seen something this one sided since the bulls had to beat the reads by 70 points and then smashed them by more. And then there was the time the chiefs got dominated in that one final.... 3 super titles. Argument over every time. It is cute how the stormers rate their whole season not on trophies but win % against the bulls

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-05 23:46

Poor school kids. Have to go to name calling, and talking crap about people. They have no real rugby knowledge in those small brains. So they have to start with the kid stuff. Feel sorry for you no name brand people, must suck to grow up like that, and live on the internet, with no real life friends or family. Eish, what a nasty world to live in. Maybe you get some satisfaction out of doing all this, good for you. Your real life is so boring and lonely I guess that as all you get. Truly feel sorry for you.

      john.edwards.733450 - 2012-07-06 06:38

Yes it does mean something in 2012 it means our team accomplished something in the competition we can brag about ..your two seat of the pants wins do not qualify as an accomplishment to brag about ( Rebels v Crusaders ?? ) . Just like your 100% win record over us leading up to the 2010 final didn't qualify as brag worthy. You're perhaps talking about what does it mean for our prospects in 2012 ?. The answer to that is nothing but I didn't claim it did .

      henk.jacobs.39 - 2012-07-06 18:23

Daspoort, did it ever occur to you that while you downed us twice this year and won 3 more games than us you are only 4 points ahead? Makes you wonder....

  • chris.venter.39 - 2012-07-05 21:02

    Kings maybe?

  • jacquesalthea.knotter - 2012-07-05 21:44

Nah, won't happen, you are an uneducated bulls supporter after all still living with his mommy, and with no name. Probably working in Pick n Pay to keep up with the no name brand. That the best you got random? Poor guy, keep living in the past and for a rugby team that you never played in. You realize the rest of the world gives a damn about how many trophies your team has won. More than half the world has no knowledge on the matter anyways. There is more too life than the past or rugby. You should try it sometime. Then again, you guys should never have a family, the world would be much better off that way.

      lean.sadie - 2012-07-05 23:52

THe big whale vagina is back. Hi tom, how is the weather inside there?

he decided to piss off to Australia because after ONE good season he thought he deserved to be a Bok...he made his bed and so he must lay in it!!!!!

      les.gombart - 2012-07-06 11:22

      ludwe.mdingi - 2012-07-06 13:33

and look where that got him....he isnt an accountant,he is a rugby player!!!a Bok contract as worth much more then what the Tahs are paying him!!!!a liittle vasbyt and another season like that with the Cheetahs and he wouldv been in Meyers plans.not playing club rugby in NSW.

  • Francois - 2012-07-06 08:54

  • les.gombart - 2012-07-06 11:15

Don't understand all the angst in these blogs... What has Bulls vs Stormers / WP got to do with the fact that Sarel possibly made a bad decision? He is still a good scrummy and should be snapped up by a good franchise... Personally, I would not mind him joining the Stormers camp!
