Polota-Nau back for Waratahs

Sydney - Powerhouse Wallabies hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau is set to return from his latest bout of concussion to boost the NSW Waratahs in Saturday's Super Rugby clash against the Lions in Sydney.

Polota-Nau missed the Waratahs' last-start 20-15 victory over the Western Force after taking another heavy head knock but coach Chris Hickey said on Monday he would be fit to play against the South African team at the SFS.

With his back up Damien Fitzpatrick also set to return from injury, there's unlikely to be a spot for John Ulugia who filled in strongly at hooker against the Force.

"Tatafu Polota-Nau, he'll be back into that hooking position as well as Damien Fitzpatrick, who'll come onto the bench as a reserve hooker," Hickey told reporters.

"Getting both those players back is a real plus for us going into this game.

"We'll have some stability in our selection where outside that we'll have the same side, I think."

One unknown at the moment for Hickey is Sitaleki Timani, who might be available to take on the Lions despite suffering a hand injury in the win over the Force.

It was initially feared Timani had suffered a season-ending fracture but scans showed the damage was not as bad as first feared and he's responded well with the Waratahs having a bye last weekend.

Timani will have his fitness assessed and Hickey said he should know if the second-rower is available by Wednesday.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
