Preview: Super Rugby Week 4

Cape Town - The DHL Stormers boast the unusual distinction of providing the tallest, shortest and lightest players in Vodacom Super Rugby in 2011 – as well as one of the heaviest (according to the declared statistics in the media guide).

The Cape franchise is home to the tallest player in southern hemisphere professional rugby in lock Andries Bekker (2.08m); they have the smallest player in the competition in scrumhalf Ricky Januarie (1.68m) and also have the lightest athlete in Gio Aplon (76kg) from the 450 potential competitors in this season’s tournament.

Stormers prop CJ van der Linde and lock Bekker are also listed as the fifth heaviest of all players in this year’s competition at 122kg. The Rebels prop Rodney Blake (130kg) is the heaviest athlete competing in southern hemisphere professional rugby.

On Friday evening, some of the competition’s heaviest and tallest players will be in action at Newlands when the Cape team host the Highlanders. Bekker and Van der Linde are expected to collide with the second heaviest athlete in the competition – prop Jamie Mackintosh (129kg) and the third tallest player in Joe Tuineau (2.03m).

Aplon – the lightest player in the competition makes his first appearance in the competition, while Dewaldt Duvenage - second lightest at 78kg will partner flyhalf Peter Grant as the Stormers halfback combination on Friday.
